Music Around Town ~ August 10 – 12, 2012

Click photo for music info.

Music music everywhere, for the weekend alone…….Talk about makin your head spin.
Just about all of it is free too!

There’s a new poster coming to town today ~ and you’ll never guess who helped create it.

As many of you know, ORLEANS’ founding member, John Hall will re-join the band for their 40th Anniversary Tour — and their first east-coast concert is at North Shore Music Theatre on Fri, Aug 31 (get tickets here).

You probably also know that Gloucester’s extraordinarily talented musician, Fly Amero is a longtime member of ORLEANS, which means he’ll be with the band on Aug 31.

What you may not know is that Fly is also very talented with Photoshop — and he created a new photo for us to use for the top of the new poster, which will be showing up around town starting today.

Looking at the poster, you’ll also notice that award-winning Gloucester songwriter Allen Estes is opening.

And that 10% of profits will benefit summer camp programs at the YMCA of the North Shore (where 1 in 4 kids attend only because of your generosity).

This will be one of those shows that you talk about for years!

Allen will make a special appearance tonight at 6:30 to open the Harbor Loop concert with one of his signature songs about Gloucester as part of Harbor Walk Weekend, which starts NOW!

It’s such a great weekend that I can only think of one tiny bit of bad news: you just can’t see all the live music, so you’re gonna have to choose.

Here’s some help with that — get the full live music lineup here.

FREE Acoustic Music Festival in Rockport on Sunday

David Cutler, Rockport’s acoustic music impresario (yes, I used that word), has been putting together this event for 33 years! While it’s usually held in Rockport’s beautiful Millbrook Meadow, this year the event is being held at the Rockport Legion Band’s bandstand on Back Beach. This is a great time to hang out in lovely Rockport and hear some good local music while enjoying food from Claire Franklin of New Year’s Rockport Eve. For more on that, read on. And click HERE to head over to the Rockport Acoustic Music Festival to discover the lineup and other information.

Here’s a letter from Claire, who is coming off of a really tough year and is looking for volunteers for the weekend. Claire puts on a huge event, Rockport New Year’s Eve, every single year (this weekend’s food tent sales serve as a fundraiser for the New Year’s Eve event). It is a major effort and everyone loves this event, so if you can help her out that would be great. We’re going to be in Maine this weekend and will miss all the action, but I wish I could be there alongside Claire. Everyone at the Acoustic Music Festival is in happy mood, listening to music while eating Claire’s hot dogs, hamburgers and more, so working in the food booth is a great way to be part of the event. You can contact Claire at her email address: claire.nyre@comcast.net to sign up for a volunteer slot or contribute in some other way.

From Claire:

Hello Everyone,

As most of you know, I lost my husband to lung cancer last January right after New Year’s Eve.  It has been a long road back to once again try to do the things I always have done in the past without him along side me.  Starting with this coming weekend’s Rockport’s 33rd Annual Rockport Acoustic Music Festival.  Each summer New Year’s Rockport Eve supplies the Food Tent for the festival.  We are again this year!

New Year’s Rockport Eve is looking for volunteers to help serve & cook on Sunday, August 12th from noon to 6pm.  Also, I would love a few helpers to set up from 10am – 12 noon and clean up from 6 – 7 pm.  This event has moved from Millbrook Meadow to the Legion at Back Beach this year.

Every fundraiser that I put on throughout the year requires that I beg people to help me.  I love putting on the New Year’s Eve program for the town of Rockport, but the begging for help is getting a bit harder.  Please come forward to volunteer to benefit such a wonderful event that I would love to continue year after year.  It takes about $34,000.00 to put on this event and button sales does not support this.  Fund raising is a must!  If you can just do one hour, I will take it or two or three.  Just answer this email and volunteer and please pass this on to everyone on your email list.

I am always looking for Baked goods to sell, also.  Brownies, cookies etc. that can be bagged and sold for 50 cents.

Thanks,

Claire

Harbor Walk, Harbor Loop, Blues Fest, Farmers Market …

There’s just too much going on this week to fit into one post a day, so today we’re just going to step back, catch our breath and review what’s coming up.

