Gloucester At Dawn- Rose’s Marine 4:55AM 4/16/12

When I took this photo I figured the boat in the background would be the focal point but then when I was looking at it in my photo editor the grain in the wood decking in the foreground really stood out to me.

Thomas Laighton on the Rails From Bill O’Connor

Hi Joey,

The Thomas Laighton was on the rails the other day and I was fortunate to be around to take this shot.  She’s owned by the Isles of Shoals Steamship Company out of Portsmouth, NH.  Apparently she is a replica of a victorian steamship and is named after the Thomas Laighton, a native of Portsmouth who was known as a politician, writer and businessman who left it all behind to live on the Isle of Shoals, first as the lighthouse keeper on White Island, then as a hotelier and land owner having bought up the other islands: Hog, Smuttynose and Cedar, and is remembered as the the ‘King’ of the Isles.

Enjoy!

This one looks really nice full screen. The detail in the background is stuff the human eye doesnt see at ths time of the morning but is only captured with the long exposure taken at three different focal lengths and then combined so everything is in relative focus.

Lobster boats, dories, reflections off the water, symmetry, repetition, Gloucester at dawn, Rocky Neck In the background, Cape Pond Ice, the inner working harbor, there’s really not much this one is missing.

Available as an 8×10, 16×20 prints or 16x 20 canvas print which I think just make the reflections and colors pop in a painterly way (the Canvas wraps also don’t require framing).

Hope you like it.  This one is gong in my favorites pile.  I may even blow it up for myself.

to me it’s very atmospheric with both the boats in the fore and background somewhat visible even though it’s very early morning.  It was a 4 second exposure, f4.5, iso 200.

Dory Fishing on Schooner ADVENTURE

A large crowd was treated to an outstanding talk by Ron Gilson, author of An Island No More, at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum on Wednesday evening. Ron introduced his slide illustrated reminiscence of an eight day trip on Adventure when he was 17 years old in 1951 with random vignettes of his youth on the wharves of Gloucester Harbor.

Someone once said something like, “We experience life only once–as a child. All the rest is memory.” At age 79, Ron brought us back to the days of his youth. With some emotion, he evoked all of the excitement, adventure and sense of awe that many of us feel when we search our own memories of growing up. His respect and love for an era now gone by enveloped the audience and made us all feel privileged to share his experience and memories.
