Block Party Moon

How many Block Party participants noticed the beautiful, nearly full moon?  As wispy clouds passed across the sky, they made the face of the moon seem to be changing constantly.

Sail GHS Summer Sailing Clinics

Hi Joey,

I’m sure you have seen the kids on the Sail GHS Team out in the harbor having a great time racing in all weather throughout the year.  During the summer months, they are offering Summer Sailing Clinics in their

new, C 420 sailboats and even in their newly acquired LaserLevel II Sailing Coach, Guy Fiero is at the helm and with assistance from his very, dedicated team of volunteers.  This is the biggest bargain for sailing on Cape Ann at  ONLY $85 per week, Monday through Friday 8 – 11:30am.  Five days a week and still time in the afternoon to hit the beach!  Kids with some sailing experience ages 10 and up are welcome.  Classes meet at Gloucester Maritime Heritage Center and there is no need to pre-register!  Just bring yourself, your friends, and your life jackets if you have them.  Sailors should arrive promptly at 8:00 am as space is limited.  Discounts available.

All proceeds from this ongoing fundraiser go to Sail GHS, a non-profit organization to help defray operating costs and provide the youth of Cape Ann and beyond with this wonderful sailing opportunity!

Please contact sailghs@yahoo.com or Guy Fiero at 978-290-7894 with any questions.

Thanks so much for sharing!

Video: Dave Sag on Local Music Seen with Allen Estes this week — special guest Will Hunt

Dave Sag is on a roll.  One way to gauge the quality of a musician is by the guests who perform with him and it just seems like some of the best musicians in the area are showing up as Dave Sag’s guests lately (see list here).  So we figured it was time to reprise the Local Music Seen show we premiered a couple of years ago featuring Dave Sag.  The show will air tonight at 6:30 on Cape Ann TV Channel 12, and on Friday at 1:30pm and Sunday at 6pm.

In addition to being a talented, versatile musician, Dave Sag is an entertaining story teller and his stories shine in this show, as you can tell from this clip, where Dave asks our sound guy, Will Hunt (who did a did an excellent job programming the Block Party music and managing sound on all 3 stages this past Saturday) to join him on Sax — and Will, who’s equally versatile and always a good sport, agrees.  Check out the dynamic, on-stage spontaneity in this number:

Just in case you don’t live in Gloucester and can’t get Channel 12, you can watch the entire show on-line now thanks to Cape Ann TV’s new technology!  Click here to watch the show.

Gloucester Block Party Sideshow Performer

At the block party, I caught part of a sideshow provided by Alex Becket of Dr. Bones’ Circus of Marvels. He started by tapping a large nail into his nose with a hammer.

Here is is showing us the (nice and long) nail:

Tapping it in:

Pulling it back out with pliers:

Yikes! Then he slammed a full can of tomatoes on his finger, resulting in a bent can and an unbroken finger (here’s a “before” shot):

It worked!  Alex is just one of the performers in Dr. Bones’ Circus of Marvels, but I unfortunately missed the rest.

OK, We’ve Finally Narrowed Down Our Premium Ladies Super Soft Lightweight Feminine Cut T Shirts

I owe the idea to FOB Linda Colman who has been begging for years relentlessly for us to bring out a feminine cut V Neck super soft T Shirt.

After months of research and trying many many brands we’ve got it narrowed down and we’re going to offer them in V as well as scoop neck styles- both feminine cut, both crazyyyy soft- like you wanna wear it to bed but then never take it off soft.  Like I guarantee it’s gonna be your favorite t shirt soft.

GMG Logo over the left boob.

The scoop neck ones fit true to size but the V Neck ones you need to order a size up (Felicia describes it best in the video)

I just need help deciding the colors

I’m definitely ordering Black and the Dark Gray.  But I just need help determining the third color.  Once we narrow down the colors to offer I’ll put them on the All Things Gloucester Site for sale- http://gmg.storenvy.com/

I’m taking specific color size combinations in the Dry Fit shirts through Thursday and then whatever the orders are will be what I order from the distributor for the first printing.  After that there won’t be any guarantees for stock in certain color/size combinations. it’ll be what is listed on the site for availability is what there will be after that.

The white has been a popular color.

So we’ll poll it to see what you guys think.  (Linda Colman gets five votes based on how many times she begged me to carry these)

The Compass Rose

Went back to Maritime Gloucester and took some photos of the progress. Watching the workers you can see how painstaking labor of love. More photos will come.

Silver-spotted Skipper

Although there appear to be far fewer Lepidoptera on the wing this year, as compared to last year’s extraordinary numbers, one frequent visitor to gardens this summer is the Silver-spotted Skipper (Epargyreus clarus). Like butterflies and moths, skippers are members of the Order Lepidoptera and, like all Lepidoptera, they are distinguished from other insects by their scaled wings.

Skippers are characterized by, and named by, a darting (skipping) flight pattern. Skippers are also easy to identify from butterflies and moths by their antennae clubs that hook backward, like to a crochet hook.

