Latitude 43 and Minglewood tavern will be closed Saturday November 3rd at 5:00pm for a private function that requires the entire restaurant (huge function!) and re-opening Sunday afternoon at 11:30. Sorry for theĀ inconvenience,Ā ya’ll.
Now for tonight, there’s a special treat at Minglewood: Tony & Samantha Goddess will share the stage with KBMG. Ā You don’t get to see all these talented artists sharing the stage very often so take advantage.
This concert features recent Berklee alumni from Boston and Gloucester sharing the stage to help send a Gloucester student to Berklee (more about the Scholarship Fund). Ā When you think of Berklee College of Music, you might think Jazz only, but Berklee is all about contemporary music, which was Jazz when Berklee was founded in 1945, and now includes Ā genres that didn’t even exist then. Ā Check out this from Ā Berklee’s About page:
Berklee College of Music was founded on the revolutionary principle that the best way to prepare students for careers in music is through the study and practice of contemporary music. For more than half a century, the college has evolved to reflect the state of the art of music and the music business, leading the way with the worldās first baccalaureate studies in jazz, rock, electric guitar, film scoring, songwriting, turntables, electronic production, and more than a dozen other genres and fields of study.Ā
Simply put, if you want to study contemporary music — from Jazz to whatever genre becomes the next big thing — and you can get in to Berklee (not so easy) that’s where you want to be. Ā So, save the date Thursday, November 29 and come to Latitude 43 to hear some of the best Indie Rock on the planet — and, who knows, you may be helping to send the next big rock star to Berklee.
Remember, it’s an all ages show, so you can bring your kids and introduce them to the latest generation of Berklee rock stars.

There simply isn’t a better way to celebrate Veterans Day than to support the people who serve in the military and the memorials we build to those who “gave the last full measure of devotion”. Ā Lily Linquata sent this notice about the event that is from 3-6pm next Sunday. Ā If you’ve never seen the Cape Ann Big Band live, this is your perfect opportunity!
Join Gloucester’s WWII Veterans Memorial Committee and friends on this upcoming Veteran’s Day — Sunday, November 11, 2012 — for a Cape Ann Big Band concert to benefit the perpetual care of Gloucesterās WWII Memorial on Kent Circle. Starting at 3pm and going until 6pm, tickets are $20 each. Tickets are on sale now at The Gloucester House or via Connie Condon.
Cape Ann Big Band frequently sells out so donāt wait too long to get your tickets for this sure-to-be excellent event. As there will be no reserved seats, it is also important to be on time. Doors will open at 2:45.

The Old Sloop CoffeehouseĀ is known for bringing rising stars to Cape Ann — a risky business since rising stars, by their very nature (i.e., still rising) don’t have the draw of a more established artist. Ā Even falling stars draw better because people know them, and their names ring a familiar, sometimes nostalgic bell. Ā But that doesn’t stop the Old SloopĀ from booking rising stars and taking the risk. Ā And all of us benefit.
Every month, you can be sure that even though you may never have heard the names of the artists, just the fact that their playing the Old Sloop means they’re top talent. Ā These people do their homework.
It will be a long time before you can see Amy Black andĀ Megan BurttĀ on the same stage again so close to home. Ā And when you do, it just might be in a big theatre with expensive tickets — not a cozy, intimate setting in our own backyard. Ā So as the song says, “get it while you can!”

This Thursday will be a greatĀ niteĀ of rock ‘n roll and algorithm and blues since we have two titanic glitaristsĀ of the Boston scene on board.Ā I’m talking Mr. Steevie Sadler and Mr. Jimmie Scoppa. Steevie, our commodious multiincrementalist and stellar vocalist, is one of our most popular care-actors of all time. And Jimmy is no slouch, either, having played for years with T.H.and the Wreckage, one of the finest roots bands that ever came out ofĀ Boston. You’ll be smelling VitalisĀ® and yelling “uncle”!
Last Thursday saw Ms. Mari Martin wreck the joint, so, to keep up the momentum, she’s gonna join me up at Glenn’s in Nbpt. for another great nite. That’s this Sunday nite from 6 to 9. Glenn’s is great restaurant and fabulous venue to hear music, so, get your butt over the bridge and join us for some fun!

