The Writer’s Book Club at Duckworth’s Bistrot

Christopher Anderson writes-

Hi Joey,

I hope this finds you well. Can you help spread the word on a very special book club series happening this summer at Duckworth’s Bistrot?

Duckworth’s Bistrot and Eastern Point Lit House & Press are hosting a series of book club events featuring an exciting lineup of great writers coming by to hang out and lead a discussion about the books they love over fine wine (or beer) and fresh, seasonal appetizers. I’ll be kicking things off with my partner at Eastern Point Lit House, poet Jenn Monroe, on Sunday, May 26 (5:00 PM) with a discussion of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird. Tickets for our first meeting are $35 (includes wine/beer, food, and lively discussion), and are available now at www.easternpointlithouse.com. Seating is limited, so you don’t want to wait. It’s sure to be a great time.

Future authors include JoeAnn Hart (June 23), Tim Horvath (July 14), Anna Solomon (August 18), and Steve Almond (September 15). Tickets for these events go on sale soon.

Expect magic. Ken and I are aiming for nothing less. And to answer the question that is sure to be asked, the reason we’re not serving a full dinner is so Ken can participate in the discussion. You can bet the appetizers are sure to be nothing short of amazing, and the discussion even better.

Much gratitude for all you and your team do!

Cheers,

Chris

An Impressive Use of Origami

People do all sorts of neat things with origami.  Last October during my vacation in Paris, I saw this impressive use of origami in advertising at a Peugeot store on the Champs Elysees:

The origami involved is actually pretty simple; the genius of this display is the way the origami is arranged (and the sheer amount of folding involved!).

Do you want to do neat things with origami? Come to my next class at The Hive in downtown Gloucester, on May 23 at 7PM.

Speechless.

David Cox was there with the big camera and as he didn’t have two monkeys climbing all over him during the performance I’m guessing he’s gonna have some fantastic photos to share over the next couple of days.

An odd origami menagerie; upcoming origami class

I folded these stegosaurus, bull, mice, penguin, and Chinese dragon last night during “the Sing” at the Inn at Babson court.  The diagrams for the dinosaur and the bull are from the “annual collection” from the origami convention in New York City in 1991; the rest are from an origami book by Akira Yoshizawa.

I will teach another origami class at The Hive on Thursday, May 23.

Ribbon Cutting at The Center at Rocky Neck

center ribbon cutting

We’re lucky our Mayor isn’t an “off with their heads” kind of gal, or some people might be in trouble with those massive scissors she was wielding last night.

It was a wonderful celebration of the Center passing into the hands of the Rocky Neck Art Colony.  We now have a permanent home, and a space where everyone in the community can come together and enjoy a great diversity of programming.

If you haven’t yet been to the Center, you owe it to yourself to stop by and visit soon.  It is really a beautiful, warm and inviting space with lots of great things happening in it.   Visit http://mail.rockyneckartcolony.org/ to see what’s coming up.

Remember the “Super Moon”?

This was a year ago now… Time flies! A canvas giclĂ©e print of this shot will be for sale in the GMG section of EJ Lefavour’s gallery on Rocky Neck very soon. It was printed at Cape Ann GiclĂ©e, so the quality of the print is excellent.

The Passing of the Keys

passing of the keys

 Photos by E.J. Lefavour

It is now official.  The closing was at Deb Eliason’s office this morning and RNAC took ownership from Steve and Kathy Archer of the Center at Rocky Neck.  Join us this evening from 6:00-8:00pm for a ribbon-cutting/key-passing ceremony and celebration of this momentous event in the history of Rocky Neck.  A debt of gratitude is owed to Steve and Kathy Archer who made it possible for RNAC to conceive of accomplishing this major undertaking, and to Karen Ristuben and Karen Tibbets, who were the major driving forces behind its becoming a reality.  Kudos to all the RNAC members who have worked so hard this past year to help make this happen.

Chickity Check It! The Law and Water Gallery

image

Here above the tide, in America’s storied fishing port, the Law & Water Gallery shows provocative works by accomplished artists in mixed media, paint, ceramics, and photography.

The gallery brings together two bodies of art under one roof. The first has, as its starting point, the written and unwritten laws that shape society. The second centers around the body of water that surrounds and sustains our island.

These works offer fresh perspectives on law and justice, port and place, work and environment.

Located in the storefront law office of Ken Riaf on Gloucester’s Harbor Walk, the Law & Water Gallery is open on Saturdays and by appointment.

View the artists.

At the Friday May 10 meeting of the Gloucester Area Astronomy Club, physicist Gary Meehan will speak on the nation’s next generation of geosynchronous weather satellites, GOES-R.

Gary will give us a high-level "tour" around the satellite, and explain the various instruments that will fly on it. Gary will give particular emphasis to the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI), the flagship instrument on GOES-R, for which he is the lead systems engineer.

The new satellites will provide continuous imagery and atmospheric measurements of Earth’s Western Hemisphere as well as space weather monitoring. They will be the primary tool for the detection and tracking of hurricanes and severe weather, and will improve support for the detection and observations of meteorological phenomena that directly affect public safety, protection of property, and ultimately, economic health and development.

Gary has been a member of the GOES-R Ground Processing team for the past few years at Atmospheric and Environmental Research (AER) in Lexington.

GAAC meets at 8:00 on the second Friday of every month at the Lanesville Community Center in the Lanesville neighborhood of Gloucester. There is no charge. More information is available on their website, http://gaac.us and on their Facebook page, http://facebookcom/gaacpage
