Mayor Kirk gives a Shout Out to GMG on FNX this Morning!

Mayor Kirk with Mayor Dolan Mayor Kirk with Melrose Mayor Dolan

This just in from Mayor Kirk via phone on the way back to Gloucester from the FNX studio.

Fun contest today at wfnx – “My Song is better than your song – Battle of the Mayors”.
My
song choice went up against Mayor Rob Dolan of Melrose’s choice.  I chose the song “the Outsiders” by the band Needtobreathe.   He chose an fnx staple by Talking Heads and beat me badly.

But I was able to give a shout out to www.gimmesound.com and www.goodmorninggloucester.com and the great year round music scene here in Gloucester!

Way to Go Mayor Kirk!

2012 Rocky Neck Plunge Video shot by Peter Van Ness ~ Text of George Sibley’s Poem below:

Richard Gaines once told us that Peter and I are interchangeable,  so here is my post.

Vickie Van Ness, Ericka Hyam (raffle winner) & Mayor Kirk take the plunge with over a hundred others at noon on January 1, 2012 at Rocky Neck, Gloucester, MA

In keeping with tradition, George Sibley began the festivities with a poem, but it was hard to hear.  George was nice enough to give us a copy, so we could transcribe it here for those who missed it.  It’s a good one.

Another year has passed since we last
gathered on this shore;
Cathy has again directed me to discharge
this rhyming chore.

Even though of harbor water we’re about to
get a tankful,
The fact  we’re here with our fellows is itself
cause to be thankful.

To have our planet Earth, and upon it our
homes and lives;
Now we’re about to feel a wet chill which
both extinguishes and revives.

So as in the waters of this cove our last
year’s selves are smothered,
We have another year before us in which to
try to help others.

Rockport’s Greasy Pole

Yes, folks.  Rockport had a Greasy Pole.  We learned this from Jennifer Ober, Music Director of the Rockport U.U. Church while shooting Thursday’s gimmesound video.

Jennifer’s dad filmed this some time around 1930 and she was kind enough to put on a DVD so we share it with all of you.

As you can see this Greasy Pole is very different from Gloucester’s.  Does anybody remember Rockport’s Greasy Pole competition?  Was it part of a “Fiesta”?  When did it start?  Why did it stop?  What did they do with the pole during the winter?  (It looks like it’s on a float).
