Nepal’s first elephant refuge is Gloucester based- Direct Aid Nepal

“Donna Marshall Founder of Direct Aid Nepal has just finished building corrals for the elephants of Sapana which will serve as the first refuge site for the elephants who reside here. We have built toys in the corrals, created a watering system for the elephants, new showers for the caretakers of the elephants, painted rooms, the buildings and a general clean up of the property that the elephants will call home until we finish the new refuge.  Ms. Marshall has been an advocate of elephants in the United States and in Nepal. This year Direct Aid Nepal provided the support to retire the first residents of the refuge, the foundation also sponsored the first foot care program at Sapana by Carol Buckley. Direct Aid Nepal will be the umbrella organization for this initial startup.  Located in the United States it is fully registered Non-Profit 501 3 c.”

City Hall gleaming floors | DPW steadfast support for Gloucester’s culture

Spectacular City Hall, Gloucester’s cultural landmark and active municipal building, has nearly reached its 150th milestone at 9 Dale Avenue. Rising from the ashes, construction began in 1870 after the Gloucester fire of 1869 consumed its short-lived precursor. Gridley J.F. Bryant & Louis P. Rogers, leading architects at this time, were awarded the commission. Massive disaster response came two years later: the Great Boston Fire wiped out scores of Bryant designed buildings and the firm was awarded a significant percentage of its own rebuilds.

City Hall  was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973… which means the research and preparations leading up to that designation timed with its centennial birthday.Recently the expansive floors in Kyrouz Auditorium were buffed and polished and not for the first time.  150 years! Imagine all the footsteps and the generations of staff and volunteers that have cared for this building and community.

Credit DPW for their professionalism and kindness, and steadfast support for the city’s culture. Note their extra caution for protecting heritage from airborne material: mural and portraits were covered.

Don’t you love happy news! Virginia Lee Burton’s actual studio was saved and painstakingly and faithfully rebuilt and relocated to its new permanent home at Lanesville Community Center, Gloucester, Ma, with the help of many. “The rebuilding process of the Virginia Lee Burton (VLB) writing cottage has started with the much-needed help of volunteers, a Community Preservation Act (CPA) grant from the City of Gloucester, private donations and corporate donations from Dore and Whittier of Newburyport, MA, DMS Machine and Fabrication of Barre, VT and the Gloucester Building Center.”

Shelburne Falls and Lowell Named “Great Places in America”

The American Planning Association selected Lowell and Shelburne Falls as two of their 15 “2018 Great Places in America.” This honor distinguishes the neighborhoods, streets, and public spaces that make communities stronger and bring people together through good planning. The APA says that the awardees “illustrate how a community coming together creates lasting value.”
 
Congratulations to the two Mass Cultural Council-designated cultural districts – Lowell’s Canalway Cultural District and Shelburne Falls Cultural District – and their cultural communities!

Mark Feeney highlights the Cape Ann Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts in the Boston Globe Sunday Arts Museum Specials edition because of  concurrent spectacular and rare exhibitions: Winnie the Pooh Exploring a Classic opened September 22 and continues through January 6th, 2019 at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston;  Virgina Lee Burton “The Little House: Herstory” opens November 3rd at the Cape Ann Museum in Gloucester and continues until March 31, 2019.

Mark Your Calendars! Here are Cape Ann Museum art shows inspired by children’s literature on display now, upcoming and not to miss:

  • Harrison Cady exhibition continues through November 9th retrospective of a dazzling Golden Age of Illustration legend, cartoonist and fine artist 
  • Virginia Lee Burton exhibition The Little House: Herstory opens November 3rd  Burton resided and worked in Gloucester, Mass., where she created some of America’s most popular and seminal children’s books. She received the Caldecott medal in 1943 for The Little House. Other books include Katy and the Big Snow and Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel. She is renowned for her influential work as a Folly Cove textile designer and founder. Cape Ann Museum is the biggest repository of her art and archives. This 2018 survey will be gorgeous!

If you time it right there is a window of overlap where you can visit both the Harrison Cady and Virginia Lee Burton exhibitions.

  • A group show celebrating Cape Ann Reads new original children’s picture books by local artists and writers will open in January

“Barr-Klarman Foundations team up on 25 million arts initiative” Boston Globe October 3, 2018 

Cape Ann Museum received $375,000 Barr-Klarman investment funding in recognition of its stellar contribution to arts and culture in Massachusetts. The Barr Klarman Arts Initiative will disperse 25 million to 29 arts organizations; Cape Ann Museum is one of 3 North of Boston recipients.

I grabbed a couple Halloween nail polish strips for my goddaughters from Amy Newell’s booth at the Magnolia sip n shop. One of them glows in the dark! I think they’re great for a sleepover or party treat. Applying them is half the fun and easier than doing your own nails. Fine art fingers: some of the applications inspired  original combinations of colors and textures.

Grand opening coming soon for a new business in Magnolia- the All Purpose Flower Shop  29 Lexington Avenue, Gloucester, Ma.

There are no florists in Manchester or Magnolia so this is a welcome addition. Owner Linda Brown set up a booth at the Magnolia Sip n Shop with autumnal dried and silk arrangements. Donna Ardizzoni visits with Sharon at the October 12, 2018 sip n stroll in Magnolia. Her booth featured some of her favorite motifs and vistas. Donna works with Cape Ann Giclee to print and mount her photographs on various matrices, and for her gift cards. She appreciates the quality. “I mean look at this,” she exclaimed pointing to the rack of cards, “How great is the service for photographers: the cards include custom labels on the back, envelopes and plastic sleeves!”

The Little House: Herstory comes home to Gloucester. I can’t wait to check out Cape Ann Museum’s new Virginia Lee Burton show!

Model of Little House is back from the major Virginia Lee Burton survey in Japan (see photos from the installation)   

from the museum: “2017 marked the 75th anniversary of the publication of the children’s book The Little House, written and illustrated by Virginia Lee Burton (1909–1968). In recognition of that milestone, for the past two years the Cape Ann Museum has been pleased to collaborate with Gallery A4 at the Takenaka Corporation in Tokyo, Japan, creating an exhibition exploring Burton’s extraordinary career and legacy. The Sawyer Free Library in Gloucester, the University of Minnesota, the Burton-Demetrios family and the Tokyo Children’s Library also contributed to the project. The exhibition that resulted from this partnership featured archival material and a model of the little house at the center of Burton’s story. After being on display at Gallery A4 the exhibition traveled to a handful of other venues around Japan including Spiral, a multi-purpose cultural center in Minami-Aoyama. The exhibition was greeted enthusiastically by large crowds at each site. Now, a year later, the model of Virginia Lee Burton’s Little House that was at the center of the exhibition is on its way to America where it will soon be on display at the Cape Ann Museum.”

Creative and exciting programs are planned for the Burton exhibition. There is an inspired pre-exhibition warm up heralding Folly Cove designers:

“Please help us to get the word out in any way you can.
Due to predicted rainy weather on Saturday the first Gloucester Invitational, a classic car show hosted buy the Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation, has been moved to our rain date:  Sunday, October 14th. Please note the time of the show on Sunday:  from 1:00 to 5:00pm. Set-up and car arrival on the green is between noon-1:00pm. The Sunday show retains the same festivities:  live Dixieland music by ‘John’s Giddy Gang,’  delicious chowders and lobster rolls by the Causeway Restaurant, and hourly tours of the historic Meetinghouse with a demonstration piece on the 1893 pipe-organ.Trophies in 9 categories based upon the audience voting will be given out in an award ceremony at 4:30pm.”
