Looking to make a huge impact with a bunch of like minded folks who love our fair city?  What a fantastic job that this group does each week by picking a section of the city and meeting to spend an hour or so picking up trash  together.  If you are new to town or are a long time resident, you can’t help but love the positive energy you will glean from this group of Gloucester’s finest.

Did You Know? (Artemis)

That Artemis was the daughter of Leto and Zeus, and the twin of Apollo. Artemis is the goddess of the wilderness, the hunt and wild animals, and fertility?  She was often depicted with the crescent of the moon above her forehead and was sometimes identified with Selene (goddess of the moon). Artemis was one of the Olympians and a virgin goddess. Her main vocation was to roam mountain forests and uncultivated land with her nymphs in attendance hunting for lions, panthers, hinds and stags.

I had the really nice opportunity today to meet Ylva Callewaert, owner of Artemis Custom Framing (20 Maplewood Ave., Gloucester www.artemiscustomframing.com); a really lovely woman from Holland with the sweetest Dutch accest, who is also a great framer.  She chose the name Artemis for her business because she loves the independent nature of the goddess Artemis, and because her husband’s business is called Sundance –  and Apollo, the twin of Artemis, is the god of the sun.

Ylva has a great selection of frames, only frames archivally, and is happy to give advice to artists on their framing, as well as free quotes.  If you are an artist or an art buyer who has framing needs, check out Artemis.  Ylva is now a new subscriber to Good Morning Gloucester.

It’s gonna be a Bang Bang Weekend for the Bandit Kings

This band is a whole lotta fun. Always mixing it up with new songs. They have many originals to enjoy and their stage presence is very entertaining as well. If you can sit still I will be totally amazed. Plus if you do not get enough of them  at one gig there is always the other and perchance, take a trip over the bridge to get out of Dodge, so to speak.

Beeman Students Plant Dune Grass

From the Beacon
Wicked Local Staff Photo by Ian Hurley Beeman School fourth graders Joshua Gibbs and Juleika Rodriguez, l to r, plant dune grass at Good Harbor Beach in Gloucester alongside their classmates, representatives from the Gloucester Conservation Division as well as Gortons on Wednesday, April 6. Over 100 students worked to plant over 7000 strands of grass to repair the damaged and depleted dunes.

With much debate happening around the city about just what to do with Gloucester’s waterfront, it might be refreshing for some to know that local youth are learning about the importance of caring for our coastline well before they reach the age that they have to make such decisions.

Students and teachers from Beeman Elementary School’s fourth- and fifth-grade classes recently combined with the Gloucester Conservation Commission and Gorton’s Seafood to plant dune grass in the dunes of Good Harbor Beach. The GCC reported that 7,500 culms of American Beach Grass were planted by volunteers from the school and Gorton’s last week, with Gorton’s footing the bill for the dune grass and sending 40 or so volunteers to help the students out.

The project is part of an effort by the school to teach students about the importance of a healthy coastline in a community that is surrounded by the ocean. It is a natural follow up to a similar school project held in 2010, which was funded by a grant from MIT and worked in conjunction with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

“It’s something we call ‘Living Blue,’” explains Beeman principal Ellen Sibley. “It focuses on the added responsibility of a coastal community to live green because we are the gatekeepers of the ocean.”

GMG Introduced to the Elephants By local Good Egg Jo-Ann Castano

Hi Joey,

Andy and I are still on our wild journey through Sri Lanka and India.  Pulled out the old GMG travelers sticker here and there along the roads.   I actually wore it on my shirt at this on site location…. what a trip, this ain’t Gloucester.

Elephants don’t forget!

Elephants at the Pinnawela elephant orphanage in Sri Lanka introduced to Good Morning Gloucester Up close a friendly…

I started off wearing my GMG travelers badge because so many elephants to meet and greet.

Pinnawela orphanage is northwest of the town Kegalla, halfways between the capitol Colombo and  the ancient royal residence Kandy in the hills of central Sri Lanka. It was established 1975 by the Sri Lanka Wildlife  department. This 24 acres large elephant orphanage is a also breeding pace for elephants, twenty elephants were  born since 1984, and it has the greatest herd of elephants in captivity in the world.

We headed over there to introduce the elephants to GoodMorningGloucester….. and they are big guys!  Close up of one of the caretakers and some really big guys.

This guy zeroed in on Good Morning Gloucester sticker right away.  Nothing like wanting to shake hands.