Gus Foote Park Garden designed by Kim Smith ~ From Gloucester Daily Times ~ photo Allegra Boverman

Let’s start with music.  We’ve been adding new shows almost every day this week as we find out about them.  Remember, there’s even music at the Farmers Market.

Check the live music lineup to see the latest.  Check it again tomorrow; it’s likely to list more shows.

If you were paying attention, you’ve already saved the date for the Harbor Walk Ribbon Cutting.  Today’s excellent article in the Times gives you a first glimpse at what you can expect.

Later today, we’ll post a full schedule of Harbor Walk events that start Thursday, connect with the Harbor Loop Concerts and continue all weekend long.

Now, you DID take my advice yesterday and get your ticket to the Blues Festival, right?  Good, because we (including the Zip Line Kid) will be live blogging from the festival all day long — with a special focus on those of you who are like us and decide what to do at the last minute.

more to come later …

Alchemy of Art Opening – Wednesday August 8th 5:30-7:30

From Jim Clyde:
“When the immortal Scottish poet Robert Burns penned the words….”the best laid schemes o’ mice an’ men gang oft agley…” he must have had the plein air painter in mind.

Many times I have set up my easel in the brilliant sun of a mid-winter day only to find a short time later that the temperature has dropped 20 degrees and the wind has created a chill factor that renders one’s fingers inoperable.  Struggle on or pack it up?

Or the refulgent summer sky deteriorates into overcast and thunderstorms.  Not wishing to confirm Franklin’s theory of electricity, I fold up my easel and head home.

But there is nothing quite like painting outdoors, or “en plein air”.  Under the tutelage of Gloucester painter/teacher David Curtis, I have gained an appreciation of outdoor painting and the spontaneity that it necessarily generates.  By the way, you can always identify a painting that’s been done en plein air…. There are bugs and grass in the paint!”

Jim Clyde

Come join us to see Jim and his work this coming Wednesday evening to Alchemy’s brick room gallery from 5:30-7:30 PM.  And when you’re done taking in the view, if you’re still feeling frisky stick around for some live music by John Rockwell and some ladies night delights.  Music from 7-9.

Save $12 by getting your Blues Festival tickets before midnight tonight

“GMG readers deserve the best price available!”  That’s what Bob Hastings said in an email to me this morning.  And he’s right.  Click here to get your tickets for $28 on-line by midnight tonight or pay $40 (cash or check) at the gate on Saturday.

Gate opens at 9am on Saturday.

Weather looks good.

And so do Shemekia Copeland and Kenny Neal, two of the big stars you’ll see at the show.

You really don’t want to bemoan the fact that you missed Gloucester’s first-ever Blues Festival do you?

Be smart, click now and save 12 bucks.

Now, there’s no reason to wait until Saturday for great music.  In fact there’s even more music this week than there was last week — and last week may have been a record-breaking week of music on Cape Ann.  See this week’s full music lineup here.

Mile21,The Runaround, Allen Estes, Marina Evans and Charlie Bianchini all in one night at The Harbor Loop Concert~This Thursday August 9th.

Mile 21:

http://www.myspace.com/mile21music#{%22ImageId%22%3A17925499}

Formed in the fall of 2000, Mile 21 established itself as a seven piece
punk/ska band with influences of reggae and hip hop ranging from the
Mighty Mighty Bosstones to the Wu Tang Clan. After taking a hiatus from
shows in 2003 Mile 21 returned with a new sound that incorporated
catchy hornlines, melodic riffs and influencial lyrical patterns.

Over the years Mile 21 has been the featured band at several festivals
and shows in the NorthEast, playing at clubs and venues such as CBGB’s,
The Knitting Factory, The Empress Ballroon, The Middle East Club, The
Webster Theater, and Harper’s Ferry. Influenced by a uniquely wide
variety of artists, bands and styles, Mile 21 Band maintains a fresh,
self-owned sound. The list of those owed credit and notice are an
extensive group from Bob Marley & the Wailers to the Bosstones, John
Coltraine to Wu-Tang Clan, The Toasters to The Skatellites, and B.B.
King to Steel Pulse. Each of these as well as many more have offered
styles, sounds and inspiration for these 8 players to put every ounce
of energy and heart into the success of Mile 21 Band.

