The Whitelaw Hotel Lobby

I can’t attest for the rooms as I didn’t get past the lobby, but the decor was sexy as hell. Those Victorian style chairs were way oversized. I’ve never seen such bold statements in decor in person. The only thing that might have come close was Graceland as far as over the top design in a small space.

It’s not demure, it’s not understated, they went for it in a big way. This probably wouldn’t work in too many places but it works here in South Beach.

The Whitelaw Hotel looks pretty nondescript from the outside but once you step foot inside it’s a visual feast.

This is the scene up and down Ocean Drive although at dinner time most of these seats are filled through the night. It’s loud and festive and each restaurant has its own vibe with different styling and menus. It’s very eclectic with tons of shopping one block back on Collins Ave and then a little wilder a street back from that on Washington. Lincoln Road Mall is where many artists and fine restaurants have set up shop. Lincoln Road Mall is an open air strip with a courtyard in the middle of two long rows of funky store fronts and cafes.

Tortilla Soup- Supper idea for Tuesday

The best part of this colorful, tasty, broth-based dish? Everyone at the table can customize their serving with add-ins of their choice. And it’s simple to pull together, especially if you use precooked chicken. Here’s the recipe!0907_ff0906_tortillasoup

Where Zat Winner!

MARDET IS THE WINNER!!(close second was Maureen) Congratulations! This was the longest running contest to date!

On Island Rd. in Essex, coming back from Hardy’s Creek, you look off to your right where that house was built on the hill a few years ago and the trees line the driveway.

South Beach At Dawn- Service Alley

As beautiful and funky as South Beach is, the service alley behind the hotels are shady as hell. This is about as far down this alley I’m gonna walk in the name or art.

South Beach At Dawn

Of course I can never sleep in the morning so instead of waking up The Mrs I went for a little picture taking expedition.

It Doesn’t Suck- Lifeguard Station 9th Street Beach

As soon as we checked in we grabbed lunch at The Pelican, not cheap but always fantastic. Highly recommend it. The rest of the day was spent at the beach where The Mrs read and I napped. Dinner we walked down to Lincoln Road and dined at Sushi Samba. Sushi Samba is an Asian/Peruvian/Brazilian fusion place. I The Mrs said it was ok and I thought it was just a bit better than ok. The service all the way around since we’ve been here has been fantastic.

The Beacon Hotel South Beach Miami

Here’s our hotel, The Beacon.  It’s nice, I’d say it’s a three and a half star hotel with a five star location and very friendly staff.  Most rooms on South Beach are old hotels that have been renovated and they’re all over the map as far as how tastefull or how much money they pour back into the joints.  They did a fine job at the Beacon with flat screens tvs and new tile.  It’s not extravagant but just fine for the Mrs very finicky tastes.

Welcome To Miami!

After 8 months with only the major holidays off and working seven days a week it’s finally vacation time.  ahhhhhh

Horny Penguins

Here our horny penguin begins his courting by pinning down his mate for some one on one back door penguin action at The New England Aquarium.  What are they feeding these things, a potent concoction of crushed up Viagra, Cialis and Levitra tabs mixed with herring?

Yeah Baby!

It’s been 2 years since Tony went “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door”. Much too early. I miss  him winter kayaking in the harbor, knocking about in his Land Rover, walking his dog, quoting  Dylan….being a friend.

RIP, Tony
