Tholepin

Thole or Tholepin
one of a pair of wooden pins set upright in the gunwale on either side of a rowing boat to serve as a fulcrum in rowing [Old English tholl]

Tholepin rhythm up the sound,
Leathern fingers grip eight foot oars,
Keen eyes watch along the shores
For bobbing bottles and wooden buoys
Carved with a name and a number that
Holds a tarred warp to a bedroom trap.
Drop and swish, then up the sound,
By noon to row the string around
Tholepin rhythm up the sound.

Great Weekend Weather!

Dusted off the old video camera and took some footage of the many people (and dogs) enjoying the great weather this weekend. We do live in a magical place with the ocean right at our door step. With spring so close it’s an exciting time on Cape Ann.

Soccer season is right around the corner…GOAL!

The spring sports season is right around the corner.

Love the eyes of this kid in the photo.

New Quarter Approved by Gov. Deval Patrick

The Gloucester Fisherman’s Memorial will be featured on a new Massachusetts quarter. Gov. Deval Patrick announced Thursday that the memorial received 245,000 votes from Massachusetts citizens on the state Web site.

Everyone is always in a hurry!

Time lapse photography taken with a Canon DSLR. A picture was taken every 2 seconds and when you put all the frames together this is the shot. If anyone has any interesting ideas for this type of photography, post a comment and I will try to put it together. Time lapse lends itself to things that are moving such as a construction site, stadium filling up, etc. Look forward to your comments.

Blue Lobster

This rare blue lobster was caught by Horace Lindberg Jr. (Dad) aboard the Brother II circa 1970’s. He gave it to the UMass Marine Biology Station in Bay View. They said the chances of “catching” this rare lobster was about 1 in 5 million. He had t-shirts mad up with the boat name and the slogan “one in 5 million”

Around one in two million lobsters is blue. A research study conducted by Professor Ronald Christensen at the University of Connecticutdiscovered that a genetic defect causes a blue lobster to produce an excessive amount of protein.[4] The protein, and a red carotenoidmolecule known as astaxanthin, combine to form a blue complex known as crustacyanin, giving the lobster its blue color.[5]

Funny, notice the pegs, haven’t seen those in a long time.

Cruiseport Gloucester

In keeping with the Cruiseport theme. Taken from the State Fish Pier showing the port at night. The lighting was done well and should provide nice illumination for boaters cruising the channel at night.

Wingersheek Beach Boardwalk

This photograph was taken at Wingersheek Beach. I used a technique called HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography. It takes 3 photos that have 3 different exposures and combines them into one HDR photograph.
