Gloucester Selfie, circa 1940
Alice Curtis made this selfie in her bedroom mirror about 75 years ago. It probably wasn’t Gloucester’s first selfie, but I’ve never seen an older one. Today’s selfie is defined as taken with the photographer’s arm, and no mirror, tripod, or self timer used. Some say a cell phone camera must be used. I say hogwash, and enjoy the photographer who made 7,000 of my historic negatives. Alice was a pioneer in many ways.
Thirty five and some years later, about 1975, I photographed my maternal grandmother, Jennie Lee (Mitchell) Scales reflected in her bedroom dresser mirror. I think the comparison of the two photos is amazing.

Vincent Ferrini Mural Unveiling Event
Chalk up another successful Community event in my gallery. In addition to mural artist Tricia O’Neill, mural subject Vincent Ferrini’s nephew Henry Ferrini was there and spoke to the audience of about forty. After the speeches, the group walked down to see Tricia’s mural. I’d say this was a “win-win” for all.

Veteran’s Day From Virginia McKinnon
Hi Joey, I have a Veteran’s Day story to share with your readers.
Old photo of Veterans on the Stacy Boulevard is taken from the Gloucester Times.
Anthony Rao has also passed on.
My husband, Robert McKinnon, celebrated his 90th Birthday on Halloween with a
gala party at the Gloucester House.
Submitted by Virginia (Frontiero) McKinnon
Going Home- World War II- Robert McKinnon, told to his wife, Virginia
My skipper stated “Bob, if you help me take this LCT (Landing Craft Transport} back to the states, I will have you assigned a rank of Chief Petty Officer.’” I replied “No way, I have my points for discharge and I am going home.” WW2 ended in September 1945, my time was up in February 1946. I was jumping around the Asiatic Pacific from the Philippines, Hawaii, Gilbert and Mariana Islands. I was in the US Navy stationed as a Motor Machinist Mate Second Class on LCTs and LSTs landing troops and supplies for the battles of Saipan and Tarawa. Witnessing many casualties, so many of my shipmates gone, I never believed I would ever be going home. Never to see my family and Gloucester again.
My journey home was uneventful. As I looked around the Navy ship I was aware of the many enlisted men that did not survive the war and would never be going home. I had witnessed thousands of Marines, Navy, Army and Seabees lost in battle.
Arriving in San Francisco, I was informed my formal discharge would take about a week and I would have to wait in the Fargo Building for my disability and pay. Not willing to wait, I took the first train across country. Very little money for my journey home. In the dining car, I soon ran out of money. I would request a cup of hot water adding ketchup and I would look for a few crackers to sustain me.
Arriving in Gloucester, no one was at the depot to greet me. I carried by back pack and walked home. Savoring every step as I looked at my beautiful Gloucester. In my absence my family moved from Washington Square to Western Avenue, just across the street from the Fishermen’s statue. My mother had suffered a stroke. Before I enlisted I remember her singing to me “I did not raise my son to be a solider, I raised him to be my pride and joy.” Her oldest son, my half-brother, Buster” was stationed in Pearl Harbor at the time of the Attack. I, her youngest, was away for four years, more worry than my mother could endure. There was no “welcome home party.” My dad had a job waiting for me at his machine shop, Independent Machine Company, as a diesel machinist, repairing the engines on of the many fishing boats. I was so happy and fortunate to be employed.
All my buddies survived World War II. Our reunions were happy times at Good Harbor Beach and at the YMCA. Just walking the boulevard now had special meaning of comrades together again, survivors of World War II and now part of the greatest generation in the history of our country.
Beautiful Mama Jessica Brand and Baby Emerson
Last weekend I had the joy to meet Jessica Brand and her adorable baby boy Emerson when she stopped down at the dock to talk to Joey about her company Dinner Dealer and her upcoming event, North Shore Emporium. You can hear all about the event as well as the fabulous deals she is offering for this years’ Dinner Dealer deck–Passports, Duckworth’s, and Foreign Affairs, to name only several of the outstanding restaurants participating–by listening to today’s Couples in Love Podcast.
Rolling Down The River From Brianne Caso
The restoration of the Phyllis A
Hi Joey,
The restoration of the Phyllis A continues in earnest at Gloucester Marine Railway. This week the iconic red pilot house, spars, and engine were removed. She is being lightened up before coming off the rails and then picked up on the big blue travel lift. There is a spot waiting for the Phyllis A in the parking lot, so she can have more extensive work done without tying up the railway. We are actively seeking volunteers to help with her restoration and to help with mailing and other office type work too. Please come by the Steel Drive behind Fosters on Saturday 8-4 to help support the Phyllis A’s restoration, while getting rid of your unwanted steel.

