PEACHES RIPENING IN THE WARM SUN ~ DO I HEAR BELLINIS, ANYONE?
Today was simply a fabulous day, and it began very early with picking the first batch of ripe peaches from our peach tree. While washing the peaches, I turned to the large terrarium on our kitchen table and there were Monarchs galore beginning to emerge from their chrysalides. I had asked our gang of neighborhood kids if they would like to watch the butterflies as they emerge and help me with my film project and soon our home was filled with their wonderful selves. I’ll post the photos from our Monarch Day after the long weekend and don’t have time to get a new post together so here’s a favorite post from last year’s Schooner Festival/Labor Day weekend.
Reblogged from Kim Smith Designs September 2014
Our ‘Belle of Georgia’ peach tree never disappoints. Each and every year without fail, and always around Labor Day, this semi-dwarf white-fleshed peach tree gives us mouth-watering sweet peaches. Not all of the peaches are perfect and the ones that are not eaten out of hand are whipped into smoothies, cooked in confections, or macerated with Prosecco.
Bellinis make a festive addition to your Labor Day/Schooner Festival weekend brunch or dinner, especially at this time of year when the farmer’s markets and grocer’s shelves are brimming with tree-ripened fresh fruit.
Marinate peeled, pitted, and sliced (halved or quartered) peaches in Prosecco for several hours. Just before serving, puree the peach-Prosecco mixture. Spoon the puree into champagne glasses, about 1/3 to 1/2 filled, and to taste. Gently add more Prosecco to the puree. Add a drop of raspberry liquor, Chambord, or a few fresh raspberries to the puree, to give the drink that beautiful pinky-peach glow.
Bellinis are traditionally made with white-flesh peaches such as ‘Belle of Georgia,’ but any variety of sweet peach will do.
‘Belle of Georgia’ Peach Blossoms
In flower and in fruit, the peach is a pretty tree for your landscape ~

Prunus persica ‘Belle of Georgia’
Cultivated by the Chinese for thousands of years, the peach tree is grown for its fruit as well as for its exquisite flowers and gracefully shaped branches. To better understand the significance of the peach tree in the Chinese culture it is worth noting that the development of the Chinese garden with its ying-yang symbolism was essentially Daoist in origin.

BONNIE BONAPARTE’S GULLS!
While recording audio for film projects this past week I was wonderfully surprised to come upon this small flock of the beautiful and graceful Bonaparte’s Gulls feeding at low tide!.

The water was very clear and I think in the above photo you are seeing not the gull’s reflection, but its open mouth plunge for tiny shrimp.
Non-breeding plumage.
Bonaparte’s Gulls are exquisite creatures to observe. Appearing to delight in riding the waves, they twirl every which way before diving for krill.
In this flock you can see very clearly the changing feather patterns from breeding to non-breeding, with the signature charcoal gray smudge behind the ear on the gull on the left. Typically by mid-August they have gained their winter plumage. During breeding season the feathers of the hood become entirely black.
We see Bonaparte’s Gulls in Massachusetts in spring on their northward migration to the boreal forests of Alaska and Canada and again in the summer as they return to winter grounds along the Gulf of Mexico and southern Great Lakes region. I at first thought that these were Laughing Gulls but the pinkish-orange feet and legs and buzzy vocalizations tell us otherwise.
I ran into my friend and long-time Annisquam resident Hank Junker on Lighthouse Beach and he reports that every summer he sees at least one Bonaparte’s at Lighthouse Beach or the adjacent Cambridge Street Beach. Hank also mentioned that they are typically here earlier in the summer, around the first week of August.
Black wing-tips and pink-orange feet suggest Bonaparte’s Gulls
Ring-billed Gull in the background, Bonaparte’s in the fore.
The Bonaparte’s Gull is about half the size of the Ring-billed Gull. I have learned to observe closely groups of gulls because different species sometimes feed together and you never know what fascinating bird may be amongst the flock.
The gulls are finding a smorgasbord at dawn’s low tide, feeding on krill and other crustaceans. They get into tussles over feeding turf and, with a flourish of wings and a sharp, rasping “keh-keh,” they give each other the business, in no uncertain terms!

GOOD MORNING GLORIES BROUGHT TO YOU BY PLUM COVE GRIND!
Driving through Lanesville on my home from filming and the beautiful blue of ‘Flying Saucers’ caught my eye. I couldn’t resist taking a photo and circled back. Meredith Glaser, Plum Cove Grind proprietor, was just opening for the day and I couldn’t resist either her tempting blueberry oat scones. They were fantastic, chock full of blueberries and with a flaky texture, not at all glompy as is often the case with scones. Everything else on display looked very homemade and irresistibly delicious, too. I’ll definitely be back to sample more of Meredith’s yummy pastries.
Plum Cove Grind is located at 1064 Washington Street, Lanesville.
Closed Monday, Plum Cove Grind is open Tuesday through Sunday from 7:00 to 4:30pm. For more information visit their website at Plum Cove Grind.
Insights On Site at the White-Ellery House
Picasso’s Women – A one-day installation by Gabrielle Barzaghi
The Cape Ann Museum is presenting an installation of sketches by Gabrielle Barzaghi entitled The Picasso Women Visit the White-Ellery House, on Saturday, September 5 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This program will take place at the Cape Ann Museum’s historic White-Ellery House(1710) and is free and open to the public as part of Escapes North 17th Century Saturdays. The House is located at 245 Washington Street in Gloucester at the Route 128 Grant Circle Rotary; parking is available off Poplar Street in the field behind the house.
Gabrielle Barzaghi graduated from the Boston Museum School in 1978. She moved to Gloucester in the mid-1990s and has taught drawing as a Senior Lecturer at the New England School of Art and Design at Suffolk University in Boston for many years. She is a recipient of a Massachusetts Cultural Council grant for drawing and has participated in many invitational and group shows throughout the region. Her work has been shown at the Boston MFA, the Currier Museum, the Fuller Museum and the Cape Ann Museum.
Artist’s Statement: Many of my works spring from my imagination, while others are the result of close observation and drawing from life. Often my drawings are a mixture of both, with close observation in the past serving my visual memory in the present. The themes are of myth and transcendence.
The White-Ellery House has served as the backdrop for a series of one-day contemporary art installations (Insights On Site) for seven years running. It was built in 1710 and is one of just a handful of First Period houses in Eastern Massachusetts that survives to this day. Unlike other structures of this period, the largely unfurnished house has had very few interior alterations over the years. Stepping inside today, visitors enter much the same house they would have 300 years ago. The historic home is open on the first Saturday of the month from May through October as part of Escapes North 17th Century Saturdays.

Quarky Pants Junior!
Allowing me to get a little closer, perhaps one of these days (before he/she’s all grown up), I’ll catch a side-by-side of Black-crowned Night Heron parent and juvenile. Here he is standing on one leg, just as do mom and dad!
A little ways off was a Great Blue Heron also hunting amongst the reeds. I captured him in fight with my movie camera as he flew to the other side of the pond. Thanks to E.J., who was on a morning walk and pointed out the general vicinity to where he had landed, I was able to get another clip of the heron flying.
I am searching for quiet places to record harbor and shore sounds, away from the roar of the surf, as well as where boat and machine engines don’t muffle or drown out every other sound. Its harder than you may imagine especially because there can be little to no wind. If you know of a quiet place where you especially love to listen to the music of Cape Ann, please answer in the comments section or email me at kimsmithdesigns@hotmail.com. Thank you!
