After Jose, What a Weekend!!!
Six Taste Spice Mix ~
Fall is Vata season through the lens of Ayurveda.
It is a time to eat warm grounding foods and to have all six tastes represented at each meal:
Sweet
Sour
Salty
Bitter
Pungent
Astringent
This means to focus on foods that are naturally in season at this time of year!
Sweet fall foods include pumpkin, squashes, root vegetables, whole grains (quinoa and amaranth are the most warming), pears, persimmons, apples, whole milk dairy and fresh dates or figs. Cook your squashes and your roots.
Salty fall foods are most important for the person who deals with a dry/cold vata imbalance. Water follows salt so salt in this context is meant to hydrate – specifically good salt: Celtic sea salt, Himalayan pink salt, Fleur de sel, etc. Salts that are not bleached or processed but are whole – and balanced by minerals that naturally occur alongside sodium in the earth. Feels Kind of Like the Jetsons Cartoon
Just stepped off of our super early flight out of Kentucky and landed in Newark hungry and in desperate need of coffee.
We have a three hour lay over and a little work to do so we saddled up at a breakfast counter with work space and put in our virtual order. Super easy and convenient…but felt a little weird about the total lack of interaction. Good news is you don’t need to tip the iPAd.

Pet of the Week-Rose

My brother Axel and I traveled all the way from Texas. We braved hurricane Harvey with our loving foster family who kept us safe and made sure we could get here as soon as possible to find a loving forever home.
We adore each-other so are looking for a family willing to take two! We are mixed small breed pups, maybe some poodle, chihuahua or terrier tossed in but lots and lots of adorable is the only breed we can guarantee! We are affectionate and outgoing and the most frequent word used to describe us by the staff here, “cute” said with a huge smile. We both love soft beds, toys, blankets to burrow under and treats. We get along with other small dogs and are being room mates with Bianca, a scruffy little terrier rescue gal from Puerto Rico who is also looking for a home.
If you love small dogs, have the space and time to devote to us we promise to be loyal and loving to the end of our days. To see Axel and all of the dogs and cats at the Christopher Cutler Rich Animal Shelter please go to our website capeannanimalaid.org

BEAUTIFUL AND ATMOSPHERIC FOG DESCENDING OVER EASTERN POINT
FV Endeavor in the Foggy Sunset
Heading out to photograph wild creatures, instead I found fog. Beginning in the afternoon and lasting into sunset, waves and ribbons of fog enveloped the east end of Gloucester until only shapes and silhouettes were visible.
A wedding reception was underway at the Yacht Club, lots of folks were out watching the setting sun, and a photo shoot was taking place on the Dogbar. Returning home, Niles Beach and Ten Pound Island were even more shrouded in fog. Final stop was the Paint Factory to catch the last glimmer of light. Looking towards Ten Pound Island from the Paint Factory, in the last Instagram you can see the sliver of a crescent moon.

Essex Built Schooner Finds Latest Home In Brooklyn
My son Brian forwarded to me this post on oldsaltdog.com. As the post points out, Highlander Sea spent some years at the Gloucester Marine Railways undergoing a major refit .
Pilot, New Schooner Restaurant/Bar Opens in Brooklyn to Cheers and a Few Jeers

Pilot, a new seasonal restaurant and bar on an historic schooner has opened in Brooklyn, NY, off Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 6 on the East River. The opening has been met with cheers and a few jeers. The cheers are from those who enjoy the opportunity to dine on the water, and jeers from those who would prefer that the Highlander Sea, ex-Pilot, be restored and continue sailing.
The restaurant on the deck of a schooner is the second such venture by Alex and Miles Pincus, who also own Grand Banks, a seasonal restaurant on the fishing schooner Sherman Zwickerdocked at Pier 25 in Manhattan. See our review from 2014.
Highlander Sea, originally christened Pilot, was a gaff-rigged topsail schooner built in 1924 in Essex, Massachusetts by J.F. James and Sons. Designed by Starling Burgess, she served for 47 years as a Boston harbor pilot ship.
In the 1970’s she was sold through several owner who used her for voyaging and sail training. Renamed Star Pilot and then Highlander Sea, the schooner was purchased in 2002 and underwent a major refit to serve as a community tall ship for Port Huron, Michigan. In 2011, the schooner was moved to Gloucester, MA and subsequently put up for sale. Her arrival in New York in 2016 was captured by Will van Dorp on his Tugster blog.
Here are some previous posts on GMG documenting the schooner’s stay here in Gloucester.
