Jason Burroughs’ art at The Hive

Yesterday evening at The Hive (on Pleasant Street, less than a block up from Main Street, on the right) there was an opening of an art show by Jason Burroughs in their back room. It was accompanied by a concert by a variety of bands. I stopped in to snag some photos! Jason is an up-and-coming local artist, who also works in the programs offered at The Hive and Art Haven.

He will also be in the gallery during the block party today. Stop by to see the art and meet the artist! And maybe buy a print or an original… Get it before he gets famous and the prices go up!

Origami Nazgul

Designed by Jason Ku, published in Origami Tanteidan Magazine #129. Folded by me from one 12″ uncut sheet of foil paper. Here’s a photo that gives you a better sense of the scale of the model:

nazgul2

This is a great model!  Jason Ku designs some amazing origami.  His lobster design is so awesome it’s almost NSFW, just because it might literally blow your mind, and your boss doesn’t want to have to call an ambulance when that happens. You can see it on his website. (Go ahead, I dare you! Scroll down on his page to see the detail on the bottom side of the lobster!)

Rocky Neck Gallery: Skip Montello & Tom Robinson-Cox

rngSkip Montello & Tom Robinson-Cox are exhibiting photography at the Rocky Neck Art Gallery starting tomorrow, Wednesday, August 14 for three weeks. But don’t wait, or at least, don’t miss the artist’s reception this Friday from 6-8PM.

Click the Rocky Neck Art Gallery Banner above to go to the Gallery Website for details or the artist’s names to go to their sites.

Fun Fact from the gallery website: You have walked by 55 Rocky Neck a million times but did you ever wonder why the building looked like that? The Answer: Those shingles are Russian stamped steel painted with copper boat bottom paint.

Another Fun Fact: the name of their exhibit is “Ice Cold: Natural Extracts”.  Now if you were going to have a reception on a Friday night (6-8PM) in August with a name like that you might expect some nice cold natural extracts, maybe a pitcher of Margaritas or even martinis so cold you have those little flecks of ice floating on top? (Just thinking out loud here.)

St. Anthony’s by the Sea

This lovely little chapel of St. Anthony by the Sea (near Niles Beach) belongs to Holy Family Parish. It is open for Sunday services at 9:30AM only in the summer, and for weddings until the fall.  I think the stained glass windows are absolutely beautiful, real works of art.

For more about the history of the chapel, visit this link (thanks to Fred Bodin for the great info)!

Hour-Long Macklemore Concert Streamed Live

I was uploading a video this morning and found this link to an awesome Ben Haggerty concert, streamed live from New York City, with DJ Ryan Lewis.

Same Love starts around 12:30.

And the Winner is . . .

chocolate chip cookie mugup

There was intense competition this morning at the GMG Chocolate Chip Cookie Competition Mug Up.  Five excellent entries were received, which were blind tasted and judged by the attendees.  The runaway winning chocolate chip cookie was submitted by Alexandra’s Bread of Gloucester.  The 2nd place chocolate chip cookie was lovingly baked by Sue McDermott of Magnolia.  Paul Morrison was awarded Best in Show for the most artistic and creative cookies baked in the shape of a duck, set onto a boat of vanilla ice cream and surrounded by waves of whipped cream.  I didn’t get a shot of a completed presentation of Paul’s creation, so if anyone did, please send it in or upload it.  Other entries were submitted by Alicia Cox from Mamie’s Kitchen and a 2nd entry was submitted by Alexandra’s Bread

In my book, although all the cookies were excellent and I had a hard time picking the best one, my absolute favorite contribution to the morning was Al Bezanson’s schooner fare of crispy fried Spam and pineapple chunks.  It was just incredible.  I haven’t had Spam in probably 50 years, and have never it served like that.  True genious.  If I’m ever stranded on a deserted island, all I want is cans of Spam and pineapple chunks (and of course a can opener – it would be a total drag if I didn’t have a can opener).

Thanks to Donna & Rick Ardizonni for the fruit salad and whipped cream, Kathy Chapman for the fruit salad with yogurt, Gigi Mederos for making the coffee and bringing cookies, Alma McLaughlin for hosting in her beautiful back patio area and providing the doughnuts from Jim’s Bagel & Bake Shop, and all the others who brought contributions but I didn’t see who brought what, although I think Giclee James brought the blueberry muffins.

Another great Mug Up.

Origami hippopotamus!

This happy hippo is folded from a single sheet of paper following diagrams found in John Montroll’s “African Animals in Origami“.

John Montroll has published many books with a variety of topics. Two of his books – “Origami for the Enthusiast” and “Animal Origami for the Enthusiast” – were a huge discovery and inspiration for me when I was first developing my origami skills.

Like Robert Lang (a contemporary and collaborator of John Montroll), John is a very nice person, and very approachable. I see him at the origami convention every year in New York, and we always have a nice conversation (which, in the origami world, is kind of like a musician sitting down to have a nice chat with Vivaldi). Actually, all of the great origami designers I have met have been unpretentious.

I will be scheduling more origami classes soon at The Hive and Art Haven, I hope, but in the meantime I am also open to giving private lessons to groups or individuals. Comment on the post if you are interested.

Origami goldfish

Another bit of fishy origami, on my last day of vacation away from Gloucester…

This little goldfish is not as complicated as the horseshoe crab, but just as delightful to me.  It is designed by the same artist – Robert Lang – and is found in the same book as well, “Sea Creatures in Origami“, a collaboration between Robert Lang and John Montroll (another of my favorite origami designers).

Meet The Artist Reception At Aquatro Gallery For Artist Catherine McMurray

Catherine McMurray
Aquatro Gallery Kicks Off Cape Ann Ceramics Festival Weekend with Tennessee Artist Catherine McMurray’s Delightfully Sublime Pottery.
Artist Catherine McMurray’s Meet The Artist reception provides a chance to open the Cape Ann Ceramics Festival in style. Her greenware pottery has already been a big hit at Aquatro Gallery this season, as have been her gorgeous raku pots with natural fiber handles. McMurray will also be bringing new work for this event, raku platters, lamps and vases and other items in a beautiful radiant, dazzling glaze called Dolphin Blue.
Held in conjunction with the inaugural Cape Ann Ceramics Festival which serves to draw attention to the artists working in clay and porcelain across the Cape Ann region, this Meet The Artist event whets the appetite for month-long event anchored at the Cultural Center at Rocky Neck in East Gloucester, MA. McMurray’s work encompasses both those turned on the wheel and hand-built using a variety of glazes (most notably the MacKersie copper glaze). A native Vermonter trained at SUNY Potsdam, her Turning Grace Studio located outside of the Nashville area in Brentwood, TN has operated since 2000. This is Catherine McMurray’s appearance on Rocky Neck.

Origami horseshoe crab

At a cottage by the sea, I had to fold something appropriate!

This is my first try at Robert Lang’s origami horseshoe crab. Folded from a single uncut sheet of foil paper.  It would be better with brown paper, but I didn’t have the right kind on hand; foil was the strongest, thinnest paper I have with me right now on vacation…

It has a few challenging steps in it…
