True Story: At Addison Gilbert Hospital, dressed as pirate Captain Fred for an injection, I had a little time before the Dial-A Ride bus ride home. The costumed Witch and Thing 1 in Oncology suggested I see the pumpkin carving contest display in the cafeteria. Not having my glasses on, I looked at the entrees. I picked my favorite. It happened to be the AGH Rehab Rebels, where I go for my PT now. I gave them my vote. Today I went to see them, and (brace yourself), free-walked 80 feet. My medical professionals and friends are helping me so much, and I’m trying to do everything right.

Global Climate Crisis to Local Action and How YOU Can Help Affect Change in Our City
Gloucester’s First Wind Turbine
Sunday night I was able to attend only very briefly the discussion that was held at Gloucester’s UU Church, about how our city can become fossil fuel-free, or carbon neutral, in ten years. An ambitious and daunting goal you might think. Yes it is, but other cities have accomplished this truly extraordinary feat. Over the next several months, the organizers will be seeking community-wide input. I sincerely hope that more of these these panel discussions will be held throughout our city to help inform fellow citizens about the possibilities that we can be achieved when we all work together. Global and national initiatives are slow to implement. By working together and by including all facets of our community it is possible to develop initiatives and provide solutions that can be accomplished much more in pace with our changing climate.
I am looking forward to learning more about the solutions that are available to us today. While briefly attending the discussion, I thought about another innovative project that I had been reading about, which is also taking place on the local level at many cities across the country, the Mayors Innovation Project, and specifically how we can learn from this successful program on how to obtain consensus to achieve solutions that will benefit every one of our citizens.

Around the country, mayors are taking the lead on pressing social issues—climate change, infrastructure, economic revitalization, health care, prison reentry, and more. We support and encourage this innovation by providing cutting-edge thinking and concrete examples that your city can use right away. Building high road cities and metropolitan regions is both good for citizens and a key way to move the country to the high road nationally. Cities have enormous untapped assets and political strengths that can be organized better now. The Mayors Innovation Project exists to help its member participants lead by example, share their experiences with peers, and make this argument for cities nationally.”

Just One Look…
Yesterday, as I was doing some framing in the gallery, I saw a great picture across the street. I went outside with my rollator and yelled: “Hey skeleton dog!” Jen Greeke of Gloucester and her dog Mona crossed the street and we took a photo. Jen has started her own fashion design company: harpyfashion.com. Sometimes it only takes one look, and I know there’s a good photo to be captured.

From Global Climate Crisis to Local Action: What Next?
Concerned about climate change? Be among the first to envision a solution!
The Green Committee of the Gloucester UU church, in cooperation with the Cape Ann Forum and Gloucester’s Clean Energy Commission, will present a panel discussion on the rise of carbon pollution causing climate change, and what we can do to stop or reverse the damages. Seven panelists from a broad range of organizations will discuss how to develop a plan for Gloucester to become fossil fuel-free or carbon neutral in a decade.
This event will be held Sunday evening beginning at 7pm at the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church and is free and open to the public. The panel discussion will be followed by a question and answer period, concluding at 8:45. All are invited to stay for a reception concluding at 9:45. This event is sponsored by the Superior Nut Company.

Mission Accomplished: Big Boy Bus
This morning, as I got ready for the gallery, I realized that I hadn’t made arrangements for transportation with the CATA “Dial-a-Ride handicapped bus. I decided to do something I hadn’t had the courage to do before: Take the regular “Big Boy Bus.” So I hurried to the corner for the 9:57 am Gloucester via Lanesville ride. Janet walked me to the corner, just like our moms did on the first day we took the school bus to Kindergarten or elementary school.
One one the newer short busses stopped for me, the chassis was lowered to curb height, and a short ramp swung out, making a level transfer possible with my rollator, with no steps. Icing on the cake was driver Eddie Salah, who had driven me on the ADA handicapped bus a few times and knows me by name. I guess necessity really is the mother of invention. I have just sprouted a new pair of wings, and the raindrops on the window were of joy for me.

Dare I? Oh Why Not!
Halloween morning I dressed in jeans, a heavy long sleeve shirt with black and white stripes, a watch jacket, and outrageous pirate hat. All of these items came from Bananas, a vintage clothing store on Main Street. Captain Fred’s first adventure of the day was a medical appointment at Addison gilbert Hospital. As I got off the bus, I almost chickened out with the hat, but decided to just suck it in and go for it.
I got a lot of attention walking through the lobby, down the hall, and in the elevator. Everyone who passed by smiled, and most said “Happy Halloween” or “Trick or Treat.” Once on the fourth floor, oncology, I was greeted by a witch, and signed in by a Thing with blue hair. I had found kindred spirits on my favorite floor. Of course, we had to take a photo. Nurse Kristen is the witch on my right, and Myriah, of departmental administration, is the Thing on my left. Whether Witch or Thing, they are great people providing exceptional care to me and all of their patients.
