Quarky Pants Junior!

Juvenile Black Crowned Night heron ©Kim Smith 2015Allowing me to get a little closer, perhaps one of these days (before he/she’s all grown up), I’ll catch a side-by-side of Black-crowned Night Heron parent and juvenile. Here he is standing on one leg, just as do mom and dad!Great Blue Heron ©Kim Smith 2015

A little ways off was a Great Blue Heron also hunting amongst the reeds. I captured him in fight with my movie camera as he flew to the other side of the pond. Thanks to E.J., who was on a morning walk and pointed out the general vicinity to where he had landed, I was able to get another clip of the heron flying.

I am searching for quiet places to record harbor and shore sounds, away from the roar of the surf, as well as where boat and machine engines don’t muffle or drown out every other sound. Its harder than you may imagine especially because there can be little to no wind. If you know of a quiet place where you especially love to listen to the music of Cape Ann, please answer in the comments section or email me at kimsmithdesigns@hotmail.com. Thank you!

Dave Sag’s Blues Party Tonight with Scotty Shetler @ The Rhumb Line 8:30-11:30pm 8.27.2015

Dave Saginario

Dave says,

This Thursday I’m really psyched to bring you something new and scrofulous: The Tenor Titan, Mr. Scotty Shetler. We played here in the “old” days and he just slipped through my cracks. Ah, all these years…. You gotta hear this guy play! He just oozes Omphalos! Sings, too. A great front man!

Not only that, but Mr. Pete Henderson, lonely in these parts, is making a rare appearance on catarrh and vocals. Another awesome boost to our flame-throwing lineup.Top it all off with the Atomic Clock, Mr. David Mattacks with me cringing in the background and you’ll be crying “Uncle!”. This could be one of the best shows all summer!

Explore downtown Gloucester through the historic lens of maritime painter Fitz Henry Lane

unnamed-3
The Cape Ann Museum is pleased to present Fitz Henry Lane’s Gloucester, a guided walking tour, on Saturday, September 5 at 10:00 a.m. Explore downtown Gloucester and discover what it was like in the 19th century when Fitz Henry Lane roamed the streets and painted the views. Tours last about one and a half hours and are held rain or shine. Participants should be comfortable being on their feet for that amount of time. Cost is $10 for Cape Ann Museum members; $20 for nonmembers (includes Museum admission). Space is limited and reservations are required. Email info@capeannmuseum.org or call (978) 283-0455, x10 for more information or to reserve a space. This tour will be offered again on September 26.

Fitz Henry Lane was a Cape Ann artist, printmaker and world-renowned American marine painter. With his subtle use of gleaming light, Lane is generally regarded as one of the finest 19th century practitioners of the style known as luminism. The Cape Ann Museum’s unparalleled collection of works by Fitz Henry Lane – which includes paintings, drawings and lithographs – is on permanent display in the gorgeously renovated Lane Gallery, a space fully devoted to Lane’s life and work.

Do you care?

dog1

When it’s early in the morning and you are walking your dog do you really care what you are dressed like?

I definitely do not. I am the crazy lady walking her dogs around the block in Christmas PJ’s

(yes i realize its August I love them and wear them year round)

Do you go out of your way to get dressed and get in appropriate dog walking attire? OR

Do you just roll out of bed throw on a sweatshirt (maybe) and some flip flops and go?

Gloucester Stage continues Playtime Stories, a fun combination of children’s stories, live performances and children’s activities for ages 3 and older, on Saturday, August 29 at 10 am at Gloucester Stage, 267, East Main Street, Gloucester. The stories set for August 29 are from Dr. Seuss: the new Dr. Seuss story, Which Pet Should I Get? and the classic tale of The Lorax. An Offer To All #GloucesterMA Election Candidates:

gmglogohires

As you all know we don’t take political stances here or endorse candidates but what I’d like to offer is an invitation for any candidate that is running for office in Gloucester to submit a video explaining why they think they are best suited for the position they are running for.  The easiest way to do this would be to upload the video to YouTube.

The videos will be released once and placed on GMG at 7PM on the following night that they are received.  If more than one video is submitted to me at goodmorninggloucester@yahoo.com then the first one that is submitted will be aired the following evening at 7PM and the next one submitted will be posted the following evening at 7PM.  There will be a link in each candidates post containing their video to goodmorninggloucester@yahoo.com which will have all previously submitted candidate’s videos.

Once they are submitted they will be added to https://2015gloucestermaelection.wordpress.com/ where all the videos will be available for viewing at any time on the same page.

In the title of the video it should list the candidate’s name- position they are running for and the words “GMG submission”.

If a candidate is not able to create a video to submit, then that speaks in my opinion to their qualifications to hold a position at this level of City Government.  If a candidate doesn’t read GMG or doesn’t get the word about this opportunity then that also speaks to their qualifications to hold a position at this level of City Government knowing the reach GMG has.

As always the GMG politics disclaimer- any post on these pages containing a candidate does not imply an endorsement for any candidate.  Comments on www.goodmorninggloucester.com for these video submissions on the blog will be turned off for these posts as well.

Hopefully this will serve to help candidates get their message across.

Good luck and thank you to all that participate in the process for the love of Gloucester and making it better.

What? You’ve never been aboard the Beauport Princess Cruise Ship? Rectify that on Schooner Festival Sunday!

This is NOT a small whale-watch or fishing boat.  It’s a fully-loaded CRUISE SHIP featuring 2 enclosed decks with dance floors, 3 full-service bars (wine, beer & top-shelf liquor) and an open-air top deck — theatre seating on the first deck, tables on the second deck and couches on the top deck.

The weather will probably be great, but even if it’s not, you can party in luxury and comfort on both of the air-conditioned (or heated if need be) indoor decks with bars and dance floors.

Plus you’ll be partying with 5-time Grammy Nominees Roomful of Blues and cruising historic Gloucester Harbor full of tall ships on Schooner Festival Sunday!  Our last three concert cruises sold out, so please don’t be one of those people who calls us begging for a spot we can’t give you.  Get your tickets RIGHT HERE RIGHT NOW. Then you can relax and enjoy Schooner Festival weekend!

Only 3 days left to join Patrick Stewart (whose new show premieres tonight) in supporting Ocean Alliance’s Snotbot!

You’ve heard about SNOTBOT, right?  OK, maybe you’re just visiting, so you haven’t heard about this yet.  Let me explain: few other Kickstarter pledges could be better for the future of Gloucester (and anyone who lives or visits here) than this one — really, no kidding.  You’ll be helping Ocean Alliance develop revolutionary drone technology for whale research — and there’s no telling what they might discover.  But what ever it is, you’ll be a part of it along with iconic actor Patrick Stewart (Jean Luc Picard on “Star Trek”, with a new show called “Blunt Talk” premiering TONIGHT on Starz)!

This is good for Ocean Alliance (which translates good for Gloucester because we want them to thrive here), good for whales, good for our planet, and good for all of us who will benefit from whatever they discover using this new gizmo!  So pledge now right here.
