Did You Know? (The Fame of Epes Davis)

That this is grave of Rev. Epes Davis at Mount Adnah Cemetery in Annisquam?  Rev. Davis was a Free-Will Baptist who held services at his house until 1830 when he built a meeting-house, now known as the Annisquam Village Hall and still regularly used for community events and functions.

In addition to being a Baptist minister, Davis was also a shipbuilder in Annisquam, probably most known for building the original schooner Fame.  When the War of 1812 appeared imminent, privateers out of Salem purchased the fast little pinky schooner that had recently been built by Epes Davis in Annisquam. Fame could carry two small cannon and a crew of up to 30. Fame had originally been designed for fishing, so her new owners brought her to Salem and fitted her out to carry the armament and larger crew of a privateer.

The replica of Fame, which was built by Harold Burnham at Burnham Boat Yard in Essex and launched in 2003, first sailed to Gloucester, where her fitting-out continued, and then made her return to Salem on July 12th. On July 25, 2003, she carried passengers from Pickering Wharf for the first time.

Two legacies of the Rev. Epes Davis.

Dave Sag’s Blues Party @ The Rhumb Line to host Justin Quinn

Thursday – 9:00 to 12:00

Dave says,

We have the post Fat Tuesday post-partum blues this week as we welcome back Justin Quinn and his merry band of idiots to our stage. Justin is the meanest and heartiest practicioner of the Mississippi saxaphone (harmonica) that I’ve ever known. Every time his boys show up,  Fred needs an extra clean-up crew! We’ll be wailin’ thru the whole book of Chicago blues. He’s bringing along Mr. Jon Ross, vibrating gootarist to help us with our recovery. Mr. Andrew Jones will be filling those size14 drum duties. Of course, Mr. Greg T. and myself will be there, putting up the cracks.

And then there’s Saturday nite at the Annie. Yet another grueling evening cranking out swing and other sordid dance music with the Good Old Salty Jazz and Swing Band, featuring Mr. Henry Allen on vocals. We’ve done this a couple of times and we really had a ball, so you should get out and dance while your neuromotor system still works. Hours are 8 to 11. Admission is $20.www.HenryAllen.org www.TheAnnie.org www.TheCapeAnn.org

2 Crewman Rescued from the Plan B

1st Coast Guard District NewsBOSTON — The Coast Guard assisted two fishermen after their fishing vessel began to take on water nine miles east Kennebunkport, Maine, Tuesday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Northern New England received a call at 7:20 a.m. from the 81-foot fishing vessel Plan B reporting that they were taking on water and pumps were unable to keep up with the flooding. The men were donning survival suits.

The Coast Guard immediately launched an Air Station Cape Cod MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew, a Coast Guard Station Portsmouth Harbor, N.H., rescue boat crew, a Coast Guard Station South Portland, Maine, rescue boat crew, and diverted the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Tahoma. The Coast Guard also issued an urgent marine information broadcast asking boaters in the area to assist the fishermen.

The crew of the fishing vessel Cameran Lee responded to the UMIB and safely transferred the two fishermen from the Plan B to their vessel.

Weather on scene was 10 to 15-knot winds and two-foot seas.

The Tahoma and Station South Portland are currently on scene monitoring the situation.

“This rescue highlights the importance of communication in an already hazardous environment,” said Lt. Nick Barrow, command center supervisor at Sector Northern New England. “The value of good Samaritans in our tight-knit community is invaluable.”

The Coast Guard protects roughly 20,000 commercial fishing vessels in the northeastern U.S. and encourages fleets to prepare for the unexpected as the season continues.

The Plan B is still afloat and crews are arranging commercial salvage. There were no injuries or pollution reported.

Deb Clarke;

This is a painting that I started several years ago, and have not finished. The painting is in the attic. why did I stop working on it? I have misplaced the background fish that is the shadow wall for the verre eglomise.

someday I will finish this work. btw: some of the white areas is paint, other white areas is aluminum leaf, other white areas is where the light shows through from behind, other white areas is the surface light reflection.
