"Gone To The Dogs! The Continuous Saga of the Spiny Dogfish in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean"

Hello Joey,
I wanted to remind people of our seminar this week by Dr. James Sulikowski, entitled "Gone To The Dogs! The Continuous Saga of the Spiny Dogfish in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean: Using New Methods to Challenge Old Paradigms for Better Management".  The seminar will be held Thursday, 7pm, at the Gloucester Maritime Heritage Center.  Could you post this reminder and/or re-post our attached seminar announcement?
Thanks so much,
Emily Chandler

Two things: 1.I need your vote and 2. I am looking for new show ideas!

Happy Wednesday!  I need your help in this contest.  I know that GMG is everywhere and has lots of readers and this Cape Ann Girl needs some voting love from you.  My Spiced Cranberry Pumpkin Minis with Cashew Butter can win me some cash if I get the most votes by Friday night.  Easy to vote-simply go to:

www.zoyeoil.com

and go to the top of the page to “Recipe Contest” and then “Vote”

You do have to register but they are not going to send you a ton of junk emails. You can print out the recipe for yourself from the page if you want to as well—thank you so much!

And now on to part two—Between cook offs, holidays, moving to a new place, life, vacations (no, not mine), cooking trips, new hips (again, not mine) and regular everyday life it has been a very very long time since I have shot a show–last Fall to be exact!

However, we are all in luck–my first guest of the year is going to be the famous Clark Dexter!  We are making baked stuffed clams from the Hearthside days and he will be sharing the recipe with us.  I will have all of the details on my blog and here on GMG before the show airs on Cape Ann TV.

Of all of the shows I have done, whenever I am out and about and people talk to me about Inspired Cooking, the comment I hear over and over again is how much people love watching Clark, hearing his stories and seeing him make his delicious food.  I love that stuff!

Does anyone else come to mind that you might like to see on Inspired Cooking?  I love suggestions.  And they don’t have to be professional chefs.  How about someone who makes the best cookies or cake you have ever eaten?  Someone who has developed a recipe that they want to share?  A neighborhood legend who makes the best bread or  sauce ever?  I want to highlight those people on Cape Ann and beyond and I need your help to find them.

Please send me an email at laurielufkin@yahoo.com or comment on this post with your ideas.

Now that Spring has Sprung hopefully I will be posting more regularly.  Thanks again for your voting support and please, keep those ideas coming!  Laurie

Laurel Tarantino Needs to Get Something Off her Chest

a 030

Hi Joey,  I was thinking of you and all the wonderful deeds you do for our community, which lead me to thinking…”I wonder if Good Morning Gloucester” is all about the good, the fun, and the beautiful.  Please know that I would never expect to use GMG as a podium for one of my maddening rants, but I wanted to throw these two photos at you, trying perhaps, to get someone elses blood boiling other than my own.

While walking my dog this morning on Pavillion Beach I took the photo of the makeshift ashtray in which someone has made a poor attempt at NOT being a Litterbug.  Seriously?Take it one step further and find a trash barrel!  Please!!!  So, I’m posting my photo into my album on the computer, which takes all of a few minutes, and in that time someone actually cleaned out their car in the parking lot across the street from my house.  See second photo.  I couldn’t believe it, then asked myself,  “Why can’t I ever catch them in the act?”

Now I’ll take an hour out of my day and walk the beach with a Yellow Bag, to pick up some things that others have been so unkind to leave behind.

I don’t ask that you forward this to your most informative website, but I do thank you for letting me vent!  If there ever comes a time when you have a local “rant” section, I’m readily  available.

Yellow Trash bags for anyone desiring to pick up litter can get them any weekday at the Gloucester DPW.  Earth Day ~~~ Everyday!

Send me a bill for the Psychiatric Fees!

Love, Laurel

Duckworth Beach Gourmet To Change Hands and Reopen As Savour Wine and Cheese Shop

We wanted you to be among the first to know that, after much thinking and soul searching, we have decided to sell Duckworth Beach Gourmet. It was a difficult decision, and it wasn’t until we found the right buyer that we became 100% comfortable with the move.

We have had a great run, but we have realized that as individuals we have slightly different passions to pursue. The sale will allow Ken to focus entirely on his restaurant, Duckworth’s Bistrot, which continues to exceed its own stellar reputation. Matt and I want to devote our energies to the catering and personal chef services business. Matt will continue to prepare for catering events using the kitchen at 24 Washington Street, honoring all existing catering commitments and taking new reservations as well.

