Barry is originally from Gloucester, was on Rocky Neck years ago, and back visiting until May 26th. Aside from the fact that Paul and Ed were jonesing for deviled eggs and didn’t want to wait until Memorial Day weekend, tomorow morning’s Mug Up is also so Barry can meet some GMG peeps before he heads back home to the Central Coast of California.
If you didn’t check out Barry’s artwork, you can see it at http://www.barrymarshallpaintings.com/ and come by for Mug Up tomorrow morning from 9:00-11:00 am at Khan Studio & the GMG Gallery, 77 Rocky Neck Ave., G3 and say hi to Barry before he leaves.
P.S. In case no one can tell, Joey wrote the top part of this post. Hope to see as many of you as can come tomorrow. And remember, anyone who comes as a stranger always leaves as a friend.

The Case For Pickles
So you know when you have that brief moment of weakness and you’re hungry and you know you just gotta eat something but it’s not breakfast, lunch or dinner time?
You face decisions all day every day about what you’re gonna eat.
I’m not trying to preach here, just offer what has been working for me to keep my diet clean.
Pickles.
Loaded with flavor. When refrigerated have a nice snap to them. Zero Calories. So instead of grabbing the bag of chips, or the candy bar- pickles.
Disclaimer: I may turn green eating so many pickles as my cravings tend to perk up every second I sit down. Now I know how EJ feels about carrots.
I got the industrial sized jar at Costco. There might be a hundred spears in there.
Le Gamin
We had a very successful move and my daughter Liv is loving her new apartment. See her blog Boston to Brooklyn for several photos. For a lovely belated Mother’s Day treat, she took me to one of her favorite restaurants in Brooklyn, a sweet and authentic French cafe, Le Gamin. The charming patio was open, despite the soft evening mist, and we dined in the garden under the arbor. On Monday nights they serve exquisitely fresh and sweet, all-you-can-eat mussels, poached in Chardonnay and fresh herbs, along with a glass of wine, along with absolutely the most perfect fries; crisp outer skin, tender and hot inside–and all for only $20.00!! Liv and I shared the mussels and salade Niçoise and it was ablsoltuely perfect. She had her favorite mousse au chocolat and I had the most divine crème brûlée ever tasted. I am so taken with Robert Ardor’s recipes, I’ve just this moment ordered his cookbook, in its third printing, Joie de Vivre: Simple French Style for Everyday Living.
Brooklyn balcony above Le Gamin garden, with fresh herbs. Cleverly, the dweller of this flat has draped a bag of soil over the balcony’s edge, reinforced the slashes with industrial tape, and planted four different herbs; with what looks like oregano, thyme, parsley and dill. I am reminded of the beautiful story A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.

No, I didn’t eat all of it but I gave it my best. Here are the food photos I took along the way.

Gloucester Webcam of The Day- Ryan and Wood Distillery Cam
Check Out Ryan and Wood Distillery Website Here
This Webcam and more can be found at www.gloucesterwebcam.com
This www.gloucesterwebcam.com local webcam portal project was an idea I had last year to have as many webcams streaming from local businesses or organizations as possible which highlight the incredible vistas that we as people that live and work here get to enjoy each and every day.
The idea was to have the organization install the webcam, have them embed the webcam feed on their own websites as well and have a link to each business website on the Gloucester webcam portal website to showcase their business as well.
Tim Blakeley from Gloucester Bytes provided the initial installation at ridiculously cheap cost because he believed in the project.
The Cupboard is Open
I hope. My seasonal opening notes say that The Cupboard opens the first Thursday in May. So has anyone had the Fish Sandwich with cheese in 2012?

Seaward Inn Bed And Breakfast Opens this Weekend
The season is opening. The tulips have gone by. Soon we’ll be hunting down that friend with the boat and go catch a striper. Best time of year. The beginning of the beginning.
So as a local who cares that a Bed and Breakfast is opening up? Because you can make it up to mom for forgetting to get something for Mother’s Day and take her to Mother’s Day Brunch at the Seaward Inn on May 13th. Patti DeRosa will be the artist performing 11AM to 2PM, call 978-546-3471 for reservations.

Breakfast at Fort Square Cafe

No way they could eat it all….I got to have a taste and it was so good.
I had the spinach and cheddar omelet…..light on the cheese…….Delicious!
Fort Square Cafe is my favorite place to have breakfast. You can tell when a cook cares about what they send out to you and Heidi is the best!

Had to take a picture, but had to take a bite first
Doesn’t this quiche look good? You see why I had to take a bite before I got out my phone. It tastes as good as it looks and is one reason why I’m very happy that Atlantis opened their Cafe today!
Peter had the Fish Cakes Benedict.
Wow! Some of the best fish cakes we’ve ever had. Too bad they don’t serve dinner. These would make a super appetizer. Jessica the chef uses a secret ingredient. She wouldn’t let me say what it is, but you could always try to guess. The Atlantis Oceanfront Cafe is now open to the public (you don’t have to be a guest at the hotel) 7 days a week from 7:30-11:00am. I’d recommend going before the season gets crazy busy.
You can work up a good breakfast appetite by dancing tonight and there are plenty of opportunities for that. Peter and I will be at Minglewood to see our friend Brad Byrd with his “A” Band (but we’ll do our best to stay out of the video shoot). Now if you’d prefer to be on camera (see the folks from last time), put on something you want to be photographed in and come on down. Music starts at 9.
But if you’d rather not take the chance on ending up in a video directed by Hollywood’s Brandon Rose, check out the other more anonymous opportunities for dancing in the full music lineup here.
Tomorrow we’ve got a major announcement and a very special Artist of the week (actually 2 in 1). Stay tuned . . .

Lunch at La Trattoria
Isn’t that just one of the prettiest things you’ve ever seen?
A couple of weeks ago, I stopped to read the menu at La Trattoria as I walked down Main Street in Gloucester. A customer who was on her way in, took the time to stop and tell me how good the food is! So when a friend of mine came to visit the other day, I took him to La Trattoria for lunch to check it out. We had bruschetta and shrimp scampi for our appetizers, and chicken soup for the main course. We chased that down with tiramisu and gelato with limoncello. My friend also had a cappuccino, pictured above.
To conclude: The food was delicious, the servings were generous but not overwhelming, and the service was friendly and attentive. The restaurant’s design and ambience was classy and comfortable. So, I am glad that that customer I met on the sidewalk sang this place’s praises! She spoke truly. If you like good Italian food, give La Trattoria a try! It’s at 64 Main Street in Gloucester. I am looking forward to trying their pizza…
I’d like to take this time to thank Laurie Brown for recommending bacon on my egg salad sub at Virgilio’s
Great Call Laurie!
No matter how good the ingredients for a sub, the one constant in the making a sub a sub is the sub ROLL.
When you start out with the absolute greatest sub roll in the known universe which is what Virgilio’s makes you already have a huge advantage over everybody else. I’m not sure how you can compete. The move? Get there at 9:30 when the rolls come out fresh. Close your eyes and throw a dart at the sandwich board. No matter what it lands on, it’s likely to be one of the best subs you’ve ever eaten and it’s a bargain.
#Boom!