Greetings Good Morning Gloucester from Sri Lanka where the elephants come walking out of the woods to the

streets like we have deer.

Did You Know? (Alchemy)

That Alchemy refers to a quest for a fabled elixir capable of turning copper and other base metals to gold and also a quest for something to prevent human beings’ bodies from becoming old?  Alchemy is both a philosophy and an ancient practice that seeks to prepare the “elixir of longevity”, accomplish the transmutation into gold, and attain ultimate wisdom (the ability to effectively and efficiently apply perceptions and knowledge and so produce a desired result).

Mark McDonough’s Alchemy of Art exhibits at Alchemy, in addition to being an abundant and extremely generous (and delicious) gift to artists and the community, encompasses the components of Alchemy.  He provides an opportunity for artists to utilize the elixir he has created with his wisdom, to turn their creative endeavors into gold, and in the process do the same for his business; while renewing our youthful exuberance for what we all love to do.  One of my favorite passages in the Bible is: “He fills my life with good things. My youth is renewed like the eagle’s (Psalm 103:5)”, and that is what Mark sets the stage to happen for exhibiting artists.

I can’t thank everyone enough for turning out in such large numbers, on such a miserable, cold, rainy evening; some of you having traveled from such long distances to be there.  The art opening and book release was a wonderful event, made perfect for me by the totally unexpected arrival of Joey C., who was so instrumental in all of it coming about.

The opening and book release is over, but my exhibit will be up through May 7, so if you couldn’t make it last night (or if you were there but couldn’t see the exhibit because of all the people), I hope you’ll stop into Alchemy at 3 Duncan Street, Gloucester, see the exhibit at leisure and enjoy Alchemy’s great ambiance, food and people (the staff there is awesome).  I also left a bin of prints, cards and some books (and remember, 20% of sales of those items, and 10% of framed art sales goes to the Gloucester Education Foundation).

Also, Did You Know? books are now in the process of being distributed to retail locations.  As of today, you can get them at Willow Rest, Cape Ann Museum Gift Shop, Cricket Press and Dogtown Books.  I will be visiting with my friend Bob Ritchie, at my favorite Gloucester bookstore, Dogtown Books, 132 Main Street, Gloucester on Saturday from 11:00 to 1:00 and signing books, if anyone would like to come by (and buy) and say hi and get a Did You Know? Book signed.  As they are distributed to other locations, I will update the locations on my website at http://www.khanstudiointernational.com/did%20you%20know%20book.htm.  If you are out of area and would like to order a book, you can go to the website to order a copy to be shipped to you.  Also, if you have a favorite book or gift shop that you’d like to see carry the book, mention it to them.  It will take me awhile to get around Cape Ann, and there are many places I don’t know about and could miss.

Finally, there was a guest book at the Alchemy opening last night; however it was totally buried and hidden behind all the people.  If you would like to be on my email list to receive notice of future exhibits, book releases, and such, please email me at khanstudio@comcast.net.   Thanks again to everyone who braved such nasty weather to turn out and make my first Cape Ann exhibit opening and book release such an amazing thing.  Since moving to Cape Ann, I tell my mother every day about all the really nice people I keep meeting; last night she got to meet many of you and now knows firsthand what I was talking about.

Thursday Night Blues Jam at the Rhumb Line To Host Ed Scheer and Mario Perrett

A few words from Dave,

This thursday at the Rhumb Line features  the Batman and Robin of the music world: that dynamic duo of Ed “Ed” Scheer and Mario Perrett. Eddie, being one of our favorite drumblers and focalists gotta drag out our buddy Mario, movie star ,and cutie-pie saxist, for a cruize around the block every once in a while. So, the \world will come to a screeching halt upon the stage  as we tie up the hands of time, and make it scream uncle. Rheum-er has it that there will be a plentitude of sit-ins and  spit-ups. You won’t wanna miss it.
And then Sunday, Mark Earley Productions® is proud to present….me. Once again , Mark is forcing me to play with some incredible Jazz musicians at THE STONE SOUP in IPSWICH. From 5 to 8 p.m. I’ll be cranking it out with such immortals as  John Hyde, on keys, Jim Gwin, Fred’s brother, on skins, Tom Palance, Jack’s brother, on trumpet, and  Mark Earley on saxes . Should be a hoot. Free bibs for every fan if you make it past the first set. Food is pretty good, too ,I hear .

