Red Shed Film Festival Organizers Michael Kelly, Henry Cooper, and Sarah Kelly
The Red Shed Film Festival had a tremendous turnout Saturday night. Festival organizers Henry Cooper, Michael Kelly, and Phil Hopkins were there hosting the screenings, and did a fabulous job running the event. I had a wonderful time and plan to participate again next year. Dining al fresco under the cherry trees on Wally’s Bistrot’s super delicious barbeque and Twin Lights soda just added to the fun.

For the next few nights, I’ll post several of my favorite films screened at the festival. Some may have played previously on Good Morning Gloucester, but would be worth seeing again. I hope you enjoy them as much as did I!
The first film, To Hear the Music: The Opus 139 Project by Dennis Larson, is a nine-minute trailer to the larger project of the same name, and features our own Greg Bover!
The Opus 139 Project is an independent documentary film that tracks the progress of design and construction of a new pipe organ for Harvard University’s Memorial Church, built by the C.B. Nick Taormina and I set 6 turtle traps today in some vernal pool habitat near where Blanding’s Turtles have been known to exist. In Gloucester on Essex County Greenbelt property. With permission from ECGB and MA Division of Fisheries and Wildlife. The idea is to see if we can find any Blanding’s. They are a Species of Special Concern in Massachusetts, and their presence could determine a Rare Specis Habitat.
WE NEED LOTS OF VOLUNTEERS FOR THE YARD SALE
As of now, we are going ahead with the sale this Saturday. By Friday evening we will make a decision. Yes or no. Rain date is the following Saturday.

Bring your donations to St. Peter’s Square at 7am on the morning of the sale. No TVs or computers please. We will need some volunteers to work at the sale too. And, we will have some stuff at our Magnolia office which will need to be moved from the office to the sale early in the morning on Saturday. How early? Depends on how many volunteers and trucks we get.

The day we planted blueberry bushes is the very same day the catbirds began to call our garden home. We now see Gray Catbirds (Dumetella carolinensis) throughout the seasons, devouring the seeds and fruit of holly, crabapple, winterberry, magnolia, blueberry, and shad. Their cat-like cries, which lends the species their common name, are welcome and often heard. Gray Catbirds are in the Mimidae Family and, like their relatives the Mockingbirds, also mimic the songs of other birds.
Although I have read that catbirds are shy, they seem relatively sociable in our garden and aren’t threatened by the presence of people within close proximity. We keep the bird baths filled with fresh clean water and I especially love to watch the catbirds from our kitchen window as they are so exuberant in their bathing habits–diving and splashing and then drying their wings at the edge of the basin. Oh Joyous Spring!

Could there be a more perfect venue to hold a bridal or baby shower on the North Shore than Willowdale Estate? In fairness, and as GMG readers are aware, I am the landscape designer for Willowdale, and completely unbiased. 🙂 The staff that works in the planning and production departments that create the events at Willowdale are so sweet, helpful, and capable; the home and gardens are meticulously cared for by James and his crew; and Executive Chef Ben Lightbody’s exquisite cuisine is beyond sumptuous.
Last Wednesday, Willowdale’s events planning and production team threw a beautiful surprise baby shower for their co-worker Sarah Boucher, Senior Sales and Marketing Manager. The color theme was a gorgeous soft buttery yellow with anthracite gray accents–ideal for the couple not sure whether their bundle of joy will be a boy or girl.

All good wishes and love to Sarah, Jeff, and their new baby daughter-on-the-way! We can’t wait to meet her!!!

Monarch Butterflies Nectaring at Pink New Enlgand Aster, Gloucester
Thank you so much to our most awesome community for participating in the Cape Ann Monarch Milkweed and Aster Project. Today was a huge and wonderful success and we were non-stop with folks dropping in to pick up their seeds and learn more about how they can help the Monarchs. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
And my most heartfelt thanks to Joey. He nudged me into doing the sale again this year by inquiring just about a month ago if we were planning a repeat of last year’s plant sale. Joey’s hospitality and interest in everyone who stops by makes Captain Joe’s a wonderfully fun place to have a community event!

Fun fact about butterflies: Butterflies do not grow fur. The fur-like structures that you see on butterflies are many single cells conjoined to form one long string.

In case you misplace the instructions on how to prepare your milkweed seeds for spring planting ~
Seeds of most temperate plants need to be vernalized—in other words, exposed to cold temperatures. The best way to vernalize is by stratification, which means subjecting seeds to a cold and moist environment for a short period of time. By stratifying, the seed’s natural break of dormancy that occurs when the seed spends the winter in the ground is simulated.
#1 Method of Stratifying Milkweed
Open the bag of seeds and place them between very slightly moistened paper towels in a plastic bag in the refrigerator. After vernalizing for 3-6 weeks, the seeds can be planted out in the garden in warm 70º soil.
#2 Method of Stratifying Milkweed
Place ¼ cup of sand mixed with ¼ tsp. of water in a plastic bag. Add the seeds and mix again. Store in plastic bag in the refrigerator. After vernalizing for 3-6 weeks, the seeds can be planted out in the garden in warm 70º soil.
Prepare the planting bed in a sunny location. Scatter seeds, or plant in rows, and cover with no more than ¼ inch of soil.
For natural vernalization, sow collected seeds directly into a prepared bed in the fall and the seed will germinate the following spring.

Rick Roth and I had a fun time at WGBH Radio this afternoon, with Jim, Emily and Will. Nice people, fun time.
We got the office furniture assembled. Thanks to Jean, Colleen, Anna, Tracy, John, Andrew, Jeff, Clayton, Nick, Melissa, Emily, Amber and Jessica. And thanks to Dierdre for the wonderful snacks.

We (CAVPT and Kestrel) are moving our office from 15 Lexington Ave. in Magnolia to 186 Main St. Gloucester in Brown’s Mall right across from the police station. The plan is to do this on Saturday, May 17th. We will need help with this. If you have a truck or a van, we could use that too.
