goodlinens on Main Street any day now!

goodlinens is ready enough for its soft launch opening! More finishing and architectural details will continue through the summer and into the fall. Featured artisan panels and more inventory and stock will be added. Yet you just might have the chance to step inside if not today then any day soon! Jo Anne is a blur of activity.

Call ahead for the best subs of summer. Gloucester beaches sandwich directory.

20160724_100817-001

Hungry? Pack light. You’ll pass great sandwich shops, locally owned and operated, en route to Gloucester’s magnificent beaches. Jeff’s Variety can set you up for a good lunch to go wherever you’re headed including Good Harbor Beach, Long Beach, or the back shore. Jeff says that there are many repeat customers that come back each and every season–for years–on their way to Good Harbor Beach. IF you have a big group, you can order trays with finger sandwiches. Sandwich platters featuring Virgilio’s rolls need at least two days notice to prepare. They’re open Sundays. What else? “Yes!” the answer to my question if they have plenty of call ahead requests from cars caught in traffic. Passengers calling only, please!

Scroll down the post for a one-stop, sub-shopping Gloucester directory with phone numbers and links. I could add in our favorite choices from each place.

Lovin’ some Loons

Yesterday cousin Wendy and I got up at 3:30 am to drive out to Quabbin Reservoir in Belchertown, MA out near Amherst.   With our camera’s in hand we were blessed with the company of this Loon family who were happy just to hang out, fish and be adorable!  I’ve never seen a Loon this close and never realized how large they were.  This particular family had 2 babies who were 4-5 weeks old and starting to learn how to fish for themselves. (FYI these were taken with a 600 mm lens so that we could stay a respectable distance from the family.  Enjoy nature, but be respectful!)  Have a Sunday Funday!

Evening in White Album-

“Hi Joey,

Long time since I’ve offered  photos, but here are some from last Friday’s “Evening in White.” Always a good time not to mention a worthy charity.  Most of these photos were taken by my friend, Pamela Nicholson with the gracious permission of all those pictured.”

HELLO MAMA MONARCH!

Plant and they will come!

Female Monarch depositing eggs -1 copyright Kim Smith

Alighting on the buds of our Marsh Milkweed plants, you can see in these photos that the female Monarch is curling her abdomen to the underside to deposit eggs. She will go from bud to bud and leaf to leaf ovipositing one egg at a time. A female, on average, deposits 700 eggs during her lifetime, fewer in hot, dry weather.Female Monarch depositing eggs copyright Kim Smith

Female Monarch Butterfly and Marsh Milkweed (Asclepias incarnata)

Butterflies do not “lay” eggs; we say oviposit or deposit. And you wouldn’t describe a caterpillar as hatched, but that it has emerged or eclosed.

Grow Marsh Milkweed and Common Milkweed and you most definitely will have female Monarchs calling your garden home!Female Monarch depositing eggs -2 copyright Kim SmithIn the above photo you can see how she is contorting her abdomen to correctly position the eggs

Live blogging from Cape Ann Museum and Our Lady: eloquent and moving portrait from Linda Brayton and Jen Holmgren on their grandfather and great-grandfather, notable architect Halfdan Hanson

L-R Linda Brayton, Jennifer Holmgren, Lisa Sawall (Sleeper’s grand niece) before a special Beauport Sleeper McCann tour focusing on the  correspondence and collaboration of Sleeper and architect Halfdan Hanson which was led by Lorna.

Photographs in this post are from yesterday’s special Beauport Sleeper McCann program, stemming from the Cape Ann Museum Design/Build exhibition. Lorna Condon, senior curator of Historic New England’s Library and Archives, led this tremendous tour.

Neither Sleeper not Hanson family members knew they’d be there together at this tour. Yet members of both  families wore the same shoes!

Other special guests included Chris Sicuranza from the Mayor’s Office and the Rev. Rona Tyndall, Outreach and Volunteer Coordinator for the Grace Center of Gloucester. Mayor Romeo Theken also wanted to go.

Last Saturday’s Block Party

Finally….last Saturday’s Block Party’s photos! It was great and well attended.

SENSATIONAL FRENCH WINE DINNER!!!

Words won’t adequately describe how delicious was Passport’s French dinner. I had only my cell phone camera with me but I think you will get the idea.

IMG_97271st Course ~ Superb panko crusted super fresh big eye tuna, crispy rare, with sweet and spicy sriracha glaze, and carrot snow pea slaw. My husband says it is his new favorite entree, anywhere, anytime. Served with sparkling Brut Dargent Blanc de Blanc

IMG_9730Rock shrimp in basil pesto with Danielle’s Pastaio escarole, radicchio, and cheese ravioli. U-n-b-e-l-i-e-v-a-b-l-e! With Jean and Paul Benoit Droin Chablis.

IMG_9740Beyond amazingly delicious hard sear all natural sirloin with marchand de vin, potato gratin, and braised kale. Served with Louis Latour Pinot Noir Domaine de Valmoissine.

Nick DiFazio from M.S. Walker did an outstanding job selecting the accompanying wines. The three entree-sized servings were simply exquisite and, along with the blood orange sorbet for dessert, it was one of my favorite dinners I have ever experienced. Thank you Passports for the wonderfully joyful cooking. Hats off to Chefs Eric, Jeremy, and Alex!

The cost of the wine dinners is 45.00 per person, which in my opinion is an extraordinarily low price considering the caliber of the food and wine. Each course is served with a VERY generous glass of perfectly paired wine, four glasses in all. IMG_9752
