My View of Life on the Dock

Nine years ago today, my dad, Ed “Pee Wee” Lowe, passed away. He was a Gloucester firefighter when all the wharf fires and huge hotel fires happened. He was small, yet feisty. He had a love/hate relationship with the Red Sox, collected everything, owned the Hesperus Bottle Shop in Magnolia, and beat me in every single pingpong game we ever played. The old firemen remember him. One cool guy. This was one of his favorite prints. Sure do miss him. —-Sharon

Adam, this week’s winner, wrote “I grew up on and in Walker Creek and kind of know it like the back of my hand. I recognized the short dock right away, but it’s always funny how a telephoto pulls in the background. It took me a little while to convince myself.” He does gorgeous photography at Tragabigzanda.
He wins a gift certificate from Audrey’s Flower Shop. A big thank you to Heather Peterson! Congratulations, Adam!
For those of you who don’t know where Walker Creek is, it’s at the corner of Sumner and Concord Streets in W. Gloucester. Nice bike ride if you can handle the hills. And remember your camera!
Adam identified the location of the Where Zat? contest as Walker Creek in West Gloucester. Congratulations Adam! I’ll post the full photo later in the day. —–Sharon

This has been so much fun! Last week’s location was the Dog Bar (one of my favorites!). Gloucester native, Joanne Silva won a $25 gift certificate to the Dogtown Book Shop. Thanks again to Bob Ritchie for donating the prize.
The Where Zat? #9 winner will receive a $20 gift certificate from Audrey’s Flower Shop. Just in time for Valentine’s Day! Owner Heather Peterson wanted me to tell you that the shop is selling a dozen red roses for $70. That’s less than $6 a rose!
Good luck on this week’s contest!
Watch for Where Zat #9 at noon today!!

Maybe someone can explain why grown men have this secret desire to dress up in women’s clothing. A couple of drinks brings them out of the closet and onto the street! Ah, Fiesta!

A couple of summers ago, in the yard of the railways on Rocky Neck, the Rosalie, barnacled and rusted with curtains blowing in the wind, looked ghostly. You almost could feel the spirits within.

Sen. Bruce Tarr keeps up with the cut-throat bidding with Joey nervously pacing the floor. All in vain, though. The bidding went too high, and Joey went home buoy-less. So sad.

You can see how attached this little one is to her art work. When it came time to put her buoy up for bid, she just couldn’t let it go.

Received this info from David Brooks-
ART HAVEN ART SHOW
2009 Programs Fundraiser
Dear Friends,
On January 30th, Cape Ann Art Haven will be conducting its first ever Art Show and fundraiser. For the last 6 months, Art Haven has been offering art lessons after school in the heart of down town Gloucester. During this time, our Main St. studio has been a headquarters for young artists to meet and develop friendships. Many of the children we serve have trouble expressing themselves through conventional extra curricular activities, such as sports. Art Haven is a place where children can be proud of what they can accomplish. Since our opening, all staff at Art Haven have been volunteers, and have occasionally paid for the supplies for fun projects out of their own pockets. Proceeds from the art show will contribute to funding for this new year, and we, as well as all the children who take classes at Art Haven, are looking forward to displaying the artwork they have created.
This will be a great time to meet those who are involved in Art Haven. There will be buffet dishes donated by many Gloucester Restaurants (Lat 43, Thai Choice, Azorean, Sebastian’ Pizza, Jalapenos, Chili Choice and more…), as well as a cash bar. Also, Senator Bruce Tarr will be auctioning off painted buoys from this years lobster trap Christmas tree. We hope to see you there! Tickets are only $5.00!! Be there at 6 pm.

One of my favorite places in Gloucester to unwind – car, bike, or on foot. —Sharon
Joanne Silva was the first person to identify the location of this week’s photo as the Dog Bar (with a little help from the clue!). She wins a $25 gift certificate from the Dogtown Book Shop. Thanks, Bob! And congratulations, Joanne!
If you are a business owner and would like to donate a prize for Where Zat?, just let Joey or me know. It’s free advertising and a lot of fun!
Watch for next week’s contest on Monday at noon! And remember if you have kids, visit my blog Flapping like a Haddock !
Okay…looks like you need a clue…
Fill in the blanks: lucky_________ chocolate________
Put the 2 words in the blanks together and you’ll have the answer!
Example: Plymouth (Rock) car (port) would be Rockport.
Have fun!

Last week’s winner was Zanny from Maine. She received a gift certificate from the Black Swan. Congratulations again!
Zanny wrote,” …I knew taking the Short Cut through that cemetery and checking out every single headstone would pay off some day! I’d like to thank My Mom, for telling me not to do that. Mrs Leslie Harris, my 4th Grade Teacher, who taught all of us Essex Kids a very detailed History of Essex, Joey, for making a fun blog to check into every day, and my neighborhood kids, for thinking that John Wise’s Grave looks like Aslan’s Table…”
This week the prize is a $25 gift certificate from Bob Ritchie at the Dogtown Book Shop, 132 Main St. downtown. All sorts of books…used and unusual. The shop reminds me of the old Magnolia Library. It’s very cool. Thank you, Bob!
Good luck everyone!
