The Greasy Pole is back
Mural: The Blessing of the Fleet
What interests me most of this mural (in a stairwell at St. Ann’s Church) is not the currently-out-of-fashion but historically correct liturgical garb of the presiding prelate (although, as a priest, I find it interesting), but rather the skyline on the shore. I wonder exactly what view of Gloucester this is supposed to represent? It certainly doesn’t match the current skyline, but obviously things have changed over the decades. The other paintings show that the artist paid attention to detail, so I don’t think he just made it up.

Greasy Pole Reconstruction Photos From Betsy Goldman
Hi Joey,
I tagged along with Aaron, Tiger, and Chad for a few hours work on the Greasy Pole reconstruction a couple weekends back (Sunday, December 11th) and took some pictures.
It was a beautiful, crisp day in the harbor.
Enjoy!
Cheers, Betsy Goldman
Ginger Bread Greasy Pole at the Wenham Museum
Every year I think it is a must to check out the Gingerbread House display at the Wenham Museum. Folks continue to bring it to a new level. These are my 2 favorite; the Greasy Pole and the Clam Box.
These photos are from an iPod and uploaded via Instagr.am. It is becoming my new favorite social media app and great for sharing with friends to all social networks.

Kathy Chapman reports
Hi Joey,
Just came back from scouting out the GP situation…here’s what I know…
The pile-driving crew just drove in a test piling and located the anchor points before the wind picked up and they had to stop. The pilings will be driven into the mud 10 feet and pounded in another (roughly) 2 feet before it’s all said and done. Work will resume again on Black Friday, if there are calm winds. All work will be done at high tide in a four-hour window. They will drive in 6 poles and then make a platform that attaches at the top.

Greasy Pole Work Begins
Pearson Pilings are being used. The pearson pilings use a proprietary formula which makes their pilings stronger than steel even though it’s much lighter.

PEARSON FIBERGLASS COMPOSITE PILINGS are today’s preferred building material for waterfront foundations, docks, piers and bridges. Our composite pilings are stronger than wood, steel or concrete pilings, and because they will not rust, rot or crumble, they will last virtually forever. Containing no chemical preservatives that leach into the water, our sustainable fiberglass composite pilings are environmentally friendly and are the choice of “green” developers of clean marinas and waterfront properties.

Here’s the article in The Gloucester Daily Times-
Have you ever wanted to walk Gloucester’s famed Greasy Pole?
Come Nov. 12, you’ll have your chance.
Launching its fund-raising effort to restore the Greasy Pole and its pier — damaged during Tropical Storm Irene, then dumped onto its side by high winds and tides Sept. 30 — the St. Peter’s Fiesta Committee is offering 120 people the chance to walk the pole during a program planned that day for Gloucester High School’s Newell Stadium.
"Out of the whole Greasy Pole structure, we were able to save the actual walking pole," said St. Peter’s Fiesta Committee President Joe Novello, whose group is seeking to raise $85,000 to fully cover the construction, permit fees and other costs connected with restoring one of Fiesta’s centerpieces. The drive has already received a $35,000 lift from The Boston Foundation, Novello said.
In the Nov. 12 benefit, the pole and its flag will be extended from a flatbed truck some 3 to 4 feet off the ground, with rubber padding beneath it to cushion the inevitable falls. And the first 120 people who sign up and cough up the $25 donation will get to walk the pole, in three groups of 40, Novello said.

I saw it for the first time on a television yesterday at Cape Ann TV. The women couldn’t tear themselves away from the set.
The goal was to make a DVD which you could show people and blow them away with stuff that they have never seen before. Especially cool are the mutant lobster and marine life videos on the larger screen.
As a Christmas or Hanukah present it’s a no-brainer. Small size, easy wrapping, totally unique, totally Gloucester, easy shipping, perfect price point- $20.
This will be the perfect gift to have a couple wrapped and in the front hall closet for when those people stop buy with a present for you but you didn’t think to get them one- you have a couple Good Morning Gloucester DVDs all wrapped up in the closet and ready to go!
No brainer, right?
They will cost $20 for 1 Buy 5 and get 1 free, buy 10 and get two free.
I’ll put up a paypal link once I have them in my possession.
Huge thanks to Dan King for the background music for the DVD menu and The Joey C’s Gloucester at Dawn Slideshow, Adam Bolonsky and Sam Hartson’s Greasy Pole Footage and Beth Swan for Designing The DVD Artwork.
