Frank Ciolino, half of the team that makes “Da Sticka” with FOB Shewsberry banged out a personal best 4 hours and 36 minutes in the Fiesta 5K
Unfortunately shortly after this photo was taken by Ed Collard the Boys in Blue spotted Frank on the new homeland security cameras and he spent the night in jail for crimes committed back when he was running with Whitey.
I’m sure Ed would appreciate some feedback on his camera work.

Spring into Action!
The weather is warming up outside and people are starting to get more active with outdoor activities. Many of us enjoy getting out and working in our yards and gardens this time of year. However, increased activity can sometimes result in nagging injuries. Many of the things that we enjoy doing require the use of muscles that are not used as often or vigorously over the cold winter months. The repetitive lifting, bending, and pulling motions used with gardening and yard work can often lead to muscle strains or overuse problems such as tendinitis. The lower back and hands/arms are the areas that bear much of the stress associated with these activities. Fortunately, there are some easy exercises that can be done to help reduce the risk of pesky injuries that could prevent you from enjoying fun in the sun over these upcoming spring and summer months.
***All stretches should be done 3 times and held for 15-20 seconds. Never bounce while stretching and always consult your physician prior to doing these exercises if you have any hip or lower back issues.
1. Double knee to chest: pull both knees gently towards your chest until you feel a light pulling in your buttocks/lower back.![]()
2. Single knee to chest: Pull one knee at a time towards your chest until you feel a light pulling in you buttocks/lower back.![]()
3. Lower trunk rotations: lie on your back with your knees bent and feet resting on the floor. Let your knees gently rotate towards the floor while keeping your lower back flat on the ground. Repeat this going to the right and the left side.![]()
4. Kneeling hip flexor stretch: Kneel on a pillow and gently lunge forward on your opposite leg until you feel a gentle stretch across the front of the hip/thigh on the leg you are kneeling on.![]()
5. Standing groin stretch: Spread your legs apart and gently lean to one side until you feel a pull on the inner thigh of the leg you are leaning away from.![]()

The Blackburn Challenge, to be held on July 23 this year, is the premier human-powered open-water event on the east coast of North America. In 2011 the event will be especially exciting. Not only is it the silver anniversary running of the event, but is also the 6th annual North American Open Water Rowing Championship (NAOWRC).
One of the reasons why this event has been recognized as one of the best open water races in America is due to the venue – a 20 mile circumnavigation of Cape Ann Massachusetts – a course that inevitably serves up a wide variety of conditions on the water. The first three or so miles of the race are along the protected and tidal Annisquam River, resulting in something akin to a head race, but with plenty more interesting obstacles to avoid (mooring and navigation buoys, boats, docks, etc.) and a 17 mile open water race after it. Once the river empties into the open waters of Ipswich Bay, the wind strength and direction play a decisive role in determining the conditions of the day, which range from relative calm (it’s never a flat water event) to very rough (staying upright and afloat trump the idea of competition). The last couple of miles from the Dogbar Breakwater at the entrance of Gloucester Harbor to Pavillion Beach, are usually plagued by confused boat wakes from numerous fishing, whale watch and pleasure boats going in all directions. Each year at the Blackburn brings us a very different story, making the event so interesting for open-water aficionados. One thing that thankfully remains the same each year is the fun time after finishing – cold beer, massages, good music and food and the inevitable harrowing stories from the event. This is an event not to be missed!
All event information may be found at the event website: www.blackburnchallenge.com
