AWARD-WINNING OVERBOARD SINGERS IN GLOUCESTER HOLIDAY CONCERT DECEMBER 5

winter-banner Overboard

The award-winning Boston-based a cappella men’s singing group Overboard will be performing in Gloucester again  – this time a holiday concert with special guests on Sunday, Dec. 5, at 2 p.m., at the Meetinghouse in the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church on Middle Street.

Overboard was last on Cape Ann in July, when the six-member group, directed by Nick Girard, staged a five-part concert series at the Unitarian Universalist Church and built a local following.

“We are thrilled by the reception we got in Gloucester , and the wonderful acoustics in the UU church make our performances there even more exciting,” Girard said .

Formed in 2006 as a street performance group, Overboard quickly built its reputation in concert venues throughout New England and in five recorded albums. The group’s most recent album, Help!, was issued earlier this year with reinterpretations of over 40 Beatles songs and sounds and 23 original arrangements.

Help! has been nominated for two Contemporary A Cappella Award honors and for eight other A Cappella Community Awards.

Overboard’s holiday album Tidings was nominated for Best Album in last year’s Contemporary A Cappella Awards holiday album competition, and “We Three Kings,” a dance remix track on that album won top honors for Best Holiday Song.

Renowned among musicians and audiences for its acoustics, the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church, built in 1805, is recognized by the National Register of Historic Places and an iconic landmark on the city’s skyline. The church is at of Middle and Church Streets, one block off Gloucester ’s Main Street/West End shopping district.

Tickets for Overboard’s Dec. 5 Gloucester concert are $10 ($5 for students or seniors) and are available at the door.

Bradley Royds

You might not have heard of him yet, but you have probably heard him play. Bradley Royds is a performer, composer, producer and recording artist whose songs and sounds can be heard in television shows, commercials, video games, theater, and on the radio, Cds and the Internet.

____________________________________________________________________

Bradley’s musical career began in Houston Texas, where he picked up the guitar at age six and was playing professionally by the time he was ten. In his formative years, he taught himself to play multiple instruments, and developed a unique voice and an engaging stage presence. After earning a high-honors degree in political science from The London School of Economics and The University of Texas, he moved to Los Angeles where he dove in to the business of music as both performer and producer. He quickly landed gigs, including playing guitar with the likes of Boy George, working as a session musician, fronting his over-the-top rock band The High Court, and producing and recording bands and solo artists in his Hollywood Hills studio. Bradley earned a reputation and the moniker ‘The Acoustic Bomb’ for playing explosive solo shows. He also launched a successful career creating scores, songs and sounds for television, commercials, video games, film promo and theater. His hard hitting techno-rock project AndRoyd found huge success placing songs in some of the world’s biggest video games, collectively selling millions of copies.

A longtime summer resident of Cape Ann Massachusetts, Bradley prefers to spend time on the East Coast, playing live, writing, recording and producing a host of talented artists in his studio. In the world of theater he has participated as an actor, musician and sound designer. His recent portrayal of General Benjamin Butler in the play The Beauport Anthology has been described as a ‘knockout.’ He proved perfect for the part, playing guitar in the rock opera Tommy. Israel Horovitz once told Bradley that his sound design work is of ‘Broadway’ quality. As if that were not enough, Bradley is mixing live shows at the new Shalin Liu Hall in Rockport Ma, working with legendary rock, blues and folk artists including John Sebastian, Jonathan Edwards, Livingston Taylor, James Montgomery and Paula Cole, and world class jazz acts like Dave Brubeck, the Grace Kelly Quintet, Lavay Smith, Taylor Eigsti & Julian Lage and Kurt Elling.

Bradley is currently producing his own Cd and is looking forward to an early 2011 release &tour.

Joe and Renee
Renee Dupuis (voice, piano) and Joe Cardoza (voice, guitar) have been playing together for over ten years accumulating a vast repertoire of songs from the popular, rock, and folk traditions, as well as original music.
A graduate of the Hartt School, Renee sings everything from Weezer, to Etta James, Janis Joplin, and Led Zeppelin. You can most recently hear/see her playing the role of Alicia Keyes in comedian Juston McKinney’s (Comedy Central) parody of Jay Z’s “Empire State of Mind”

Berklee graduate Joe Cardoza plays electric and upright bass with many artists in the greater Boston area. He recently opened for Livingston Taylor at the brand new Shalin Liu Performance center in Rockport MA as bassist of the Jake Pardee Trio.

Together both Renee and Joe are a part of the alternative rock country band, The Bandit Kings (www.banditkings.com) who will be celebrating the release of their first full length album at TT The Bears in Cambridge and The Mint in Los Angeles.
“She is a strong, throaty alto with the voice of an earthy angel; he plays guitar with pure passion. The two together are like kids playing in a school playground, with ever so much spark and spontaneity; two swallows darting about together in mid-air, flying tandem with well-practiced precision and skill…Their voices and harmonies match up perfectly in jazz and the more popular songs of the Americana tradition…They leave a feeling of delightsomeness floating on the air.”

North Shore Jazz Project One Year Anniversary Party At Chianti

Caroline Forrester writes-

Good evening! I wanted to share with you a musical video from the North Shore Jazz Project as we celebrated our 1st anniversary at Chianti’s in Beverly.

Last Sunday, we had an anniversary show featuring Gid Loring, Dave Sag, Mark Earley (Roomful of Blues), Dave Mattacks, Frank Hadley, John Hicks. We had some incredible musicians sit in: including our youngest player Brian King, a 16 year old trumpet player who is a junior at Masconomet. He knocked everyone’s socks off.

Please take a moment to watch the above video that Henry Ferrini produced. It is only 7 minutes long- — and if you need to skip ahead- go to 5.23 to see Brian King. Gid Loring is 83 and so great to watch– to see him exchange notes with 16 yr old Brian- this IS what the North Shore Jazz Project is all about.

We are at www.northshorejazzproject.org with many events coming up. We have an educational clinic- free- at Chiantis in December. Danny Harrington- saxophonist extraordinaire, Berklee Professor and board member will be running that program.

We are so appreciative of any attention you can bring us as our mission is to bring musical education to the forefront and give musicians an environment where performance can flourish. In one year- we have had over 10 concerts- including Joe Lovano. I hope you can come and see for yourself how dedicated we are to keeping this American tradition alive.

Hoping all is well with you and wishing you a happy and thankful thanksgiving!

Cape Ann Symphony Holiday Pops Concerts Nov 27th and 28th

image

The Magic of the Holidays

Our traditional Thanksgiving weekend kick-off to the Holiday Season will be filled with musical cheer once again at the Cape Ann Symphony Pops concert. First off will be the performance of Mozart’s Magic Flute Overture. According to our conductor Yoichi, this is one of Mozart’s greatest and most loved overtures, filled with a tremendous amount of movement and energy. Next is Humperdink’s Hansel & Gretel Prelude, followed by Pierpont’s Tintinabulations and Bach’s Little Suite. The first half of the program will conclude with the ever popular Anderson’s Christmas Festival. Following the intermission, the Cape Ann Symphony Singers will join the orchestra. Directed by Wendy Betts, they now total nearly 70 members. They will join the Symphony with a selection of fine holiday choral pieces including a beautiful Hebrew arrangement by Nurit Hirsch titled Bashana Haba’na. The singers will conclude with Handel’s always uplifting Hallelujah Chorus from The Messiah. The concert will end with the traditional Christmas singalong. Come one, come all!
