Treasured Audio-Gloucester History Cigar Joe Talks About Smuggling Liquor In the Early Part of The Twentieth Century Part 1

Good Morning Gloucester Exclusive

image

The family of Cigar Joe Frontiero brings Good Morning Gloucester these treasured recordings of smuggling liquor into the Essex River and into Annisquam in the first of a multi-part collection of recordings.  I’m happy that the family entrusted GMG with these priceless recordings and am proud to be able to have the platform in which we can archive and share with the community.

Cigar Joe Frontiero born in 1898 these tapes were recorded in 1981 when he was 83 years old.  Cigar Joe lived to be 96 years old and had whiskey and cigars at his nursing home every day til the day he died according to his granddaughter Josie Cary.

Ray Witham and Joseph “Cigar Joe” Frontiero land an 18 foot basking shark after it got tangled and died in a mackerel net off Rockport.

The history behind the tapes: Someone had asked Cigar Joe for an interview for an oral history project but Cigar Joe decided to do the recording himself. At the time he was having trouble with circulation in his legs and spent most of the time at home so he bought a tape recorder. He had trouble with the tape recorder and threw all of the tapes away. His mailman took the trashed tapes, spliced them, and made copies. He gave Cigar Joe copies and kept backups (with Cigar Joe’s consent) in case the originals were lost. This occurred in 1981.

Look for part 2 of the recordings Monday April 1st at 6AM

47 Motor Life Boat Tour At USCG Station Gloucester With MK1 Kurt Lubbers

This is The First Part of A Ten Part Video Series-

CWO2 Luis Munoz extended an invitation to GMG to come down to the USCG Station Gloucester and see what it’s all about in anticipation of the upcoming Boating Safety Event. GMG Contributor Manny Simoes and I spent a fantastic morning at the station.

The entire crew at the Station was incredibly friendly and courteous and I can’t thank Chief Warrant Officer Munoz enough for the access he granted us..

In our first video we have FOB (Friend Of the Blog) Kurt Lubbers give us a tour or the inside compartments including the Survivors Compartment, Engine Room, Auxiliary Machinery Space, and All The Way Inside The Hold of The Boat.

You are cordially invited to attend US Coast Guard Station Gloucester’s Boating Safety Day.  This multi-partnered community event kicks off National Safe Boating Week on Saturday, May 21st, from 9am to 3pm and will take place at USCG Station Gloucester.  Our boating safety partners involved in this event include Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod, Coast Guard Auxiliary, US Power Squadron, State of Massachusetts Marine Environmental Protection, commercial fishing safety representatives and many others. The goal of this community event is to put all aspects of boating safety back in the public eye as we approach our spring and summer boating season.  We will showcase an assortment of search and rescue demonstrations, structured boating /paddling safety and Boating Under the Influence (BUI) forums, flare demonstrations, commercial fishing vessel safety, tours of Station Gloucester and vessels, as well as various informational booths.

Andre Bouchard- Owner of Five Used Lobster Traps

image

Andre contacted me through the blog and asked if I knew where he could get some used lobster traps to fish with his family under a recreational permit.

Of course.  We got him set up with some great traps and next summer he will be ready to rock.

If anyone needs any info on how to get a recreational lobster permit or a student permit for their children let me know.  We can always source decent used traps for you so you don’t have to go and spend $70 on new ones.

Much more to come.  Pictures and videos.  I only stayed through 5 houses as I needed to get the girls home but our boy Manny is with Sista felicia and hopefully all the houses will get captured.

All I can say is that it was beautiful and emotional with waves of old school tradition washing over the rooms as the women sang and embraced each other.

The videos should be spectacular and photos will be plenty.

The Restoration Works

Meet Dean Snell, owner of The Restoration Works at 16 Rogers Street. However, actually meeting Dean is not quite as easy as wanting to meet him. First you must find the entrance to the building (it’s on the side) and then climb a steep staircase up three stories to his wonderfully aloof loft that is home to his office, workspace and storage facility that is chock full of antique furniture awaiting his skillful hand.

