2013 Gloucester MA Lobster Trap Tree Being Built

Bex submits-

All the traps are on loan from local lobstermen.

Volunteers dedicate a weekend to building the tree.

Children paint buoys as “ornaments” to decorate the tree. Buoy Painting is December 14 and the Tree Lighting Ceremony is 4:30 – 5:00 on December 14.

When the tree comes down in January, the buoys are saved and auctioned off as a fundraiser for Cape Ann Art Haven on January 24th @ Gloucester Cruiseport.

Thank you to Awesome Gloucester for awarding Cape Ann Art Haven $1000 towards the Lobster Trap Tree and Buoy Painting Week!

When it comes to local entertainment the days of procrastination are over

I love to procrastinate.  One of my Grandfather’s favorite sayings (he had lots of them) is “Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow, ’cause you might not have to do it.”

It used to be that if you wanted to see live music in Gloucester and Cape Ann, you could decide at the last minute, stroll down to the venue just before showtime, get your tickets at the door, mosey on in and find a good seat.

Those days are gone.  Oops, did you want to see Chelsea Berry & Friends at Crowell Chapel on Dec 7 or Cape Ann Big Band’s Shalin Liu matinee on Dec 8?  Too bad.  They’re sold out.  The good news is that Chelsea & Friends added a new show on Dec 8 and there are still a few tickets for Cape Ann Big Band at 7pm.

But if you wanted to see Overboard on Nov 30 at Old Sloop, you’re just plain outa luck. They’re completely sold out.  So are a number of other local shows between now and Christmas.

More good news : we added a Sunday Matinee on Dec 15 for our Henri Smith Christmas show at The Larcom Theatre in Beverly, so you can still get good seats.  And there are still a few seats left to some of the Shalin Liu shows we told you about in this post.  But these won’t last long, so don’t think you’ve got much time to decide.

I think we can probably all agree that having a thriving music scene in Gloucester and Cape Ann is a good thing for all of us — even if it means we miss a few shows because we don’t pay attention to posts like this one that tell us to save the date.

I took a little break from work this afternoon and ran over to Jeff’s studio to have a look at his new work. I urge to go; you will not be disappointed. Vickie and I are honored to announce a gimmeLIVE concert series beginning on the Winter Solstice, Saturday, December 21, 2013 to help the Gloucester UU Church raise money for Meetinghouse restoration, with the goal being that the Meetinghouse becomes one of Gloucester’s premier concert and performance venues.

This is one of our City’s most cherished landmarks, it’s lantern steeple with a bell crafted by Paul Revere having guided mariners into port for over 200 years.  The acoustics are excellent and the Meetinghouse currently seats about 300 people.  One major goal is to renovate the balcony, which will increase capacity to 525.  More restoration info here.

We will feature top Gloucester talent in this very special holiday concert:

Feast of St. Joseph Film Project Update

St. Joseph Day Altar ©Kim Smith 2013 copyDear Community,

An update on the progress of the St. Joseph’s Day Film Project ~

Last year I wrote the script for our community documentary film about how Gloucester families celebrate the Feast of St. Joseph. We spent the month of March filming in your welcoming homes with your beautifully decorated altars and sharing your special stories and traditions. I wrote at that time, tremendous thanks is owed Felicia for coordinating the visits to her friend’s homes and for opening her home and family to filming during their preparations and celebration. Special thanks goes to Sefatia for coordinating the trolley tour and to her family for sharing their stories. Tremendous thanks goes to all the families for their generous hospitality and for embracing the project, including the Orlandos, the Ferrantes, the Groppos, the Silvas, the Canovas, the Scolas, the Russos, and many more.

St. Joseph Trolley Party ©Kim Smith 2013

Following filming in March, I have spent the past months filming what is called B-roll, which is very important because although not the primary action that takes place, B-roll gives a documentary a sense of place, and Gloucester is a very special and beautiful place.

Spring, summer, and autumn are the very busiest time of year for my landscape and interior design business. That being said, we are blessed that the best time of day to film is in the very early dawn hours and later hours of the day, which means I have been able to capture many scenes around Gloucester before my work day begins and at the tail end of the work day. I log and transfer all the footage at the end of each day and  make time to create little mini-films, which also helps to organize the B-roll.

Ciaramitaro Family and Friends St. Joseph 2013

Larger projects, such as the St. Joseph Day Film Project and butterfly life story documentaries that I am creating, take much, much greater chunks of time to edit and these projects I save for working on in January and February, when business traditionally slows. I cannot emphasize this enough–big projects require huge chunks of time to edit; huge chunks of time I simply do not have until after the holiday season.

So if you have been wondering about our beautiful community project, know that I am eagerly looking forward to editing the film this winter. Know too, that another challenge to overcome is film distribution. There is no point in creating a beautiful documentary about our community and not have the knowledge on how to best distribute the film.

I hope this clarifies any questions that you may have. If not, please feel free to contact me at kimsmithdesigns@hotmail.com or through the comment section of this post. Thank you!

Sincerely,

Kim

The Fleet

DSC00888

Traditionally I suspect when people think of the Gloucester Fleet or Gloucester Fishermen they think of large draggers, wooden or steel.  Fact is probably over 90% of our fleet are boats less than 50 feet in length and most are made of fiberglass.  Sure there are a few draggers left but that subsector of Gloucester’s fleet is miniscule compared to what it once was.

This morning in the office our fishermen were having a conversation about how many fishermen and lobstermen are due to retire within the next 10 years.  The last great generation of fishermen to fish out of this port are nearing retirement.  The last generation of fishermen who can remember Gloucester fishing when it was humming.

Dave Sag’s Thursday Night Blues Party with Orville Giddings, Mark Earley and Steve Chaggaris @ The Rhumb Line 8-11~ 11.21.2013

This Thirsty,

The polls are in. And it’s official: Orville Giddings and Marque Earley  are the undisputed kinghs of Ipsquitch. Many Magi believe that twins were born at the virgin birth, and scholars have long debated how a freakin’ tenor sax was hawked out of the birth canal to the tune of “Yummy, Yummy, Yummy, I got love in my tummy”. We’re here to dispel the notion that flossing will help you lead a more upright life. Indeed, the mere mention of saxophone reeds and guitar picks is enough to send the most  covalent of humanoids into a maelstrom of shock.
That being said, Let’s welcome that  fabulous guffawer of glee and full-time guitslinger Mr. Orville Giddings. This guy writes great songs, sings them well, too, and plays a mean goo tar. and then there’s Marque Earley, tenor and baritone buffonio maestra on sexomaphone, willing to chase you back to whatever evil planet you came from. How can we miss?? Add the stylistic cacklings of Stevedore Chaggaris and basic innuendos of Dave Sag and you have the beginnings of a life worth living and dying for. And we will.
Our new winter hours are 8 to 11. Bring cash.