One of my favorite singer-songwriters, Inge Berge, will be Fly’s guest tomorrow (Wed) at Rhumb Line. Ā Inge can be bitter, touching, poignant,Ā hopefulĀ — holding nothing back, always wry — his music expresses his feelings (and ours) beautifully and artfully. Ā It stays with you (you’ll be humming it the next morning). Ā Here are some examples:
Colorado native Megan Burtt returns to Cape Ann to perform with Boston-based Amy Black at the Old Sloop Coffeehouse next Saturday, November 3. Ā I could tell you how good they are, but I’ll let the videos speak for themselves.
As you’ll see in this video I shot last year when Megan performed with Chelsea Berry, her stories are as entertaining as her songs — and this song will send chills up your spine!
Now that we’re starting the weekend on Thursdays (that’s tonight, folks) we might as well start Halloween this Friday (before the hurricane hits) and guess who stepped up to help us do just that: Gloucester’s favorite 80’s band, SAFETY. Ā Catch them on Mile Marker One’s heated deck, Friday at 7pm, costumes, prizes, etc. http://vimeo.com/4332773
Saturday’s seARTS benefit featuringĀ Cape Ann Big Band with theĀ Beverly High School Jazz Sextet at Bass Rocks Golf Club is sold out, but you can still get on the waiting list if youĀ click here.
And there’s lots more happening all weekend long, so get out before the storm hits. Ā Check the complete live music listings here.

The on-line system that sells advanced ticketsĀ and takes credit cards will be turned off at noon on tomorrow (Thursday). Ā Just because it’s a benefit doesn’t mean you have to pay full price. Ā SoĀ click hereĀ and get cheaper tickets now. Ā Or just show up at the Gloucester House and pay $15 cash at the door. Ā Either way, you won’t want to miss this concert. Ā You’ll be among the first to hear some of Jim Odgren‘s newest music. Ā Here’s what said in a recent email, The band is sounding terrific. Lots of songs from “Day Dreaming” as well as our cd that is as yet unreleased. And some additional songs in the same genre.

While Vickie was complaining yesterday about people who wait until the last minute to announce their live music lineup, and then forget to tell us at gimmesound.com, which, BTW, is the ONLY complete live music listing for Gloucester & Cape Ann in ANY MEDIUM — meaning that if you’re not listed, you’re not getting the word out, which it’s your own fault ’cause it’s free … anyhow I digress.
While she was getting gimmesound up to date, I was at a meeting with Peter Jenner, who happens to be Chair of the School of Hospitality Management at Endicott College, and he invited me to a reception at their new digs at 33 Commercial St. later in the day where Endicott’s arts profs & deans were going toĀ hobnobĀ with people from Gloucester’s arts scene, the whole shebang being dubbed ArtsĀ Endicott meets Arts GloucesterĀ — in a word: OUTREACH.
While I was there, I posted a live photo from the event (see here). Ā I met some interesting people, saw people I knew, drank wine, ate hors d’oeuvres, listened to a short, concise and interesting presentation and saw a dance performance — all very well put together. Ā But here’s what really struck me. Ā These people are truly interested inĀ immersing themselves into Gloucester’s culture. Ā They see the entire city — and everyone in it — as their partners. Ā This is far more significant than the fact Endicott is offering degree programs in Gloucester (see this post), which is pretty big in and of itself.
So if you didn’t go last night (I almost didn’t) I recommend that you contact somebody at Endicott that is teaching in the field you work in every day and tell them what you do. Ā This isn’t only for people in the arts — it’s everything — literally. Ā Check out their website here.
As I said in this post, “Becoming a college town is likely toĀ beĀ the best thing that has happened to Gloucester this century.” Ā And I’m not exaggerating.

Just so you know, Peter wants no part of this post. Ā So guess who’s writing today. Ā I don’t mean to bitch, but you people who leave everything to the last minute make my job harder. Ā Today, I found a number of live shows that hadn’t been listed on gimmesound (because you didn’t tell us about them) so I put them in. Ā See the updated live music listings here. Ā If you’re a musician or a music venue, you get a free listing on gimmesound.com and you can update it yourself. Ā It’s easy. Ā I’m happy to give you a private lesson on how to keep your shows updated if you want. Ā Or if you don’t even want to learn how, just send me your shows — either way, send an email to live@gimmesound.com.
For all of youĀ who slept late or enjoyed the sun on Sunday and missed Aurelia Nelson’s interview with Peter talking about Berklee in GloucesterĀ on her 104.9fm show, Curtain up, you can hear it here:

