Thursday Night Blues Party @ The Rhumb Line to host Evan Goodrow

Thursday -3/15/2012 – 9:00 to 12:00 ~ Dave Sag’s Blues Party

Dave says.

We have a white knuckle situation this Thursday as we drag in that maniacal mentor of the blues: Mr. Evan Goodreau. He’ll be tickling your earbone all night long with his belt-sanding glitar and smooth creamy vocals. clothing optional. Backing him up will be that Irish instigator of the drums: Mr. “Molto: Benny Benson. Of course, Greg T. and myself complete the roundup. We’re alpha and omega free. Bring your defibrillator!
And I’m gettin’ sick and tired of sayin’ it, but Sunday sees the triumphant return of the GEEZERZ up at Glenn’s in Nbpt. Boo-hoo…nobody from Globster ever shows up. So, screw it!
Also , Mon. afternoon at the Rose Baker Senior Center, the Old Saltys are at it again from 1 to 3. You should see these people dance. Put you to shame! It’s free, too. Smelling salts recommended.

History of Boru

King Brian Boru

The History of Boru

Brian mac Cennétig, called Brian Bóruma, Brian Boru, Emperor of the Irish (c. 941–23 April 1014), (English: Brian Boru, Irish: Brian Bóraimhe), was an Irish king who ended the centuries-long domination of the Kingship of Ireland by the Uí Néill.

Building on the achievements of his father, Cennétig mac Lorcain, and brother, Mathgamain, Brian first made himself King of Munster, then subjugated Leinster, making himself ruler of the south of Ireland.

O’brien’s Boru
March 17, 2011
St. Patty’s Day at The Rhumbline
Gloucester, MA. 01930

The day warmed up nicely. The sun shone bright and the snow, from the hardest winter in recent memory was almost gone. Spring seemed to be just around the corner.

By 4PM March 17, 2011, O’Brien’s Boru had arrived at the Rhumbline
to set up shop at this famous Gloucester, MA landmark.

The band’s first CD “O’Brien’s Boru” was heard on the sound system.
It was St Patrick’s Day and the band was performing their special brand of Irish music for the 20th year.
If you’ve never been to the Rhumbline on St Paddy’s Day you’ve missed a special celebration.

“Viva St Patrick” was the cry as a full house joined in the singing and dancing.
The aroma of corned beef and cabbage filled the air and the Guinness flowed freely.

Besides friends and fans from the Gloucester area, people from all over joined in the celebration.

From Tacoma, Washington to Portland, Maine, folks were in town for the show.
From Taiwan came a young lady who requested songs by the Saw Doctors.
From Scotland it was “Scottish Joe” who got up with the band to sing a rousing version of “The Wild Rover”.

The music began at 6PM and lasted until past midnight.
The band performed classic Irish songs from their first CD and added many more from their new CD (due out soon).

One of many highlights was the first live performance of an original song, written by the band, entitled “Hills Along The River Shannon.
As usual, the band finished up with a last set of songs by the Pogues, Drop Kick Murphy’s, Saw Doctors, Van Morrison and U2.

The band wants to thank all their friends who attended on the big day.

Why not check out the schedule and have a night out with the band? We’ll be expecting all you back, all you “Cailins” (girls) and “Garsuns” (boys)
to join us Saturday, March 17, 2012 for our very own
St Patrick’s Day celebration at the Rhumb Line.

That’s right, folks, gimmesound artist of the week Michael O’Leary will be at Logan Airport this week  serenading travelers to and from Ireland.  Watch the video to find out when.

Michael is one of the only musicians on Cape Ann who routinely performs with no mics, no amps, “nothing to plug in” — just you and his band in a venue with good acoustics.  In this video he describes the appeal of truly acoustic music — the way music was heard for thousands of years.

The Dog Bar reopened last night with more seating for music fans.  This rounds out Gloucester’s West End music scene giving us more music choices all week long.  See full music lineup here.

Dog Bar Re-Opens Tonight with Michael O’Leary

Michael O’Leary & Friends on Local Music Seen (see full show here)

OK, we’ve waited for weeks — now it’s happening.  Perfect day to get some sun and then head down to the Dog Bar for Michael O’Leary and friends at 5:30pm.

Watch the video, above, and see what you’re in for.  Since it St. Pat’s week, we thought you might be thinking about Irish music — ergo perfect time to point out just how good Michael and his band are ALL YEAR LONG!  He’s an excellent performer who captivates his audience in any venue so you feel like he’s right in your living room singing just for you.

Be prepared to stay out for a while tonight — lots going on.  See the full lineup here.

“I never knew the thief in me, ’till I took what was not mine”

Looks like Megan may already be a bit more edgy than she thinks.  Watch this video and see what we mean.  If you’re not quite sure what we’re talking about, watch yesterday’s video and all your questions will be answered by Megan’s very funny intro to her song Pay It Now.

Lots of music posters adorn Gloucester windows and websites and we think this is the best one we’ve seen in a while.

Bandit Kings are always fun and their sound is becoming known as the Gloucester sound.

No reason to stay home tonight with all the good live music about town from Celtic to Zydeco to good ol’ rock ‘n’ roll — see full lineup here.

What’s Edgy? Nose ring? Purple hair? Bangs? Electric?

gimmesound Artist of the week, Megan Burtt reveals her identity crisis and explores ways to be more edgy — and less folk — in her very funny intro to Pay It Now, the first song on her CD.

Then she plays the song with a sultry, edgy feel for an enthusiastic crowd at Sunday’s house concert.

After you watch the video, above, check out the edgy band version here.  Which do you like better?

A full weekend of music starts tonight with plenty of choices for early birds and night owls alike.  See lineup here.

A-Train Orchestra On iTunes!

If you’re a local to Gloucester and unless you’ve been living under a rock you’ve heard the fantastic A Train Orchestra at one of the many local events.  Well now’s your chance to get their music on iTunes-

Here they were on Rocky Neck-

Brute force string recovery @ Alchemy

Chelsea Berry broke two strings last night at Alchemy.  That’s unusual for her — she must have been excited by the packed house.

In this video, her good friend Megan Burtt’s brute force helps Chelsea recover and continue the song.

Also notice how they tease Andrew & Clayton.  A splendid time was had by all!

Lots to do tonight: folk, rock, blues, DJ Dancing and open mic.  See full lineup here.

“You think that it is a safe place to hide – But I’ve already been there”

Lyrics like that are why this song will be a HIT.  Then there’s the haunting melody, full of gorgeous melismas, sung perfectly by rising star Megan Burtt, who’s visiting her friend Chelsea Berry in Gloucester this week.

You can see the two of them at Alchemy tonight at 7pm.  Might be your last chance to catch this Denver native for a while, unless you want to follow her on tour — see dates here.

If you can’t get in to Alchemy, there’s other great music in town (see full lineup here).  And you late-nighters can see Dennis Monagle hosting The Dejas starting at 9pm at Minglewood.
