SINGER/GUITARIST LARRY CARSMAN PERFORMS SUNDAY
JUNE 9 AT GIUSEPPE’S RESTAURANT IN GLOUCESTER
LC by Mara 12,08 072
Larry Carsman, master singer/guitarist whoĀ interprets songs from Springsteen to Segovia, performs Saturday night June 9 from 6-9Ā PM at Giuseppe’s Restaurant, on Main Street in Gloucester’s West End.

Carsman cofounded the James Montgomery Band in 1971. He also taught guitar to manyĀ local luminaries — including Livingston Taylor, Pete Kennedy (The Kennedys), Chuck
McDermott (Wheatstraw) and many others.

Since the mid 70s, Larry has focused on selecting and arranging a vibrant repertoire forĀ solo performance — drawn from traditional and modern jazz, blues, classical, Brazilian,Ā folk, soul and contemporary artists.

Live and on his 2009 solo debut CD Better Late, his warm vibrant voice blends
effortlessly with his nylon-strung classically fingered guitar. Larry’s influences and songs
span a rich diverse range of vintage and modern artists – Mose Allison, Josh White, B.B.
King, Buddy Guy, Big Bill Broonzy, John Coltrane, Lightning Hopkins, Miles Davis,
Bruce Springsteen, Blossom Dearie, Julian Bream, Carlos Jobim, Gilberto Gil and Luis
Bonfa.

Billy Novick, celebrated musician and producer of Better Late, says: ā€œLarry definitely
makes the songs his own. But because he has such a deep knowledge, respect and love of
so many different types of music, the songs are all genuine, soulful, and different…
There’s no loss of a song’s emotion or integrity when Larry performs it. In fact, the songs
become much richer, because of his imaginative yet nuanced interpretations.ā€

Best Bands in MA coming to Gloucester

It’s a revolution — a slow one. Ā Perhaps you haven’t even noticed. Ā In school we’re taught about revolutions as if they happen all at once. Ā But most of them don’t. Ā They take years. Ā One day, you look around and everything has changed. Ā It’s hard to notice the revolution when we’re in the middle of it. Ā That’s where we are now — in the middle of Gloucester’s music revolution. Ā Here’s how you can tell:

On Sunday, The Brew, recently named Best Band in New England by the New England Music Awards, will be at Minglewood. Ā One quick listen and you’ll know why they won.

Music on Sundays at Minglewood? Ā That’s right. Ā This Sunday 6/2 Minglewood Tavern launches a new night of music. Ā Let’s get down there and prove them right for adding another night to the Gloucester music revolution.

Next Saturday, Boston Magazine’s Best Local Band, Three Day Threshold plays The Rhumbline. Ā This band ROCKS and defies genre.Ā Ā Listen here. Ā They’ve also got a great sense of humor as evidenced by theirĀ Facebook description: “good country gone terribly terribly bad”.

If you look at their tour dates, you see they’re at Meadowbrook Pavilion, Middle East Downstairs (the big room) and the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville. Ā But YOU can see them at The Rhumbline without even crossing the bridge. Ā That’s revolution.

While you’re at it, check out tomorrow’s Rhumbline choice, Under Griffin’s Porch. Ā Here’s a prediction: It won’t be long before they win a Best Band award.

Gloucester’s music revolution is all around you. Ā Join in and have some fun!

Award-winning contemporary Celtic band, RUNA, comes to Old Sloop next Fri 6/7

poster-130607-crop-for-gmg

Check out the video featuring RUNA’s dynamic fusion of traditional & modern Celtic sounds — with dancing! Ā Remember, it’s the high-season. Ā Shows like this will sell-out, so you’d better get your tickets early — get them here.

It’s a rainy, two-show night in Gloucester

The way I look at it, a rainy night is perfect for music in one of Gloucester’s restaurants. Ā You’re not gonna fire up the grill. Ā Picnic on the beach? Ā Nope. Ā Dinner on the boat? Ā Fuggedaboutit.

