Project Description: An Environmental Notification Form (ENF) has been filed with the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs by Cape Pond Ice Company, LLC to renovate an existing 34,423-sf building to reconfigure and modernize the ice plant, add 33 parking spaces within the building and convert a portion of the building to a three-level, 15,300-sf restaurant. The project may also include a distillery. The project does not include any expansion of the existing building. The site is located on filled and flowed tidelands in the Gloucester Inner Harbor Designated Port Area.

The Launch

Over at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum on Friday, these great 8th graders launched 2 more boats.  The faces on these kids speaks volumes of how much fun and educational this experience is.  The teachers who were there, I wish I had them in 8th grade.  Thank you to the Essex Shipbuilding Museum for all your experience and to Teacher Dave Brown and Amy Donnelly for your dedication to these students.  It was also so wonderful to see Harold Burnham watch some future boat builders launch their creations.

Last year I went over there to take photos of this great way to help students learn a new skills. Amy one of the teachers invited me back.  It is fun to watch and learn. The teachers at O’Maley and the Essex Shipbuilding Museum are really great.  On Friday, they will be launching this boats.

The family of Cigar Joe Frontiero brings Good Morning Gloucester these treasured recordings of Fishing out of Gloucester MA in the early part of the century. I’m happy that the family entrusted GMG with these priceless recordings and am proud to be able to have the platform in which we can archive and share with the community.

Cigar Joe Frontiero born in 1898 these tapes were recorded in 1981 when he was 83 years old.

The history behind the tapes: Someone had asked Cigar Joe for an interview for an oral history project but Cigar Joe decided to do the recording himself. At the time he was having trouble with circulation in his legs and spent most of the time at home so he bought a tape recorder. He had trouble with the tape recorder and threw all of the tapes away. His mailman took the trashed tapes, spliced them, and made copies. He gave Cigar Joe copies and kept backups (with Cigar Joe’s consent) in case the originals were lost. This occurred in 1981.

Cape Pond Ice Company’s current factory was built in 1944 (74 years ago!) –  300 tons per day Frick Ammonia block ice plant, with 2 40′ x 120′ “Pond Tanks” freezing 3,600 335 lb. ice blocks:
