New Calendar Added to GMG: Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce

I’d like to thank Michelle Budrow,  Marketing & Communications Manager at the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce, for taking the time to set up a google calendar on her gmail account and sharing it with my gmail account: jameseves3@gmail.com

This is the most efficient way for organizations that host many events to list their events on the Cape Ann Calendar on GMG. By creating their own calendar, they have direct access to add and/or edit events and then they appear immediately on the Cape Ann Calendar on GMG.

“John talked very kind of Liverpool docker talk…George was a bit more of a perfectionist. John seemed a little more relaxed”

LISTEN HERE:

Cha-Chi Loprete was gracious enough to give us permission to post his extraordinary interview with British Rock Star, Joey Molland that aired yesterday morning on his famous WZLX radio show, Breakfast With The Beatles.

Joey tells some fascinating stories about his life, what it was like working with John Lennon on “Imagine” and George Harrison on “All Things Must Pass” along with other momentous musical experiences, including being part of the Concert for Bangladesh.  And the whole thing starts off with a brand-new version of Badfinger’s hit “Come And Get It” by The Hollywood Vampires (Alice Cooper, Johnny Depp, Joe Perry and guests including Paul McCartney, Robby Krieger, Dave Grohl and others).

You can see Joey Molland and Badfinger this Saturday, right down the road at Beverly’s intimate, acoustically spectacular Larcom Theatre with Salem’s rising stars Brooks Young Band opening.  Good seats are still available.  Get tickets here.

Speaking of the Concert for Bangladesh, here’s a short recap of how some of the world’s biggest rock stars came together in 1971 for THE concert that set the standard for all future fund-raising efforts.

An Acoustic Evening with Ken Yates & Fozzie Hill ~ October 16, 2015

Friday, October 16 at 7:00pm Manchester Community Center 40 Beach St, Manchester, Massachusetts 01944 Tickets Available www.brownpapertickets.com
Single Tree Music Presents:

Toronto singer-songwriter, Ken Yates, and Gloucester singer-songwriter, Fozzie Hill, share a very special double bill of songs and stories at the Manchester Community Center in picturesque Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts.

Guests are welcome to bring their own snacks and beverages to this performance.

About Ken Yates:

Born and Raised in London, Ontario, Ken Yates moved to Boston to study songwriting at Berklee College of Music. It was there that he developed his skills as a songwriter, releasing his first album, “The Backseat EP”, and received the opportunity to play a song for one of his biggest influences, John Mayer. Mayer then posted a full page blog about Yates’ ability as a writer stating, “Ken Yates wrote a song called ‘I Don’t Wanna Fall In Love’ this song moved me when I first heard it and still does today”. Yates’ EP received high critical acclaim, leading to a slew of online covers from fans. He has toured with many notable names including veteran singer/songwriter and mentor, Livingston Taylor, Sister Hazel, Peter Katz, and Liz Longley and has songs in heavy rotation on Sirius XM’s The Coffee House where he was nominated for The Coffee House Songwriter Discovery of the Year. He was recently chosen as The 2014 Colleen Peterson Award winner by the Ontario Arts Council for his song “The One That Got Away”.

“Want to hear a great song? (I mean a REALLY great song?)” John Mayer, one forty plus taking about Yate’s “I Don’t Want to Fall in Love”

“Ken Yates’ music is solid as stone and clear as mountain air he proves the future is in very good shape” Livingston Taylor

About Fozzie Hill:

Fozzie Hill is about as authentic as one can be. Born and forever rooted in Gloucester, her ambition from the age of seven, when she first remembers being drawn into the deep mystery of the human voice, has been to ” release that power inside” of herself.

When friends and neighbors insisted that she share her gift, and after a dear friend challenged her to learn three songs on guitar, and when she did, gifted her with that guitar- (her first,) she began performing as a young woman in the 1970 and 80s in Boston at the Cantab Lounge, Johnny D’s, the Tam.

Now, decades later, with a CD (“AKA Fozzie, Alberta Hill,” 2003) produced by Geoffrey Richon and Rose Osborne and many of those Gloucester friends who “cared enough to get under my skin,” Fozzie is again performing her intuitive, soulful music, as a popular regular at Gloucester’s Rhumbline with her bass player Wolf Ginandes.

She turns a barroom into a listening room with her own covers and original songs influenced by a diverse array of musicians such as Lucinda Williams, Bob Dylan, Donovan, John Sebastian, Ferron, and the Rolling Stones.

Boston-area bluesman Larry Carsman recently said of Fozzie Hill, ” Count me in as new member of Fozzie’s fan club. She was so magical, I felt transformed.”

Oarmaster’s Cup & dory removal From the International Dory Racing Committee

It’s time to compete for the Oarmaster’s Cup.

This Sunday, October 11th at 10 AM the International Dory Racing Committee will hold the annual Oarmaster’s Cup Race (solo dory race) to crown the best single dory rower  in the land.  All members are welcome to compete, and the public is welcome to attend the races for some exciting waterfront entertainment!