Dean has owned and operated The Restoration Works for about 18 years, first in a garage, then his home and for the past 15 years or so in his third floor sanctuary on Rogers Street.

Lettie G Howard and New York City Seaport Museum In Dire Financial Condition

This was sent along by my buddy Bowsprite.  The NYC Seaport Museum hosts the Lettie Howard-The Schooner which many people consider to have the most historical significance to Gloucester.

Her Lettie G Painting-

However, hope exists: Peter Stanford, the founding member of the museum, and a committed group of people who love the ships have presented a marketing and funding plan in an effort to save the neglected fleet.
With programs that include Visiting Ship Programs, education of the history of the vessels and the piers, arts of the sailor, exhibition of local and current nautical artists, and participation in OpSail 2012, the group would accomplish things that the current museum have not done.

Among the proposed is that “…the schooner Lettie G. Howard (1893), scheduled for sale by the Seaport Museum,
be retained as a dockside exhibit ship. The museum had ruled against this
because they felt the wooden schooner, would be damaged by jostling against the
pier due to wakes stirred up by passing harbor traffic. This concern, however,
is contradicted by ten years’ prior experience, between 1968 and 1978, when the
Howard was open to the public at pierside with her hull in worse shape than it
is today.

We recommend that she be placed at a landing stage on Pier 16, with a fisheries
display aboard as she had 30-odd years ago.
The ship fished out of the Fulton Fish Market, in which the public is showing
great interest, and there is a rich trove of photos of similar Gloucester
schooners readily available, including photos of these vessels fishing under
sail at sea, which have been published in a well-known book, Men, Fish and
Boats, to which we hold the rights and the original photos now on file in Mystic
Seaport.”

It has always been the people who love the ships who have kept them afloat.
They have never been needed more right now.

Chickity Check It! Abby Ytzen’s Biomes Guidebook

From Abby’s Site

Hello.

I am a hard working creative person from the midwest with a passion for design. As a designer and illustrator my work has a distinctive element of playful cleverness. I have a strong desire to connect art to the wider world around me and to use my skills as a designer to create work that is not only beautiful but will have a lasting impact on the hearts and minds of people. I believe design is a powerful tool in the language of our culture. As artists and designers we have a responsibility to the integrity of our visual influence. I believe good design communicates truth and draws people together in community.

One of Abby’s many projects was a cool Biomes Guidebook which she prides herself on because she feels that it speaks to young children as well as highly educated people that are familiar with Biomes. You can even check it out free.

Biomes Guildbook

Because education was a main goal of this exhibit, I created a 50 page guidebook with a poster pull out to accompany the biome illustration. Creating another level of depth, this guidebook contains detailed information about biomes and the animals that inhabit them, including conservation status information. As a summation of my research, this guidebook provides the visual and informational link both within my exhibit as well as across the art and science disciplines.

How Cool Is Lily Linquata? GMG Buoy Almost Done

Lily makes these cool nautical themed buoys and sells them (see how you can get one for yourself below the pic).  It was so nice of her to think of us here at GMG headquarters and make one of her beautiful buoys with Da logo!

photo-1

Lily Linquata started painting buoys last summer as part of her involvement in a seasonal gift shop downtown. After selling over fifty to tourists, all from out of state and usually from the middle of the country, she thought there might be a market for unique nautical items outside of Gloucester. Encouragingly for all of us, there is. Based on some blogged photos alone, wedding-related orders have been placed from Chatham, MA and Florida, as well as nursery requests from New York City and a few local birthday buys, as well.

Purchased at Winchester Fishing, these buoys are the real deal; what you’ll find bobbing in the Atlantic most days. Hand painted and calling for three hours of time each (outside of drying) they’re currently selling for $25 to $50 via custom e-mail orders. As of April, these buoys and a few other local items will be available on http://gloucestergoods.com/