Tonight you can catch two great shows. Ā Start at 7pm with local favoriteĀ John RockwellĀ featuring Dave Brown (one of the best guitarists alive today) at Alchemy (one of only 2 Gloucester restaurants with 4.5 stars on Yelp and Gloucester’s highest rated restaurant with music).

Then head over to Minglewood and rock out with Dennis Monagle, Ned Nugent and Mark Pelosi at 9pm.

Check out this video and you’ll know what I mean when I say rockin’

Local Producers Speak at Cape Ann TV’s Annual Meeting

Cape Ann TV is announcing it’s Annual Meeting on Tuesday, May 28 at 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Cape Ann TV studio, 38 Blackburn Center, Gloucester. Highlights of the meeting will include an overview of the station’s performance over the year, and presentations by local producers Allen Estes, Shaun Goulart, John Ronan, Kim Smith and Peter Van Ness. They will talk about their experiences as video producers and show clips from their shows. Refreshments will be served and all are welcome to attend.

The Tourists are coming. Are you ready?

For all the reasons Jim Dowd so entertainingly cites inĀ yesterday’s rant,Ā plus the fact that your personal livelihood might actually depend on them, it’s that time of year to welcome tourists to Gloucester — and be grateful they’re coming.

VisitorCenterThe Gloucester Visitor’s Welcoming Center opens tomorrow at Stage Fort Park and Kathie Gilson, who runs it, has invited everyone who’s business supports Gloucester’s visitor economy to attend the opening reception at 5pm. Ā Bring your brochures to display at the Visitor’s Welcoming Center for the season.

You might also want to check your listing on GloucesterMA.com, the City’s official visitor website. Ā Everybody knows that the Web is the number 1 source of information for visitors and GloucesterMA.com is Gloucester’s #1 tourism website. Ā It’s the top Google result for nearly every Gloucester tourism related phrase (hotels, inns, restaurants, etc.) and many local businesses report that GloucesterMA.com is their number 1 source of referrals after Google. Ā It’s a free service offered by the City, so you might as well take advantage of it. Ā If you need any changes to your listing, or it’s not there or you notice anything that’s incorrect, click here and explain the situation. Ā It will be taken care of quickly.

Ray Manzarek from The Doors died Monday

Ray ManzarekĀ died MondayĀ in Rosenheim, Germany. The keyboardist, who was a founding member of The Doors, lost his battle with bile duct cancer. He was 74. Ā Both drummer John Densmore and guitarist Robby Krieger have spoken up about the loss, and while doing so, remembered Doors frontman Jim Morrison, who died in 1971.

New gem from the heart of Gloucester’s most prolific songwriter says it all

Check out this video of Allen Estes’ new song, “We All Fall Down”, which premieres on his show Local Music Seen with Allen Estes tomorrow (WED) at 6:30pm on Cape Ann TV Channel 12. Ā Allen had been working on this song before the marathon bombing, which gave the song a more profound meaning closer to what we’re all feeling right now. Ā If this song doesn’t move you, nothing will.

In this special show, Allen is his own guest and sings four new songs and one older one from his Nashville writing days. Ā He ends with one of my new favorites, “Swimming” or “The Good Harbor Beach Song” — a perfect way to get into theĀ Cape AnnĀ Summer spirit!

More Allen Estes videos here (including Swimming)

Miranda Russell performs at the Shalin Liu Performance Center

Miranda Russell performs at the Shalin Liu Performance Center in Rockport on Friday and Saturday May 24th and 25th, 8 PM. Miranda and her 6-piece band will play an eclectic repertoire from standards to Americana folk/rock. Familiar to Cape Ann audiences from her many appearances at Gloucester Stage Company, Miranda has played at the Shalin Liu for the past two years, selling out the house. Hailed by critics as a sensational nuance performer, “Russell will knock your socks off, should you be wearing any this close to the beach” (BostonĀ Phoenix).

Here is Maranda Russell’sĀ wonderful cover of Paul Simon’s Graceland. Ā She and her band really make this song their own. Ā Watch and seeĀ what we mean. Ā You can catch her at Shalin Liu, where this was filmed, with the same band this weekend. Ā Ā Get Tickets Here