Inside Our Lady of Good Voyage Church From Bill O’Connor

Hey Joe,

I was passing Our Lady of Good Voyage Church on Friday and saw the door open, so I thought I would have a look inside.  I haven’t been in there for quite some time, and as soon as I walked through the door there was the strong residual odor of frankincense, which instantly made it feel comfortable and familiar. I have vivid memories of how the altar boys would swing the incense burner (the thurible or censer) as they walked down the aisle. On the last steps out they would make it do a full loop over their heads, and Father Alves would smile [with consternation].

I had forgotten about the rich fishing ties that the church had to the community until I saw the décor inside again.  Notice the model ships on the wall between the stations of the cross and along the choir balcony.  I think the swag under the boats on the balcony is actually fishing net!

Enjoy!

Spring is Here! Time to Get Out of the House

A little of that Cape Ann winter hibernation thing is still going on around here (especially on cold, rainy days like today), but tomorrow you’ll have the chance to shake off that favorite blanket you’ve had draped over you for the last three months, get off your couch, and step outside into actual Spring sunshine. Come on down to the Community House in Rockport where we’re serving Twin Lights Soda, Coffee, Cupcakes and giving you the opportunity to take a photo with Motif No. 1 itself! There’ll be some dancing magic too, and if you’re lucky, maybe some GMG contributors will even show up to shake a leg. Rumor has it that no one cuts a rug like Paul Morrison, the smoothest scientist in Rockport. Admission is a Pay-What-You-Can donation, with all proceeds going to support programming for Motif No. 1 Day & Rockport’s HarvestFest. Check out www.rockportartfestivals.com for more info and we hope to see all of our friends and neighbors there for a real Community bash!

Did You Know? (Three Sheets to the Wind)

<object width=”425″ height=”344″><param name=”movie” value=”http://www.youtube.com/v/B6Jd2rv15-4?hl=en&fs=1″></param><param name=”allowFullScreen” value=”true”></param><param name=”allowscriptaccess” value=”always”></param><embed src=”http://www.youtube.com/v/B6Jd2rv15-4?hl=en&fs=1” type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” allowscriptaccess=”always” allowfullscreen=”true” width=”425″ height=”344″></embed></object>

That Three Sheets to the Wind is an old sailing term and refers to a ship whose sheets (lines) have come loose, causing the sails to flap uncontrolled and the ship to shudder and roll (like a staggering drunk) and meander at the mercy of the elements?

Three Sheets to the Wind is also a Gloucester chantey/sea music group.  Many of the crew have years of established song and sea history to offer and create a perfect storm of song and good cheer.  Their vocals, harmonies and instrument skills are phenomenal, and they have such a great time performing and drawing the audience into the fun.  The group has performed in venues such as The Gloucester’s Mayor’s Cup schooner races, Essex Music Festival, Mystic Sea Music Festival 2006, Essex Shipbuilding Museum Basin Fest, Essex Clamfest, Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festivals, Lowell’s Boat Shop events, Salem Antique and Wooden Boat Show, Press Room Shanty sings, American Schooner Association annual meetings, Rocky Neck Nights on the Neck, Gloucester Reads Literacy events, Gloucester Block Parties and Middle Street Walks, shipboard events, Cape Ann Museum events as well as their weekly chantey sings at the Brew Pub at 8:30 pm on Tuesday evenings.  The singers and players that make it all possible include: Peter and Joanne Souza from Schooner Adventure, Tim Perkins, George Thompson, Alex Thompson, Liz Duff, Gardi Winchester, Barry O’ Brien, Martha Bowen, Carol Karlson, Roger Hussey, Leslie Wind, Tony Hilliard, Janet Young, Graham and Jan Walker, Gary Foreman, Jim Milone, Kevin Quinn, Steve Willard, Ray Spiecker, Judy Keith, John Hicks, Audi Lane and many other voices who often join in with the crew, like Paco, featured playing his Excalibur Anglo Concertina.

This isn’t great video, but you can hear them and experience a little of the roaring good time we all had there last night.  I am not a beer drinker, so wouldn’t normally be apt to go to the Brew Pub, but I love good chantey singing, and Three Sheets does that a flair.  I may become a regular Tuesday night Brew Pubber and learn to like beer just to enjoy and take part with them.  They make the old Newfie seafaring blood of my grandfather race through my veins, and provide a quintessential Gloucester fisherman experience that you can’t help but love.