A Word about the Buyer
Kathleen Erickson has a well-deserved reputation as one of Gloucester’s most knowledgeable wine aficionados. She has worked in all aspects of the wine business, including restaurant, retail, distribution, and education. Most recently, she revamped the wine program at Seabreeze Liquors as their wine manager, and began teaching her wine education classes at Latitude 43 and Alchemy. But, this is her first venture as a business owner, something she has been preparing for over many years. She has chosen the name Savour Wine & Cheese for her new venture. It will offer a greatly expanded wine department along with a gourmet deli featuring some of the same fine cheeses you’ve come to love at DBG.

A Word about Logistics
The store will remain open until mid-May as Duckworth Beach Gourmet. Beginning this week, Kathleen will be working in the store to meet customers and get familiar with our operation. During this time prepared foods and sandwiches will be available, but as we work through our inventory the selections may be lean. For those customers who rely on our prepared foods, we will begin taking special orders so that you may continue to enjoy your favorite items. Please identify yourself the next time you are in the store if you are interested in becoming a "personal chef" customer. For those of you who have gift certificates, you can redeem them this month, though Kathleen has agreed to honor them during the first six months the new store is open. In May, the store may close briefly while Kathleen and Bob renovate the space to accommodate their new concept.

A Farewell and a Greeting
We will continue to host wine tasting events through mid-May and Kathleen will begin promoting her 5-part wine education series, which starts Tuesday, April 26th, at 7:30 p.m. at 24 Washington Street. Check Kathleen’s website, www.thewinephd.com for details, and stay tuned for many more exciting things to come. We hope many of you will stop by to meet the new owners and allow us to thank you in person for your patronage. We are tremendously indebted to you, our customers, for supporting us in so many ways.

Sincerely,
John Lamirande

Mike English Asks For Dough and Tells People He’s Running The Boston Marathon For The Tenth Year

Hi Folks:

Next week I am running my 10th consecutive Boston Marathon.  It is hard to believe that 10 years have passed since I first started running long distances. Growing up in the Boston area, Patriot’s Day was always a special spring holiday.  I remember going into Boston to watch the Marathon finishers thinking “wow that is  a long distance”. 10 years ago I started running and “got hooked” training for the 16 mile race around Cape Ann on Labor Day.  At that time I figured I had trained for 16, what’s a few more and continued to train and increase my distance.  Over the years I have been enjoyed meeting hundreds of people thru training.  I was never a fast runner and have always considered myself a back of the pack runner but I have enjoyed every step of the way.

This year I have decided to raise money for the Boston Living Center (BLC).  BLC is an organization located in Boston that strives to foster the wellness of all HIV+ individuals and respond to the changing needs of the HIV/AIDS community. Through peer-leadership and support they are able to enrich the lives of members by providing education, treatment information, and support services to empower members to live productive lives and participate in family and community activities.  They provide over 40,000 meals annually.

Would you please consider making a donation to the BLC as I strive to complete my 10th Boston?  Any donation will be greatly appreciated.  I have a page setup on First Giving. www.firstgiving.com keyword Mike English

If you are along the route on Monday please keep an eye out for me.  I am hoping to break 6 hours.  No speed records but as long as I finish with a smile on my face I will be happy.  My good friend Terry Sands is running the last 10 miles with me.  For those of you I know from the AnnisquamVillage Players that is usually the time when he convinces me to try out for the play.

A special thank you goes out to my family.  Without their support and allowing me to take up a lot of weekend time I could not do this.

Thanks, Mike English

Peter Prybot and Go Magazine, Air Tran In Flight Magazine

I’m not sure if you guys remember but last summer a freelance writer for Air Tran In Flight Magazine- “GO”, came down the dock to do a story highlighting Gloucester. I spoke with him at length and then a photographer came by a couple of weeks later to take some photos for the story.
About two weeks ago the editor called me to confirm some details about the story before it went to print and that was that. But on my way back home from Naples about an hour ago I just remembered that the writer had mentioned that he was going to also speak with Peter Prybot (I believe the timeframe was either September or October when they came to Gloucester to speak with us).
So I frantically searched my email box for the emails from the editor to alert them in case they hadn’t heard the tragic news about Peter. Thankfully they caught it just before it went to print as it was scheduled to be on all Air Tran flight seat pockets May 1st. They rewrote the story and included the news about Peter. So if anyone flies Air Tran in May look for the story and save a copy for me if you could.

RIP Peter

Nikon D70 Digital SLR Camera with Nikon AF-S DX 18-70mm lens

Many photos that I have posted here on GMG have been shot with this camera. It was my constant companion for several years and gave me the ability to satisfy my need for instant gratification. In the process, I have become a better photographer because of it. I now have the D90, but the D70 is still being used regularly.

