Baltimore Checkerspot Butterfly

This striking Baltimore Checkerspot was photographed last week in a field of Common Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca). The field is located in Ipswich’s town center.

Notice the Baltimore Checkerspot’s vivid orange antennal clubs and white and orange dotted abdomen. The caterpillar’s food plant, or host plant, is mainly turtlehead (Chelone glabra) in low lands and gerardias upland, e.g., Smooth False Foxglove (Aureolaria flava).

Baltimore Checkerspot (Euphydryas phaeton) Ventral

I find absolutely the most interesting creatures in fields where grows Common Milkweed, which tells us that the plant provides a wealth of nourishment for a diverse range of organisms.

Note: The underside of butterfly wings are referred to as ventral; the upper surface as dorsal. An easy way to remember the difference between the terms dorsal and ventral is to think of the dorsal fin of a dolphin.

Love and Other Anxieties Gloucester Premier

Save The Date

Filmmaker Event:  On Monday July 23, at 7:30 one of my dearest friends, Lyda Kuth, is showing her beautiful and touching film  Love and Other Anxieties at the Cape Ann Community Cinema. Lyda will be there to talk with the audience and answer questions. Many artists in our community know Lyda from her other role as an arts funder. She is the founding board member and executive director of the LEF Foundation.

Come say hello to Lyda and see her moving film. I’ll be there introducing Lyda and look forward to seeing you there! Click here for Advance Ticket Sales

Faced with the reality that her only child will flee the nest for college, film-funder turned filmmaker Lyda Kuth gets anxious not only about how her daughter will fare in today’s world of love and romance, but also about her relationship with her husband of 20 years.  What will life be like after her daughter leaves?  What is the real meaning of love, marriage, and long-term commitment?

Sunday Night at the Lobster Pool

View of Ipswich Bay from the Lobster Pool Restaurant Rockport

Sunday night we arrived at the Lobster Pool just as the sun was setting. By 11:30 that morning a line had formed out the door, yet despite this fact, we were greeted graciously and had a delicious dinner of (what else) Captain Joe’s lobster rolls.

WCVB Channel 5 Chronicle Gloucester Episode

As many are aware, tonight at 7:30, WCVB Channel 5 Chronicle is airing an episode featuring Gloucester. This is in and of itself is fantastic; they also borrowed a bit my footage from my Greasy Pole Sunday film that I created for Good Morning Gloucester.

http://vimeo.com/45105201

Special thanks are owed Joey for making Good Morning Gloucester the ‘go to place’ for people like Maggie Harper, the producer of Chronicle, to discover more about what makes the heart of our community beat. During the entire week of Fiesta, then followed by Independence Day events, GMG covered all, posting countless feature stories, schedule of events, photos, and videos.

Thank you Joey C for all you do for our fair city!

Behind the Scenes Look at What it Takes to Create the “Most Creative” Horribles Float

GMG was awarded the Horribles Parade “Most Creative” float. Sister Felicia’s design brilliantly combined her passion for cooking, her brother Joey’s GMG community-inspired blog, and the family’s lobster business.

The nine foot tall black enamelwear lobster pot was set upon a cooktop, replete with pot handles and temperature dials. Giant lobsters and lots of baby lobsters were seen in and around the pot and dry ice was used to simulate a steaming lobster pot. Teenage boys were also seen in the pot, supplied with all the Super Soaker ammo needed to squirt the entire parade route of attendees.

Joey’s Captain Joe and Sons truck pulled the float, and it housed the sound system, provided by Gimme Sound, featuring deejays Vickie Van Ness and ZipLine Kid.

What, or who, does it take to create the “Most Creative” Horribles Float? Here’s a behind the scenes look ~

Super-Star Sister Felicia ~ Creative, Talented, Passionate, Devoted to Her Family and Her Community, Unbelievably Amazing Organizer, and Divine Cook are just some of the attributes that best describe Sister Felicia.

Barry Mohan, Sister Felicia’s right-hand man ~ Always there to help in every way, and then some!

Neighbor Deanna and Mammaw working on a Homie costume ~ Always there to lend a hand, too. I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree…  -and, to add to the fun, Mammaw is especially gifted at telling a good joke.

Ed Collard of House Doctor’s Fame and Craig Kimberly–Ed is Sister Felcia’s “other” right-hand man, especially at float-building time of year.

Last Minute Finishing Touches

Not Only Did Felicia Design and Organize the Entire Float Project, she also prepared a fabulous tailgate dinner for all!!! In case you are wondering what Felicia prepared: Warm vats of pulled pork for sandwich making, a variety of cold salads, desserts, and an abundance of refreshments, including Felicia’s very popular Sangria.

