Ginny was in a life-threatening bike accident. She will be unable to work for awhile as her recovery will be long. She is a super hard working mom with two children. Please contribute whatever you can to help Ginny and her family. With thanks and gratitude.

The Rocky Neck Art Colony is presenting an exciting exhibition featuring the work of artists who explore the possibilities of the print. NORTH SHORE PRINTS is coming to the Cultural Center at Rocky Neck for four weeks from August 27- September 20, and documents a relatively unsung medium and the Cape Ann artists who create them. Despite the fact that artists as diverse as Rembrandt and Rauschenberg considered printmaking an integral aspect of their overall oeuvre, the genre is often cast as a lesser art form. NORTH SHORE PRINTS celebrates the artists and a wide variety of printmaking techniques they employ.
The public is invited to an opening reception for the artists on Friday, September 4, 5:00-7:00 PM. Light refreshments will be served in the recently air-conditioned space.

It’s Guitarzan week this Thursday as two of the finest guitarists on my list come together for a great night of wailing and gnashing of teeth. Firstly, there’s the commodious Steve Sadler who really belts it out.
Then there’s Jimmy Scoppa who really belts it out. They fuse with great zzzing and dripping. Top it off with the twitching of Mr. Jeff Casper, the friendly drummer and myself on the low end and We’re really gonna stir it up!

Mikaela here and I was wondering if you have heard about this fun weekend on September 5th and 6th called Pooch-A-Palooza? The folks here are talking about it and it sure sounds like a “dog-gone good time” with proceeds to help support the care of dogs like me! Cape Ann Animal Aid has teamed up with Pooch-A-Palooza to put together a fun filled weekend for people and their dogs at the Topsfield Fair Grounds. I will be busy here at the shelter, meeting my new family, but I’m super excited that this event will help more pups like me find homes!
I’m about a 8 months old, so I still have puppy energy and I have to learning basic doggie skills and tricks but don’t worry I promise I’ll catch on quick! I’m a little shy but, warm up fast. I’ve been told I have some spaniel and retriever in my family mix but no one is exactly sure. What does that really matter anyways? I’ll find someone who loves me no matter what kind of mix I am! Think you have the time to be my prince or princess charming? YES?!?! Then come visit me today! I can’t wait to meet you!
Visit www.capeannanimalaid.org for more information about Mikaela and all the other animals waiting for homes and for information about upcoming events like Pooch-A-Palooza this weekend.

Almost seems silly to do a “Picks Post” this week, but I will…simply to hammer home the fact that it is time for the Tails & Sails Block Party AND, ummmm, that little event we like to call Schooner Festival!!
So, there’s the awesomeness of this year’s final Block Party, gorgeous schooners decorating the harbor in almost every direction you look, fantastic events at Maritime Gloucester, a lobster bake, a concert on the boulevard, a Boat Parade of Lights, and, you know, some fireworks…plus more!
Here is just a bit of what you can look forward to at Maritime Gloucester ….
As part of Gloucester Schooner Festival line-up, Maritime Gloucester will host its annual Heritage Day celebration from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. The event is free to the public. Over 25 artisans, food vendors and community organizations will be set up on Schooner Way and down Webster Pier with demonstrations and family activities.
Daisy Nell will take the Boat House Stage at 11:00 and 1:00 pm reading her new childrens book, Tilly & the Pirates & performing songs from the accompanying CD. Country blues & folk artists, Chick & Ellen will be performing three sets on the Dory Shop deck. Schooners will be available for dockside tours. Lunch & refreshments available onsite. To celebrate Schooner Festival, Maritime Gloucester’s exhibits and aquarium will be open throughout the day for half-price admission!
Great, fun event for families and visitors to Gloucester for Schooner Festival weekend. Check back for a complete schedule!

Gloucester’s recently restored 1926 Schooner Adventure was hired by a group of Maine farmers, the Greenhorns, and an outfit called Maine Sail Freight, to carry goods from Portland to Boston for sale in the Boston Public Market, the first such delivery under sail since before WWII. Their idea was to show that there are alternative ways to reduce one’s carbon footprint. I shipped aboard as a volunteer deckhand. It was a privilege to be part of such a fine crew (most of whom are half my age or less).
We left Gloucester at 2300 on Wednesday after our regular member sail and arrived in Portland to load the next morning. There were plenty of volunteers to help get the goods on the ship. We left Portland at 0600 on Friday morning, sailed south all day and through the night tacking against the prevailing southwesterlies. I stood lookout and did my turns at the helm from 0400 to 0800 so I saw moonset and sunrise with my two watch mates while everyone else was asleep. It was an amazing experience to be sailing such a powerful ship twenty miles off the coast in darkness and almost total silence. Whales, porpoises, gannets, and shearwaters came by to check us out. There was some time to catch up on sleep and eat the great food coming from the galley before going back on watch from 1600 to 2000, and sailing into Boston Harbor. We unloaded early Sunday morning so the goods could be sold at the Boston Public Market and entertained visitors on deck during an Open Ship before sailing back to Gloucester and anchoring in the outer harbor allowing Columbia, in town for the Schooner Festival, to stay at our usual spot on Maritime Gloucester’s Webster Pier until the next morning. As the official schooner of the City of Gloucester, part of Adventure’s mission is to represent the city in places beyond Cape Ann, I think we did so ably. Our upcoming trips to Provincetown and New Bedford will continue that ambassadorial role.