If you’ve been thinking about getting a DSLR, this would be a great way to get one for less money than a point and shoot. I can show you the basics, and when the GMG Photo Treks begin, you can join in the fun!

Here’s the camera (Photo taken with my phone).

I can sell the body alone ($300) or with the kit lens and other accessories for $100 more.

Here’s more info on the camera

Sent me an email below if you’re interested! I’m here in Gloucester, so if you’re local, we can meet up so you can see it in person.:)     ~Sharon

Thomas Huxley Quote of The Week From Greg Bover

“Perhaps the most valuable result of all education is the ability to make yourself do the thing you have to do, when it ought to be done, whether you like it or not.”

Thomas Huxley (1825-1895) Click the picture to go to the Thomas Huxley wiki page

A self-taught anatomist and comparative biologist, Huxley was ship’s surgeon on a very early voyage to New Guinea and Australia. He was a vociferous champion of Darwin and invented the word “agnostic” to describe his own thoughts about a supreme being. It was Huxley who first theorized that birds evolved from dinosaurs and who was the primary proponent of scientific education in 19th century Britain. A lifelong humanist and prolific essayist, Huxley’s grandsons include Sir Julian Huxley, first director of UNESCO, and Aldous Huxley, author of Doors of Perception and Brave New World.

Calling All Creative People!

Minimalist Motif in George Anderson's Gallery window on Main Street at last year's festival.

Jud Wilson's action figures Motif at The Ice Cream Store on Bearskin Neck at last year's festival.

One of the highlights of last year’s Motif No. 1 Day was the Find-the-Motif Scavenger Hunt, where mini-Motifs were placed throughout Rockport’s downtown for festival-goers to discover. There were Motifs made of driftwood, papier mâché, sleek steel, and an especially crazy-awesome one made by Jud of Ace Hardware using action figures attached to a plywood Motif (with lights! and sound!). The people who make Motif No. 1 Day happen are looking for more submissions for this year’s festival on May 21st. The general dimensions are 2′ x 3′ so that Scavenger Hunt participants can spot the mini-Motif easily, but if your creativity leads you to create a Motif that’s a bit smaller — or larger — it’s no problem at all. To join in the fun, e-mail rockportfestivals@gmail.com and let them know  you’ll be making a Motif for the Scavenger Hunt. Submissions are due by Thursday, May 19th, and participants are asked to pick up their mini-Motifs in Dock Square at the close of the festival (7 pm on Saturday, May 21st).  To get you in the spirit of things, here’s an image of a kit for a paper Motif No. 1, sold online by Fiddler’s Green. Yours doesn’t have to be this perfect of course. It doesn’t even have to be red — just vaguely recognizable as the (arguably) most famous fishing shack/art studio/storage building in the known universe.

Did You Know? (CAFM Fundraiser)

photos from cape ann farmers market fundraiser at cape ann community cinema
Photos by E.J. Lefavour

That last evening’s fundraiser for Cape Ann Farmers Market held at Cape Ann Community Cinema was alot of fun and a rousing success?  The event was very well attended and everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves while supporting a very good cause.  I had previously popped into the cinema to see it, but this was my first event there.  It is a wonderful, homey, comfortable, very cool cinema that Rob Newton has done an admirable job of creating for the community.  If you haven’t been, visit http://capeanncinema.com/ to see what he has coming up on the schedule, and subscribe to his email list (I just did).  We have so many great things happening on Cape Ann, that if we don’t remind ourselves, we miss them.  On that note, take out your cell phone right now and punch in 72727 and then CAFM, you will receive a text message reminder each Thursday that it is Farmers Market day, so you won’t forget.  In addition to the wonderful refreshment provided by Alchemy and Duckworth’s Bistro’s cauliflower and sweet potato and ginger soups, amazing cupcakes by The Cape Ann Cake Co., beer from Cape Ann Brewing Company, Alfalfa Farms & Still River Winery wines, wonderful bread by A&J King Artisan Bakers, awesome feta cheese by Valley View Farm and service with a smile provided by Latitude 43, we saw the entertaining, thought provoking and kind of scary film Fresh.  I’ve seen other similar sustainable food films, and they always remind me of how sick our country has become, and why – we are what we eat, and in the name of convenience, we are allowing ourselves to be force-fed highly processed, unnatural foods that are not what nature intended us to eat, and we are suffering the consequence.  However, we do have a choice, and buying fresh, nutritious, locally grown food at the Cape Ann Farmers Market is a good choice we can make for our families and ourselves.
