SHOW TIMES: FRI. OCT. 9 – SUN. OCT. 11 @ 7:30PM; MON. & TUES. OCT. 12 & 13 @ 5:00PM

After 30 years of war and Taliban rule, “Pop Idol” (the British TV show that was the basis for “American Idol”) has come to Afghanistan. Millions are watching the TV series “Afghan Star” and voting for their favorite singers by mobile phone. For many, this is their first encounter with democracy. This timely film follows the dramatic stories of four contestants as they risk all to become the nation’s favorite singer. But will they attain the freedom they hope for in this vulnerable and traditional nation?

“Wonderful…had the audience cheering!” –Ty Burr, Boston Globe

Chickity Check It- Marty Luster Captures Gloucester

Marty Luster came to town last weekend with son and FOB Brian Luster from A Movable Bridge

Marty is a serious photographer from upstate New York.  We got to hang out at the dory raffle and then the next morning when I brought the boys to George’s for breakfast.  When Brain and Marty stopped down the dock they got a treat because Jay Albert was here so they got to talk photography and blogging while I worked, lol.

So anyway when we went to breakfast we got to talking about Marty’s photography and I told him to be sure to send me a link to his pictures that he took of Gloucester once he gets home and has time to upload them.

You never know what people are going to take pictures of when they are here.  There’s so many pretty things and industrial things, you just never know what perspective someone takes when they are from out of town and what they see through the lens.

Marty sent me the link to his Gloucester photos and he sent it to Jay also.  Jay said something to me yesterday about Marty that was dead on- That Marty captured the essence of Gloucester as a working port.  True dat.

From Georges Dyer-

Cape Ann 350 Climate Action Event – Man at the Wheel, Gloucester

24 October 2009 – 1:00pm – 2:00pm

A gathering of local citizens to make a statement a statement about the need to stabilize atmospheric CO2 concentrations at 350, and take actions to reduce our own emissions.

We will meet at 1pm on Sat. Oct, 24th for a picture around the famous “Old Salt” fisherman’s memorial statue in Gloucester, MA.

The organizers will provide a “350” banner as well as other relevant signs to get the message across in our picture(s).

In addition, we plan to reach out to local press, political groups and local interest groups to raise awareness and catalyze climate action locally, as well as support for climate policy nationally and internationally.

For all of you in Gloucester, on Cape Ann, or around the North Shore of Boston, please join us Sat. Oct 24th at 1pm at the Fisherman’s Statue!!

Of Bloggers From Far Away Places

I’ve had the pleasure to hang out with Brian Luster and his dad Marty from A Moveable Bridge.  We went to breakfast yesterday and got to talk blogging and boats and breakfast and food and all kinds of other good stuff like the difference between “partners” and girlfriends and how some people call their long time girlfriends partners even though they’re not gay.

I discovered Brian’s blog last year after Schooner Festival when I had done an interview with some of the crew members on the Lettie G Howard.  There are a group of bloggers from New York who are a pretty incestuous group.  They all post on each other’s blogs and have similar interests.  (sort of the way I comment on Jay, Kathleen and Steve B’s blogs)

Well here are some of the New York Waterfront Bloggers blogs that I think you ought to know about because they post some pretty interesting stuff that is similar to what we’re doing up here in Gloucester.  I normally wouldn’t give these fucking New York people the time of day (especially given their propensity to root for the Yankees, Jets and Giants).  But since I’ve met Brian and Marty and they seem like regular folk just like us I’ll give ’em a pass on the whole Evil Empire thing.

I’m hoping Brian can organize a field trip of sorts with these New York waterfront bloggers for next year’s Schooner Festival so I can get to meet them and host them for a Beer and Blog event.

Check out these blogs if you get a chance, if you like what we do here on GMG you ought to dig the New York versions too (even if they are FUCKING NEW YORKERS).

The end of seafood by 2048? Some people think so. If it happens, will consumers have been to blame? Politicians who ignore the advice and pleas of scientists? Fishermen who break quotas and fish illegally? The global fishing industry? The film suggests some preventative solutions that are simple and doable, but does the world have the crucial political will to react in time, or is this whole “Inconvenient Truth” about our oceans just a big lie? Narrated by Ted Danson.

Hello,

In case you’re not in the loop, it’s a big week for us at the Cinema:

* Tonight, we’re officially kicking off (though we’ve been open since July) with a Grand Opening. Bring kids at 5:00pm for free face painting and a “Wallace & Gromit” marathon (including the new short, “A Matter Of Loaf And Death”). Doors for the grown-ups open at 6:30pm, with a meet-and-greet-and-gawk (I’m wearing the kilt). I’ll present a season preview at 7:30pm, and anyone who wants to stay for a hi-def trip “Over The Rainbow” can stay when we sit for a flick around 8ish.

* Thursday, October 1st is the launch of “DoctoberFest,” our own 32-day celebration of documentary films. We have 30 features, about a dozen special guests, two musical events (including a silent movie show with live piano accompaniment) and we’re opening Michael Moore’s new movie Capitalism: A Love Story on October 16th. Doors open at 6:30pm, festival preview at 7:30pm, and a (ticketed) screening of The Way We Get By ’round 8:00pm.

Click on the link below for more information about our line-up.

Maybe I’ll see ya…

From the site-The Gloucester New Arts Festival was founded in 2005. Inspired by the complex landscapes of the historic fishing port, Director Sarah Slifer has been bringing compelling, exploratory artists to make and show work in the downtown area. The variety of sites- indoor and outdoor, old and new – have helped to shape the way the public experience the work, and sometimes shape the work itself.

This program is supported in part by a grant from the Gloucester Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency, and by the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts (seARTS) through the Massachusetts Cultural Council John and Abigail Adams Grant for Cultural Economic Development.

Chelsea (played by legendary 21-year-old adult film star Sasha Grey) is an upscale Manhattan call girl who provides more than just a sexual encounter; for a price, she’ll simulate a complete romantic relationship—a girlfriend “experience.” Despite a wide variety of happy customers, Chelsea wants to expand her business. Her real boyfriend Chris, a personal trainer at a downtown gym, has come to terms with his girlfriend’s level of experience, not to mention the posh apartment they share as a result of her success. Directed by Steven Soderbergh, who won an Oscar for “Traffic,” and didn’t win an Oscar for “Ocean’s Eleven,” “Ocean’s Twelve” or “Ocean’s Thirteen.”

In The Loop is a smart comedy that is drawing instant comparisons to some of the great political and absurdist comedies such as Doctor Strangelove, Wag The Dog and Thank You For Smoking by way of the legendary troupe Monty Python. With razor-sharp, truly laugh-out-loud dialogue the film pokes fun at the absurdity and ineptitude of our highest leaders. With everyone looking out for number one, and the fate of the free world at stake (but apparently incidental), the hilarious ensemble cast of characters bumbles its way through Machiavellian political dealings, across continents, and toward comic resolutions that are unforeseeable.

“A venomous and incisive cinema exposé and it builds a relentless head of comic steam that never subsides.” -Mark Keizer, Boxoffice Magazine

“The savage comedy of ‘In The Loop’ is enough to justify hailing it as a triumph.” -Allan Hunter, Daily Express