The course will start off the end of the dock at Maritime Gloucester and travel out around Ten Pound Island, then back to the start (approximately 1.75 miles).  The race dories are provided by the IDRC, but unlike the other races, this race allows individual rowers to compete head to head in a time trial with the best time winning rights to the Cup.  Refreshments will follow the races offering a chance for the winner to soak up the admiration of his peers.  Don’t miss this battle of skill and endurance on the water in Gloucester Harbor.
The following weekend, Saturday, October 17th at 9:00 AM, we need members to help out pulling the race dories for the season.  We will meet at Eastern Ave. Self Storage (bring a trailer if available) and we will proceed to the GHS boat ramp to load up the 4 race dories and return to the tent for the winter.  Many hands make light work (especially nesting a couple 800# dories), so please mark your calendars for the 17th.

Baby Whale Losing It’s Battle To Get Back To The Sea In #RockportMA On Front Beach Photo From Jen @RockportGirl

Jen writes-

So incredibly sad today to see this small whale losing its battle to get back out to sea. The tide was relentlessly coming in with cold seas and high waves as these men jumped in to help. In the end there was nothing they could do. Never seen something like this in person. As animal lovers it was very hard to watch . RIP little whale.

Anyone?

Forgive me if it is common knowledge that somehow I am not privy to, but humor me nonetheless.

Can someone tell me what is happening in this newly cleared space at the end of Whittemore Street in Gloucester?

My grandmother lived on Riverside Avenue for years and I can remember scurrying around that neck of the woods when I was little….nice memories.

Anyway, I noticed this while heading under the train bridge a couple of weekends ago and meant to ask.

Baltasar Gracian Quote of the Week from Greg Bover (Five Year Anniversary Of Greg’s Quote Of The Week Posts)

“A wise man learns more from his enemies than a fool from his friends.”

Baltasar Gracian (1601-1658)

image

Born in the Spanish province of Aragon, Gracian studied theology in Zaragoza and took holy orders as a Jesuit in 1633. He was admired as an orator in his lifetime and much sought after for his sermons, which featured such novelties as reading letters purportedly sent from hell. Such flourishes were frowned upon by his superiors, whom he so frequently disobeyed that he was eventually banished to a small village in the Pyrenees. He is best known today for his satirical pilgrimage novel Criticon and his compendium of maxims The Art of Worldly Wisdom. These were so admired by Schopenhauer that he translated them into German. Later thinkers including Nietzsche, Defoe and Gide cite him as an influence.

With this post the Quote of the Week celebrates five years with Good Morning Gloucester, about two hundred and fifty entries. Just so you know, I write the bios based on my research to give the quote context, and one can click on the name or the picture that Joey adds to be connected to a Wikipedia entry for that particular author. Sometimes the adages are only attributed when I can’t find evidence of the direct quote; famous quipsters like Abraham Lincoln and Yogi Berra are often credited with things others actually said first.

I am always encouraged by your comments, and your suggestions are welcome too.

Many thanks to Joey and the GMG team for creating a forum where these lines can be shared. I find it astonishing how much wisdom there is in the world, and how the thoughts of famous men and women can apply to my own life. I hope you do too.

The KENDALL HOTEL at the ENGINE 7 FIREHOUSE

Kendall Hotel Dalmation -2 ©Kim Smith 2015.jpgKendall Hotel -4 ©Kim Smith 2015.jpgLocated adjacent to MIT and with Google offices across the street, the Kendall Hotel is one of the few remaining historical buildings in technology-driven Kendall Square. Built in 1874, The Engine 7 Firehouse has been renovated with modern conveniences while beautifully preserving its authenticity and is replete with 19th-century inspired furnishings, American folk art, and complimentary breakfast “fit for a fireman.”

Thursday at the Kendall Hotel we installed custom-made planters with treillage to create a partially enclosed courtyard. We planted gorgeous mums in an array of fall colors; next to come is holiday decor (with lights!); and in the spring we’ll really make it sing. Stop by the whimsical and welcoming Kendall Hotel and have a look!

Or better even, plan to have lunch at the Hotel’s restaurant, the Black Sheep, where you’ll find delicious home-style classic American cuisine (with choices for meat-eaters and vegetarians) and all made from fresh, locally sourced organic ingredients.Kendall Hotel -3 ©Kim Smith 2015

“The artwork found throughout the hotel was carefully curated by owner Charlotte Forsythe, and includes some pieces by local artists commissioned specifically for The Kendall. Many items on display are an example of form and function, including a clock by Concord, MA artist Richard Dunbrack, which is comprised of “significant period artifacts and found objects.” A textile appliqué by Chris Roberts-Antieau, called “Circus,” is draped over the couch in the upper lobby where ceramic work by artist and owner, Charlotte, is also on display.

Pieces by American artists Richard Merkin and John Whipple hang in the upper lobby; Whipple’s technique of layering collage elements with charcoal and paint, yet letting the wood beneath show through, is reflective of the care and creativity that has helped revive the firehouse. Prints by Leonard Baskin and John Imber, both celebrated New England artists, can be found in the guest rooms. JJ Fandetti, the son of owners Charlotte and Gerald, also contributed several collage pieces, including his aptly named “Firehouse Machine.”

Every year for more years than I can count, we go to the Topsfield Fair. Nothing changes but it is always fun. Love the animals and touch them all and end up with puffy eyes, hives and wheezing lungs; but so worth it.