The Silver-spotted Skipper caterpillars feed on members of the legume family, including Black Locust, Honey Locust, Hog Peanut, ticktrefoils (Desmodium) and False Indigo (Amorpha fruticosa)

Notice the white sploges on the skipper’s under wing. The sploges resemble bird poop and are thought to be an evolutionary defense against predatory birds.

Origami for kids at Art Haven and Theatre Camp for Kids at the YMCA

This Thursday (3:30-5PM) is the last origami class for kids this month at Art Haven!  The content and level of difficulty of the class is entirely flexible according to the needs and interests of those who sign up.

So, for example, if your child (or a child you know) has an origami book and has stopped using it because he/she is stuck on a difficult model or discouraged, register them for the class and bring them with the book in question! I will help them through whatever difficulty they may be facing, and we can fold some model(s) from the book with the other students.

The possibilities are endless! Contact Art Haven for details on pricing and registration, and if you do register and have a specific interest or need, let me know ahead of time so I can prepare if necessary (you can comment on this post).  Here’s a photo from a previous class, showing me with budding origami artist Leon Calvo:

origami class photo

We folded a boat, a dragon, a lotus flower, and a Brontosaurus (aka Apatosaurus). Leon’s father David Calvo is a wood carver who does beautiful work and teaches classes as well.

It’s not too late to sign kids up for Theatre Camp at the YMCA! I’ve heard great things about this program. “Murder on Rocky Neck: The Opera” was the result of a similar program with Henry Allen in the past.1077257_395860890520460_1502729790_oMatthew Green

Thank you Mayor Kirk, Carol, Catherine, and the Gloucester Committee for the Arts for the exhibit, which is interesting and very informative to see all the semi-finalists responses to the public call to art. If You Are Waiting To The Last Minute… IT’S HERE!

IMG_0719It is so amazing (and a little overwhelming) to see this two-month capital campaign coming to such a positive end. Thanks to the support of our hundreds of our dedicated “Patron Saints,” we have raised $28,727 for our crowdfunding campaign via the online platform Indiegogo. As of today, counting all the offline pledges,we are now over 95% of the way to our goal of $30,000. We have just 1 day left until this campaign is history.

Please visit our Indiegogo page for the specifics as to how we will invest the money we raise through this campaign, as well as a list of 12 keen thank-you gifts (which range from bumper stickers to a private movie party to free admission for a year).

If you have not donated yet and would like to––or if you’d like to donate again––just click on the picture of the door above.

I’m so lucky to be able to do what I love to do, and grateful that I will be able to continue to serve this community I love so much.

See you soon,

Help Ned & the Big Babies Make a CD

Did you see Ned & the Big Babies at Dog Bar during the Block Party?  Wow!  Tight, crisp, rockin’ sound; you just can’t help but move around!  These guys are one of the most entertaining bands in Gloucester.  And the best thing is that you could hear them all the way up on Main Street.  I saw people dancing their way down to Dog Bar’s gorgeous outdoor dining spot on their Rogers St. side because you couldn’t just walk, you had to dance.  Thankfully, nobody took any photos of me dancing down there (at least none that I know of).

Imagine what kind of party you could throw with a whole CD of new Ned & the Big Babies songs.  Now click here and help make that happen!  Not so sure?  Watch the video:

The Neighborhood Apothecary

A nice surprise for me at the block party for me was the new “Neighborhood Apothecary“.  I arrived on the scene from the west end near Giuseppe’s, and met this fine fellow:

_Brentwho was handing out coupons for a free sample from the Neighborhood Apothecary, a new store on the 4th floor of the Blackburn Building (2 Main St.)!  They sell organic herbs, seasonings and teas, natural body products, stones, cards, books, and soon also some natural herbal remedies.   (Regular hours: 8am – 6pm, Monday – Sunday.)  The biggest draw for me is probably the herbal teas!  Loose herbal tea can be hard to find locally outside of chains like Teavana, so it’s nice to have something local in walking distance of my apartment.

The entrance is not immediately evident. You have to go through the parking lot next to Giuseppe’s:

_2 Finding the door 1towards that door in the back with the Grecian columns (Ionic columns with Scamozzi capitals, to be specific):

_3 Finding the door 2Then take the elevator to the 4th floor and follow the signs! You will probably end up meeting Meghan Owens, the owner (shown here helping some customers):

_4 Meghan Owens with customersAnd here are a few photos of what you can find in the store, from herbs and spices to earth-friendly cards and soy candles:

They have a weekly raffle for a discount coupon, which I entered and – to my surprise – won! I get a 5% discount on my next purchase!

July Block Party

Although I wished I could have stayed longer, the brief hour that I was there at the Block Party last night was so much fun. A cooling and most welcome breeze arrived just as the party began and everyone was there to have a fabulous time. Many thanks to the “Block Heads” who bring us this wonderful event–times 3! Don’t miss the next two upcoming Block Parties, August 17th and September 21st.
