Don Lodge -Lobstermen Truck Series

Notice Don has a spray in bed liner for his brand new Dodge. It is a $400 option and it is what we put on our trucks.

It isn’t the same type of spray in liner like the ones they used to put in trucks. the rhino spray in liners are more rubbery and tended to fade over time.

The newer spray in liners harden and won’t tear like the older rubbery ones.

Good Choice Don

Touch Tanks at Seapocket Lab GMHC

Here students and visitors can touch marine life and get interactive. It’s a great way to bring kids that don’t have any interaction with marine life into the fold.

There are many interesting activities for children and families at the GMHC.

My sister had her kids birthday party there a couple years ago and the kids had a great time.

The Maine Lobsterman-From The DC Traveler

In Washington DC there is a statue of a Maine Lobsterman.

From what Jon Rochetti writes, the statue was controversial for a couple of reasons.

One, it is a statue of a man pegging a lobster placed in the heart of crab country. Two the lobsterman is shown kneeling down to peg the lobster (in all my years at the dock, I’ve yet to witness this). Three, the lobsterman wasn’t weearing traditional Sou’wester oilskins which I guess bothered the Maine lobstermen it was supposed to represent.

It’s too bad that the artist who was commissioned to build the statue either didn’t consult with some actual lobstermen or didn’t listen to the ones he did talk too.

Here is the link to the story from The DC Traveler. Check out his site it’s a good read.

Make sure you turn them so they don’t burn.

Ingredients For The Worlds Greatest Lobster Roll

Has to be Cains mayo, and hot dog rolls so you can grill them to a golden brown with the salted butter.

Notice there is no lettuce, paprika, celery or any other filler. If anything else appears in your lobster roll, you have an inferior lobster roll.

steam the lobsters and shuck the meat

tear the meat into 1/2 inch chunks or so and mix with cains mayo

refrigerate

once lobster and mayo is chilled, butter each side of cheap hot dog rolls (the kind you tear apart)

you do not want to use any goddamn baguette or crusty overpowering roll

you want white bread tear apart soft hot dog rolls

once you butter the sides of the hot dog rolls with SALTED butter you pan brown the roll so its warm and golden brown

just barely browned but the roll should still be very soft

then load up your cool lobster/mayo filling into the warm soft buttery roll and you have yourself the perfect lobster roll

note- NO  LETTUCE- NO  CELERY-NO  PAPRIKA- NO FANCY CRUSTY FRENCH ROLL

Lobstermen Truck Series -George Hardy

Here is George Hardy and his GMC pick up.

George went the plywood bedliner route. Here he unloads traps from the truck to load onto the boat and later set.

It’s that time of year. Trap setting time!

Lobstermen Truck Series -Larry Tamillio

Here is Larry Tamillio with his Toyota 2×4. He skippers the Stardust.

Larry usually has this thing stuffed to the gills with some type of building material or scrap.

He fishes out of Beverly but brings his lobsters down here to Gloucester to sell to us. We’ve been doing business with Larry for a long long time and before that with his dad Chi Chi who passed away a couple of years ago.

Chi Chi used to play Santa in Beverly when Santa would arrive by boat to bring presents to the kids in Beverly at the Town dock there. Larry carries on the tradition now.

Two great guys that I feel lucky to do business with.

Larry’s Toyota lists a little to the left until he gets out of it, lol, but I bet the guys with the big oversized trucks would be jealous if they saw his fuel bill.

Lazy Daizy Progress Report

Still a mess.

I want more than anything for this guy to prove me wrong and this thing to work out for him. It would give me great pleasure to see this thing restored to beauty.

If it doesn’t happen it won’t be for a lack of trying.  The guy working on it has been there many hours on it, but it’s a huge task.

Good Luck.

George Hardy’s Buoys Ready to Go!

George has his buoys all painted up and ready to set!

Guys have been bailing gear out steadily over the past week. Now if only we could get a run of lobsters.

If I cropped the bottom of that photo off you would never know they aren’t in the water.

Mark Ring’s Truck -Lobstermans Truck Series

Mark Ring, Captain of The F/V Stanley Thomas’ truck.

Here is the second truck in my lobstermens truck series.

It belongs to Mark Ring. Mark opted for a fairly basic GMC truck without 4 wheel drive. Since he ties his boat up right down the street from his house, there isn’t anyplace critical that he needs to get in the snow so 2 wheel drive is a fine option for him.

Instead of a spray-in bed liner or drop-in plastic liner, Mark opted for a rubber mat which fits snugly along the contours of his truck bed and wheel wells.

There are pros and cons to each type of truck bed protection. The pros of a rubber mat is that it is very grippy. Things don’t tend to move around much. Rubber mats are also relatively cheap in comparison to a drop-in or spray-in liner. The cons are that they don’t protect up the inside walls of the truck bed.

Mark doesn’t need to lug much gear or bait around because he stores his traps right here at our dock and we provide the bait for him so most of his truck use is light duty compared to a lobsterman that chases bait around or store traps somewhere else.

Here he has a couple of coils of rope that he took the knots out of over the slow winter months in his workshop/garage.

Pamela and Patricia Rooster Video

So I’m grading out lobsters for a restaurant order and I hear cockadooodle dooo and then a pig snorting and then a frog ribbeting.  WTF is that I’m thinking.  I shoulda known.

It’s that crazy Shawn again. Click the picture to see the video.   Oy!

Brandy New Lobster Gear

This here is what a brand new lobster trap looks like fresh out of the trap company.

No seaweed or crap hanging off it, just clean as a whistle.

Not for long though.