Praise to Mayor Kirk and the City of Gloucester

The photo with the Man at the Wheel shows the Horribles Parade route, at 8:00 this morning, less than twelve hours after tens of thousands camped along the boulevard to view the parade and fireworks. The entire route is spectacularly clean as is the Fiesta fairgrounds. Thank you Mayor Kirk and the city’s public works departments for working so hard to keep our downtown looking sparkly clean during the back-to-back events of Fiesta and Independence Day celebrations!

Happy Fourth of July!

Video- 2012 Saint Peter’s Fiesta Opening Ceremony

Filmed at Friday night’s formal opening ceremony. After shooting the greasy pole contest  I raced back to my car, which was parked all the back to I4-C2, to lessen the load of tripod and video camera. I grabbed my still camera thinking I would only take snapshots. I wish I had kept the video camera with me, but attempted to shoot video with the Fujifilm x100. The x100 unfortunately does not have IS, or image stabilization, nonetheless the colors are good.

Greasy Pole Fall Classic Fundraiser 2011

In the autumn of 2011 the platform rigged in the harbor that supported the greasy pole was damaged first by Hurricane Irene, and then destroyed by a subsequent ‘noreaster. Roughly eighty thousand dollars was needed to reconstruct the platform. The Greasy Pole Fall Classic Fundraiser was held at Newell Stadium, and is a one time only re-creation of the annual event that is taking place this weekend. Gloucester’s St. Peter’s Fiesta is attended by tens of thousands and it is a beautiful celebration of St. Peter, the patron saint of fishermen. The Greasy Pole is a highlight of the fiesta, and just one of many religious and celebratory events.

Polyphemus Moth

Perhaps you may recall the photo of the wild silkworm cocoon posted back in April. I was becoming a little discouraged at the lack of activity and wondered if we should place the cocoon, which was housed in a terrarium and protected from the sun by our shaded porch, into full sun. My worries were for nothing because during the heat wave Thursday, sometime in the mid-morning hours, a gorgeous female Polyphemus Moth (Antheraea polyphemus) emerged from her cocoon.Female Polyphemus Moth (Antheraea polyphemus)

The Polyphemus Moth is so named because of the giant eyespots ringed with yellow, blue, and black on the hindwings. In Greek mythology Polyphemus is the one-eyed Cyclopes and son of Poseidon and Thoosa; the name means “much spoken of” or “famous.”

The Polyphemus Moth also has a pair of transparent spots on the forewings. Antheraea polyphemus is one of North America’s largest moths with a wingspan of four to six inches. Like the Luna Moth and Cecropia Moth, the Polyphemus Moth belongs to the Giant Silkworm Family or Saturniidae.

Male Polyphemus Moth (Antheraea polyphemus). Note the comb-like feathery antennae of the male, which are nearly double the size of the female. The large antennae can more easily detect pheromones released by the female.

I was hoping a female would emerge, knowing that she would release pheromones, which would attract a male. Thursday night we set up the terrarium outside in a sheltered area around back. The following morning, sure enough, I discovered a perfect male specimen clinging to the back door. They don’t fly very well when their wings are not warmed sufficiently so he was easy to capture. I placed him into the terrarium with the female. Her abdomen is bursting with eggs and she had already begun to deposit unfertilized eggs everywhere—on leaves, her old cocoon, and the glass walls of the terrarium. That night I woke up every hour on the hour to try to photograph their mating, but I don’t think a pairing took place.

She is continuing to deposit eggs each evening. Her abdomen is still quite swollen. I am keeping my hopes up that they will get it together so the male will fertilize her eggs and we can then rear the caterpillars! Both male and female emerge without mouthparts; they do all their eating in the caterpillar stage.

Where is the Fiesta Ferris Wheel?

Last year I overcame my Fear-of-Carnival-Equipment and took my first ride ever on the Fiesta ferris wheel. When I was a child I loved amusement parks. Fear-of-Carnival- Equipment is an affliction that strikes one upon becoming a mother. Nevertheless, at this time last year my camera was brand new and I was determined to take photos from the ferris wheel vantage point (and both kids had left for college and grad school).

I was disappointed to see that this year the ferris wheel was not set up along Pavilion Beach. According to carnival employee Bones, the ferris wheel was recently sold to a permanent park in Mexico because it was becoming too old for the frequent moves demanded of it from a traveling company. Although I will miss the gorgeous view of Gloucester from atop the ferris wheel I am glad they made this safety call. The good news is that the company is planning to purchase a new ferris wheel and hopefully it will be here next year!
