Spirit of Massachusetts was launched on April 28, 1984 at the Charleston Navy Yard in Boston, Massachusetts. She is modeled after the 1889 fishing schooner Fredonia, designed by Edward Burgess. The Gloucester fishing schooners were widely known as "fast and able" vessels, and Fredonia was widely known for her speed. Spirit of Massachusetts proudly upholds that tradition to this day.

Spirit of Massachusetts was built by her original owners for service as a sail training vessel for young people. She also served as a good-will ambassador for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts from 1984 until 1987. Ocean Classroom Foundation began chartering Spirit for our own educational programs in 1997, and subsequently purchased her in 2000.

Harvey Gamage–High and Dry

The 131 foot, 95 ton schooner Harvey Gamage is in town for this weekend’s Schooner Festival. On Tuesday afternoon it was moved from its berth at the State Fish Pier to Rose’s Marine where it was positioned, secured and lifted on the yard’s drydock for bottom cleaning and maintenance. The operation took more than an hour and involved both mechanical and hydraulic devices as well as a good deal of plain old muscle power.

Harvey Gamage at Rose's Marine
It must be centered over the submerged cradle.
Fine tuning the schooner's position requires both muscle and finesse.
The main halyard is made fast to a cleat on the dock and used to straighten the ship.
Once the boat is in position, the dock is slowly raised.

Driving wedges to properly brace the schooner.

High and dry.

Schooner Harvey Gamage Arrives For Schooner Festival

This is one of the top three weekends to visit Gloucester IMO.   We usually have clear dry weather and the schooners are just gorgeous to go aboard.  If you haven’t already got tickets to go aboard the Thomas Lannon I’d call Kay in the office ADSAP and make arrangements.  Captain Tom will show you a great time and tell you all about the Schooners in port as you glide around Gloucester Harbor.  Check out The Thomas Lannon Website here for details on how to get tickets for a cruise.

Things To Do- Working Waterfront Walking Tour

Working Waterfront Walking Tour

Working Waterfront Walking Tour

Come join us for a walking tour of the Gloucester Working Harbor, starting at the Fisherman’s Statue and ending at the Fitz Henry Lane Park. We will be looking at old photographs and maps, taking us back to the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Old companies and buildings will be identified at their original locations as we make our way down the Boulevard and Rogers St.

Be prepared to go back in time to Gloucester’s fishing heyday.

Underway

After a Short Stay the  Harvey F. Gamage Leaves Gloucester.

It was hard to get Photos of the  Harvey F. Gamage Schooner from Land during it’s stay in Gloucester last week due to the location where it was tied up. I caught it as it was leaving the Inner Harbor and Headed for Portland, ME. The Schooners White Hull and everything around it Glowed in the Setting Sun. Unfortunatley the Sun hid behind some clouds before the Schooner made it to the Paint Factory. That would’ve been a great Photo.
