WHY IS DAN ALLEN’S HONEY THE BEST YOU’VE EVER TASTED? -BECAUSE IT’S FROM GOD’S COUNTRY!

Joey often uses the expression “God’s Country” when describing East Gloucester, not only because of the beauty that surrounds but because of the wonderful community of East Gloucester friends. I came home to find in my mail basket three jars of Dan Allen’s amazingly delicious ‘Peace, Love, and Honey,’ made by honey bees gathering nectar in his rambling and rambunctiously gloious garden. At Dan’s garden, you’ll find an exquisite array of Massachusetts native flowering trees and shrubs, as well as cultivated herbs, fruit trees, vegetables, flowers, and vines, all of which have made his golden yellow honey rich with a unique complexity of flavors and fragrance. At our home, we eat honey nearly everyday, on toast, in tea, and I love to cook with it. Dan’s is simply the best I have ever tasted.

SONGBIRDS FROM DAN ALLEN’S BEAUTIFUL GARDEN

Friend and East Gloucester resident Dan Allen sent along these wonderful snapshots of recent visits by songbirds in his beautiful garden. Dan’s garden is abundant with wildflowers, food, and welcome shelter for birds, bees and butterflies. Thank you Dan!Nothing common about this gorgeous little warbler, a male Common Yellowthroat. Yellowthroats migrate north from winter homes in Florida, Mexico, and the Caribbean.

Yesterday I posted photos of a male Eastern Towhee. Dan’s photo is of the female! Wherever the male’s feathers are black, the female’s are milk chocolate brown.

The Rose-breasted Grosbeak is another nesting migrant to Cape Ann. They eat fruit, seeds, nuts, insects, and especially Love sunflower seeds. Only the males have this striking feather pattern; the female’s feathers are shaded in quiet tones of gray, tan, and brown. During the winter months, Rose-breasted Grosbeaks live in the Caribbean, and Central and South America.

Can you imagine–sixty five years–truly an inspiration!

June 24th was my mother and father-in-laws 65th wedding anniversary. We’ve been celebrating all week and last night we had a beautiful dinner at Duckworth’s, our family’s go-to place for special occasions (and every other excuse to head to dinner there). Dinner was beautiful in every way, from the exquisite entrees, appetizers, and desserts to the outstanding service provided by Dan and Colleen. Thank you Duckworth Family for making our family’s celebration wonderfully memorable.

A Duckworth’s Valentine’s

Thanks to the fabulous Chef Ken Duckworth, along with his wonderfully welcoming and hard working staff, for making a Valentine’s to remember. Duckworth’s was overflowing with guests last night–no one wanted to leave as it was so warm and cozy there–and Tom and I just had the best time catching up with neighborhood friends. We all relished in our good fortune to be seated at the Duckworth’s Table for Valentine’s Day. Thank you Chef Ken and Family for the Best Ever Valentine’s Day Dinner!
