In the picture below can you see the four different splines that come off of the clock mechanism? Those shafts go out to the four sides of the City Hall Clock to turn the hands. Pretty cool at how simple it all is.

They were doing some big time work up in the rigging. This cat was way up there disconnecting some stays that connected the two masts. Barefoot. My knees would be knocking so hard if I got 10 feet off the ground, never-mind way up at the top of the mast like this. Schooner Festival is coming this weekend- don’t forget! If you haven’t been down to see it yet we have some insider tips coming for you later from Daisy Nell, Chairperson of the Gloucester Schooner Festival 09

This is a whale safe break away swivel used on lobster buoys. The swivel has a weak part (highlighted by the blue arrow in the picture below) designed to break away with 600 pounds of pressure.
In the unfortunate instance that a whale might get caught in a lobster pot line, it will break the swivel and swim free. This is another in many responsible steps the lobster industry has adopted (along with escape vents for small lobsters on the traps and biodegradable hog rings which break down and let the vents fall out in the case of lost gear).
The offshore fishery and Pacific coast use 1100 pound break away swivels but our inshore lobstermen use 600 pound ones.
Look for a video with Johnny “Doc” Herrick at 7AM in which we break down the parts of a lobster buoy and their costs.

Sam heads out. By himself. To haul his traps and make a days pay. No one barking at him. No one telling him where to go or what to do. Just him and his boat. Hauling traps, Baiting Traps, Setting Traps. Independent.

Last week herring was scarce with some bait companies completely sold out. Yesterday the Cape Seafoods boats came in loaded. Feast or famine. Yesterday was feast. It was all asses and elbows as the Cape Seafood Crew earned their pay offloading a whole buttload of fish.

The herring have been scarce so the big boats have been going all the way to George’s Bank to try to find them with no luck in the past two weeks. That means they have been burning a ton of fuel as the herring boats are gigantic vessels.
We’ve been filling in by using pogies for lobster bait which are not nearly as much fun to handle. They break down much faster and they produce this incredibly slick oil which gets all over the floor and everywhere making it a PITA to use. Beggars can’t be choosers though so whatever it takes to get our lobstermen out fishing is what we will try to provide.

Day before yesterday Aaron on The Lady Margaret brought in this Triggerfish. In my 33 years down the dock and after handling a bajillion pounds of fish at our dock I’ve only seen a couple of these. The wikipedia page on Triggerfish is pretty interesting. It says they are normally found in warm coastal waters of the Atlantic, Mediterranean and the Indo-Pacific. This one must have followed it’s way up the jet Gulf stream.

Notie that Peter has a float attached to his lobster gauge? I wonder how many get lost overboard without the float.