Dave says, I’ve got a treat for ya this week. A new singer (for me anyway) in the form of a classical sireeen. I’m talking’ bout Ms. Mari Martin. Not to be confused with she who’s gonna wash that man right outa her hair. Or some androgynous weenie flying around in a green suit. This is the real deal. She is truly a vocal blunderbuss and will knock you out. This gal was rescued from a life of gargling with razor blades in a piano bar by none other than Marque Earley, who promptly sent her to me. Let’s see what we can do. In keeping with this program I have assembled a tight crackpot unit to back her up. We have Marque Earley on tenor and baritone kazoo and saxophone, Mr. Jon Cameron, on his organ again, Mr. Bob Enik, the spackler, on guitar, who knows how to fill in the cracks, and me, on base bringing up the rear. We’re all really looking forward to this and hope you’ll all come out and cheer for the local girl! We’re nothing without you! Ā Ā Ā Ā

Special Guest:Ā ROCKY KRAMM! It may sound like an uncomfortable suggestion from an arch

I love being right (just like Paul F.) Ā I predicted Gloucester’s music scene would benefit as a result of The Noise Magazine publisher/editor, T Max, moving here. Ā Check this out:Ā The Noise Live Show Picks for this week include not one, but two Gloucester shows, putting us on par with Cambridge for the week’s picks.
So I figured you might enjoy a video series I published in February where T Max walks Gloucester’s music scene, visiting many of our excellent music venues, plus you’ll see chance encounters with some of Gloucester’s finest characters. Ā Here’s the first one:
Boston Globe correspondent, Wendy Killeen, lists Berklee in Gloucester in her weekly Arts/Entertainment column that appeared in the Globe North today. Ā Excerpt below:
JAZZ ON TAP:Ā Berklee in GloucesterĀ launches its season with a performance by The Jim Odgren QuintetĀ at The Gloucester HouseĀ on Thursday.
The series of concerts features professors from the Berklee College of MusicĀ in Boston and some of their top students. Proceeds benefit the Gloucester2Berklee Scholarship Fund,Ā which helps send students from the city to the music college.
āGiven all the Berklee students and alumni who live here, we feel that Berklee is somewhat responsible for Gloucesterās burgeoning music scene,ā saidĀ Peter Van NessĀ of gimmeLIVE,Ā producer of this seasonās Berklee in Gloucester shows. āNormally, youād only expect to see these concerts in a big city. You get to catch the best players in the world today as they train the best players of tomorrow.ā
The jazz quintet is led by Berklee professorsĀ Jim OdgrenĀ on alto saxophone andĀ Dave SantoroĀ on acoustic bass. They are joined by Berklee student musiciansĀ Roberto GiaquintoĀ on drums,Ā Davis WhitfieldĀ on piano, andĀ Lucian GrayĀ on guitar.
The performance begins at 7:30 p.m.Ā Tickets are $10Ā in advance; $15Ā (cash only) at the door. Call 978-525-9093Ā or visit gimmesound.com.Ā
In case you missed this post, Next Thursday (10/25) is the 2012-13 Berklee in Gloucester season kickoff at The Gloucester House featuring the Jim Odgren Quintet, who are helping raise money to send a Gloucester student to Berklee.Ā You may remember that this is the brainchild of Berklee’s Dean of Performance, Matt Marvuglio. Ā Now, when you read the word Dean, what do envision? Ā Bet it’s not the guy playing the flute solo at about 2 minutes into this video (Jim Odgren is on alto sax in this video too).
Here’s another video of Matt at The Gloucester House on March 30 with Berklee professor Ed Saindon on vibes and studentsĀ Nori Shiota on bass and Jazz Robertson on drums.
Matt told me he’s planning to come to the concert on Thursday. Ā Perhaps we can convince him to sit in.
How cool is it that you can see the top professors, students — even the dean — of the best music school in the world right here in your own backyard! Ā Well, Aurelia Nelson, host of the show Curtain Up on North Shore 104.9 thinks it’s pretty cool, so she asked me to join her for tomorrow’s show to talk a little about it. Ā So tune in to 104.9FM tomorrow at 9AM.
But before all that, you’ve got 13 venues with live music to choose from tonight — perfect number for a beautiful October Saturday! Ā See the complete live music listing here.
