Enjoying Life in Gloucester Mass
Lye a New Friend
I ran into Lye on the breakwater, he was fishing and enjoying a day off from work. We exchanged our immigration stories of why we came to the USA. His was far more dramatic than my own. I also found that as a Vietnamese Interpreter, I found that his English was far better than my Vietnamese. Lye a naturalized US citizen, like myself, passes on the benefits to his children, for his hard work. We cherish our heritage, but Love America.

DES Crowning–Celebrate with “Sopas”
Father “jim” Achadinha and Father Gene Alves and the Portuguese community commemoration of 13th Century Queen Isabella, who fed the soup to the starving peasants after the famine. The soup consists of Cabbage, beef and a tasty stew like sauce over bread.
For me it’s all about the juices, which has a hint of mint.

DES Crowning–The Procession to Church
The procession started at the DES Portuguese Club to Mr. and Mrs. Jose Diaz Ferreira (The 2015 Mordomo), and back to the church where Father “Jim” Achadinha , joined the procession up Portuguese Hill. The neighborhood pronominally Portuguese, they appreciated Father “Jim’s” participation in the procession waving and coming out to greet the procession of the Holy Ghost. The rain held off until everyone reached Our Lady of Good Voyage, the rain stopped briefly after the Holy Mass, and the procession headed towards the DES club to celebrate the Holy Ghost’s Traditional “Sopas” (Portuguese soup).
Below is a slide show of the Procession and the many who participated. Two colors are used in conjunction with the feast: RED and WHITE. Red symbolizes the tongues of fire, the form in which the Holy Spirit descended on the Apostles, and white symbolizes peace, purity and divinity.
Lennie Merullo finds David Cox
Lennie recently passed away at the age of 98 (May 5, 1917 – May 30, 2015), during his 50 years of scouting for the MLB, he found David Cox, see Newspaper clipping from Gloucester Times, stating that while scouting in the New England area. He had come to watch Gloucester’s Frankie Destino and Lynn English’s Johnny Hyde, but found in the midst David Cox.
“This Cox boy is a smooth operator, and looks like he can hit” said Lennie. “He’s a senior, you say? Looks like a good collge prospect to me. Has the arm, the speed and the power. One of the best boys I’ve seen this season”.
David continues to show his passion for sports through his photography of local Gloucester High School Sports, and published here on GoodMorningGloucester. David’s GMG Posts
DES Crowning 2015 Of Individuals
Father “Jim” Achadinha performed the Holy Spirit Mass, and presided of the crowning Ceremonies of Mr. and Mrs. Jose Diaz Ferreira 2015 ‘Mordomo”.
The Crowning of Individuals symbolizes that All are Equal, rich or poor, man or woman; and through the Holy Spirit are connected directly to God. Everyone has a personal reason to be individually crowned.
My mother each year was crowned on Pentecost and Trinity Sunday, each time a personal one. During my brother’s Vietnam Tour she asked for his safe return, I think for me, it was to stay out of trouble. These posts are made in her and my father’s memories.