After a few EPs and Demos Mile 21 has released a new 3-song Demo that
truly captures their ska/roots/reggae styles. This new music expresses
their desire to release socially conscious music while maintaining a
very pop element that appeals to a wide range of people. Since their
release of Nine Ivy Days in 2005 Mile 21 Band has opened for such acts
as The Toasters, The Planet Smashers, Toots and the Maytals, Sean Paul,
Badfish, and Morgan Heritage. Mile 21 Band released its first
self-titled album under Megalith Records in 2007 and is currently
working on a new release that captures the influence and growth of
their 2010 hiatus. The band’s 2012 return welcomes the 2007 lineup
which includes Carlos Menezes Jr. on Trombone, Mike Francis on lead
vocals/guitar, Keith Amero on bass, Steve Russo on Drums, Mike Lentini
on saxophone, Mike Goulart on lead guitar, Julian O’Brien on keys, and
Shawn Lowe on Trumpet.

soul! The group features Carlos Menezes Jr on lead vocals and horns,
Steve Russo on vocals and drums, Nick Capello on saxophone, Christian
Towler on Guitar, Tim Klopotoski on vocals and keys, and Bill Spencer
on vocals and bass. The band’s repertoire is quite expansive, ranging

Joey may wanna kill me, but . . .

I have to say that, certainly from musical perspective, today’s Festival By The Sea in Manchester is the place to be.  [just a little back-peddling, here] Now that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go to the Sidewalk Bazaar in the morning.  And if you’ve taken my advice (given here) you went on Thursday too.  But I gotta hand it to Festival By The Sea Music Director Chris Langathianos.  He put together a DYNAMITE LINEUP headlined by one of my favorite artists: Chelsea Berry with her HOT new band!  Just in case you missed them at North Shore Music Theatre, watch the video below and then tell me you’d rather be anywhere other than Masconomo Park at 6 tonight — REALLY?

And for later tonight you’ve got another 15 artists and Cape Ann venues to choose from.  WOW! See the full live music lineup here.

Where will you be next Thursday (8/9) at 1pm?

St. Peter’s Square would be the right answer … so you can join Mayor Kirk, the Lt. Governor for the Harbor Walk Ribbon Cutting and a special walk led by the Mayor.

This isn’t your usual boring ribbon cutting event, folks.  It’s the kick off to an extraordinary weekend, culminating in Gloucester’s first Blues Festival and highlighting everything Gloucester has to offer from our proud fishing heritage and continuous working waterfront to art, music, food, literature, heroism and the spectacular natural beauty that inspires every one of us.

Much of this is embodied in the Story Moments on granite posts along the harbor walk, supported by an excellent website and phone apps built by Mike Ciolino (see notice of the website launch here).

And that website features a WALKING CINEMA starring one of Gloucester’s best singers: Ann Marie of the Bandit Kings, Safety (and who backed up Chelsea Berry at North Shore Music Theatre on June 28).

See Ann Marie in the Walking Cinema intro below:

I can’t even begin to list all the music THIS WEEKEND — it’s going on RIGHT NOW at the Sitewalk Bazaar.  Just check out the full live music schedule here.

BREAKING NEWS: Fly Amero’s touring band, Orleans, welcomes co-founder/songwriter/guitarist John Hall for a 40th Anniversary Concert in honor of Larry Hoppen at NORTH SHORE MUSIC THEATRE ON AUGUST 31

You saw it on GMG FIRST.  Just like you heard about the sudden, tragic death of Fly’s longtime friend and band-mate Larry Hoppen last week (see post here).

The next day, Fly demonstrated the healing power of music (see that story here) and on August 31, the healing continues as the show goes on (see details here).

All of us who know Fly are celebrating the band’s commitment to music in honor of their friend and brother by inviting John Hall, who wrote the multi-platinum #1 hits Dance With Me and Still the One to join them for this very special 40th anniversary concert (get tickets here).  Here’s a video of John making a special appearance with the band last year.

Now I hope you’re reading this on your phone because that means you’ve taken the day off and are out at the Sidewalk Bazaar and planning to visit the Farmers Market and take in some music this evening.  See today’s AMAZING live music lineup here.

(There may even be tickets left to see Fly and Allen Estes on The Lannon at 6:30 — and, finally, the weather looks good.  Call 978-281-6634 to find out).
