Our fishermen call them Monkey Balls but they are more commonly referred to by marine biologists as “Sea Squirts”. Sea Squirt is a pretty apt description as every time one gets squished they seem to find a way to squirt you right in the eye. I took these photos Saturday morning just as they came out of the water.

Join Revels Rep as they perform “A Celebration of the Sea,” an exuberant program exploring the lives of whalers during the great age of sail and their families who remained on shore. Beginning on the docks of New Bedford, the program includes packing for a journey; farewell to friends and family; shipboard work and entertainment; a whale hunt; a storm at sea, and a celebration of the sailors’ safe return.

Deck Prisms
In the days before electricity, light below a vessel’s deck was limited to candles, oil and kerosene lamps. A clever solution for the light problem was the deck prism. Laid flush into the deck, the prism point drew light down below decks.
I set this reproduction on a light box and shot on the same plane as the base. This was submitted for my 365 Project.

Essex Shipbuilding Museum Crane Pic From Bill O’Connor
Hey Joe,
When I stopped to snap a shot of the schooner Ardell skeleton today at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum, I came across this rusty, old, snow-covered gem. While I was taking photos, a guy hanging around in the yard told me it used to be a school bus used in Essex back in the 50’s (circa ’54 or ’55). They converted it into a crane and still use it around the yard.
Enjoy~Bill O’Connor
