Edmund Burke Quote of The Week

December 20, 2012

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”

Attributed to Edmund Burke, (1729-1797)

image

Known as the Father of Conservatism, Burke, a native of Dublin and longtime Member of Parliament, was supportive of the American Revolution but condemned the French Revolution for its excesses. He wrote extensively on the role of government and was widely praised for his ability to clarify philosophical issues.

This quote, made popular by John Kennedy and attributed by him to Burke, is a good example of how difficult it can be to pin down exactly who said what several hundred years ago. According to The Quote Investigator, who often refers to The Quote Verifier by Ralph Keyes, it is likely that it may have been first pronounced in similar form by the Reverend Charles Aked, but is also attributed to Thomas Jefferson, John Stuart Mill and others. As with many of the quotable sentiments of the famous it has its roots in scripture, and expresses an ancient recognition that it is the duty of persons of good will to act, not merely to hope.

Hello Friends of Rocky Neck Art Colony!
We were so pleased to see this fabulous article in last week’s Cape Ann Beacon about the Cultural Center:

If everyone could send this to a few friends who might share the vision of what we are doing here on Rocky Neck, please have them contact one of us on the Capital Campaign Committee.  There are many ways to support the Cultural Center – our immediate goal is to secure its purchase on behalf of the community, and we need your help!
Seasons Greetings and best wishes from the

Help an Old Friend from Gloucester in Need this Christmas!

Myf Phillips, former long time resident of Gloucester (who lived 10 years on Rocky Neck and 6 in Lanesville), has arrived back on Cape Ann after living in NM for the past 15 years.  She packed up her car with a few belongings, her beloved dog and her 2 cats, left her long time relationship and headed back east – where she would be among good friends to support her during this difficult transition.  At the age of sixty-something, she’s finding it extremely hard to find an affordable apt. (temp or not) that will accept her and the animals.  She could pay rent up to about $850/month and has excellent local references.

She is currently living alone in a secluded, wood-heated cabin in northern New Hampshire (kindly rented to her by a Gloucester friend), but where she knows no one – lovely cabin but very isolated and remote in winter.

Please help this friend in need to find an affordable, pet-friendly apt. and bring her back to Gloucester for Christmas or soon thereafter!

I wish I could fly

I wish I could fly.  That’s the title of a gorgeous Christmas song by Fly Amero & Allen Estes (Fly gets top billing — it’s not called I wish I could Allen).

Fly Amero (L) with Allen Estes (R)

You can hear this song on Aurelia Nelson’s show Curtain Up on North Shore 104.9 FM Tomorrow (Sunday, Dec 23) at 9am.  You’ll also hear a beauty by Aaron Neville.  If you were lucky, you saw Aaron Neville at North Shore Music Theatre in August with Henri Smith opening.

And tonight you’ve got excellent live music choices in all four Cape Ann towns.  See the live music lineup here.