There are Many Paths, but only One Way

Lise Breen to Lecture on Cape Ann’s Participation in the Slave Trade
Lise Breen will be lecturing on Cape Ann’s Participation in the Slave Trade, Sunday November 9th at 7 pm at the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church. This lecture, “Black O Heavens: Links to Some Cape Ann Slave Owners, Slave Ship Owners and Captains, and Universalists,” is open to the public and there is only a free-will offering to benefit the Meetinghouse Preservation Fund.
Throughout this year, Lise Breen has been presenting various aspects of her research on Cape Ann’s complicity with slavery. You may have heard her speak at the Church last February on the Daltons of Gloucester. She has given talks on related topics for NOAA, The Gloucester Writers Center Diggers Series, the Rockport Unitarian Church, and at the Sandy Bay Historical Society. Ms. Breen has received a Phillips Library Fellowship from the Peabody Essex Museum and a Paul Cuffe Memorial Fellowship from the Munson Institute, Mystic Seaport Museum, to help support her research.

Dave Sag’s Blues Party to host The Earley Birds @ The Rhumb Line Tonight 8:30-11:30pm 11.6.2014
Get that file out and start sharpening your chainsaw in preparation for the arrival of “The Earley Birdz”. No, not the dentist drill of a saxist, but the other one: the Mississippi saxophonist and graveyard vocalist, the OTHER Mark Earley. A great singer, I have worked occasionally with him and love his vibe and choice of material.

Of course, it doesn’t hurt to drag in that fabulous guitarist : Mr. Larry Sortwell, late of the great band “Grapevine Road”, to whoop it up. And wait’ll you hear his creamy voice, smooth as baby’s feet. Mr. John Cameron, keyboard wizard and my personal food taster, is also making a rare appearance, what with being so busy making toys for xmas in his workshop. Round it out with Mr. John Loud, local boy made good, on eggbeaters, and you have a great night of cool toons. I’m really excited about this. Now, if I could just stop the voices in my head….

Gallery as Venue for Community Events
I’ve hosted a few community gallery events over the past 15 years. Political “Meet and Greets” are interesting and fun. The reelection of Bruce Tarr for State Senate was my first such event, then Bob Whitmarsh for City Council, and recently Mike Boucher for State Representative (accompanying photo). There is no charge to the candidate or visitor for the 2 to 4 hour event. The candidates or incumbents bring signs, literature, food and refreshments. And they take it all away when it’s over. My criteria for selection is this: You have only to ask me.
I have also hosted a wedding reception, and the final meeting with the Mass Cultural Council to grant Gloucester’s Harbortown Cultural District. I’ve been told that this community meeting was instrumental in receiving our designation. I’ve invited food and wine vendors share free samples, as well as restaurants. My next public event is seArts holding a mural “unveiling” on Saturday, November 8. The reception runs from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. The mural honors Gloucester artist Tricia O’Neill’s, artwork and honors the subject, famed Gloucester writer Vincent Ferrini. It is on the side of Palazola’s sporting goods facing Porter Street. The public is invited.

Madhouse Today…
I swear you couldn’t dream up this scene to paint it just the way it was at that very moment when I snapped the shot in between offloading boats.
You couldn’t have dreamed up the clouds or the sun breaking through at just the right angle to lead straight down the harbor to our dock. You couldn’t have dreamed up the lobster boats waiting to offload at just the right perpendicular locations to frame the shot on either side of the lobster boat’s mast that was tied up at the dock. Picture perfect.
Sometimes amid the madness you don’t really have time to take it all in because you’re ass deep in work but that one capture you managed to fire off brings it all back and reminds you that yes indeed, it wasn’t a dream.
