Cape Ann Museum received $375,000 Barr-Klarman investment funding in recognition of its stellar contribution to arts and culture in Massachusetts. The Barr Klarman Arts Initiative will disperse 25 million to 29 arts organizations; Cape Ann Museum is one of 3 North of Boston recipients.
I grabbed a couple Halloween nail polish strips for my goddaughters from Amy Newell’s booth at the Magnolia sip n shop. One of them glows in the dark! I think they’re great for a sleepover or party treat. Applying them is half the fun and easier than doing your own nails. Fine art fingers: some of the applications inspired original combinations of colors and textures.

There are no florists in Manchester or Magnolia so this is a welcome addition. Owner Linda Brown set up a booth at the Magnolia Sip n Shop with autumnal dried and silk arrangements. Donna Ardizzoni visits with Sharon at the October 12, 2018 sip n stroll in Magnolia. Her booth featured some of her favorite motifs and vistas. Donna works with Cape Ann Giclee to print and mount her photographs on various matrices, and for her gift cards. She appreciates the quality. “I mean look at this,” she exclaimed pointing to the rack of cards, “How great is the service for photographers: the cards include custom labels on the back, envelopes and plastic sleeves!”
The Little House: Herstory comes home to Gloucester. I can’t wait to check out Cape Ann Museum’s new Virginia Lee Burton show!

from the museum: “2017 marked the 75th anniversary of the publication of the children’s book The Little House, written and illustrated by Virginia Lee Burton (1909–1968). In recognition of that milestone, for the past two years the Cape Ann Museum has been pleased to collaborate with Gallery A4 at the Takenaka Corporation in Tokyo, Japan, creating an exhibition exploring Burton’s extraordinary career and legacy. The Sawyer Free Library in Gloucester, the University of Minnesota, the Burton-Demetrios family and the Tokyo Children’s Library also contributed to the project. The exhibition that resulted from this partnership featured archival material and a model of the little house at the center of Burton’s story. After being on display at Gallery A4 the exhibition traveled to a handful of other venues around Japan including Spiral, a multi-purpose cultural center in Minami-Aoyama. The exhibition was greeted enthusiastically by large crowds at each site. Now, a year later, the model of Virginia Lee Burton’s Little House that was at the center of the exhibition is on its way to America where it will soon be on display at the Cape Ann Museum.”

Update from Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation:
“Please help us to get the word out in any way you can.
Due to predicted rainy weather on Saturday the first Gloucester Invitational, a classic car show hosted buy the Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation, has been moved to our rain date: Sunday, October 14th. Please note the time of the show on Sunday: from 1:00 to 5:00pm. Set-up and car arrival on the green is between noon-1:00pm. The Sunday show retains the same festivities: live Dixieland music by ‘John’s Giddy Gang,’ delicious chowders and lobster rolls by the Causeway Restaurant, and hourly tours of the historic Meetinghouse with a demonstration piece on the 1893 pipe-organ.Trophies in 9 categories based upon the audience voting will be given out in an award ceremony at 4:30pm.”
Information labels were applied to City Hall walls with an epoxy that is ill advised near art. In early spring a label for this Ken Gore painting migrated to its surface and pulled away a small patch of paint. Elizabeth Mehlin, an expert painting restorer in Ipswich, Massachusetts, repaired the accidental damage. She was able to tease out pulverized pieces of the paint stuck to remnant epoxy and match the loss so beautifully the fix is indiscernible. The painting is large and heavy. I suspect that its original custom frame was likely carved by multi media artist and Montserrat teacher, Alfred Czerepak (1928 – 1986). Gloucester’s Department of Public Works are such great stewards of the city’s art and history!
KENNETH (KEN) GORE
(American, b.Oct 2 1911 Elvira, Illinois -1990 d. Gloucester)
Ken Gore visited Gloucester for the first time in 1948 and settled into a home and studio within a year. Eventually he purchased 186 East Main Street where he resided and maintained a studio and gallery. (Today it’s Lynzariums, aka the Plant Shack, across from Beacon Marine Basin in East Gloucester.) Gore was a student and art professor at the Detroit Meisinger Art School. He served as president of both Rockport and North Shore Art Associations and for the Cape Ann Festival of the Arts. He performed regularly with the Cape Ann Symphony. He taught regularly. Apparently his personality was as joyous and musical as his painting: his art students and friends considered him “one of the nicest mans they’d ever met.” I’ve heard that his plein air road trips and truck “studio” were quite a sight. I would love to see a picture of him on location by his truck. I do love seeing Jeff Weaver and his signature truck around town.

Sunday matinee, Silent Horror Movie with Organ Accompaniment – Sunday, October 21st, 2018, 3:30pm in the historic 1806 Gloucester Meetinghouse
MAESTRO OF THE PIPE-ORGAN RETURNS
As Halloween approaches, maestro of the pipe-organ and sonic artist Peter Krasinski returns to the Meetinghouse to accompany the scary silent movie ‘Waxworks.’ As in past years, Peter will perform on the sonorous 1893 Hutchings-Fisk organ to the delight of the audience, young and old. A short film, featuring Douglas Fairbanks, called the ‘Electric House’ will open the show.
HIGHLIGHTS
‘Waxworks’ is a 1924 German horror-fantasy film (Das Wachsfigurenkabinett) directed by Paul Leni. The plot is about a poet hired by the owner of a wax museum in a circus to write tales about Harun al Raschid, Ivan the Terrible and Jack the Ripper. While writing, the poet and the daughter of the owner, Eva, fantasize the fantastic stories and fall in love for each other. Its a thrilling horror movie for the whole family to enjoy.

LOCATION
The Meetinghouse, home of the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church, is located on the green at the corner of Middle & Church Street. Accessible side entrance is at 10 Church Street with an elevator to the Sanctuary level. Parking on the green is allowed.
The stands were brought back and moved into place atop the improved footing at New Balance Newell Stadium. Maybe the bleachers will be ready later this week. It’s great to see it coming back together.
On a gray day the tide revealed a dead adult seal about 6 feet long and weighing hundreds of pounds on the Gloucester side of Long Beach near Cape Ann Motor Inn. (I have not seen a dead adult seal on this beach in 12 years.) Unlike dead seal pups torn open and attracting gulls, there are no visible markings on its exposed sides and the body remains undisturbed. There is one faint thin red line in the sand.
Construction along Thatcher road and its new marsh walkway to Good Harbor Beach continues. The guard rail replacement is underway with a wood element coming soon. The access breaks caught my eye.
Mary Rhinelander’s resonant show, Collective (un) Conscious, at Gallery 53 on Rocky Neck continues through October 14, 2018. The exhibition, a power packed installation of 12 x 12 mixed media panels, is as much about visual engagement and observation for the viewer as it’s chronicling an individual, accumulated and reflective life. There are plenty of unexpected juxtapostions, dark narratives, quirk and humor. Rhinelander has a sharp eye.

Cape Ann Artisans are part of a vibrant arts community along scenic North Shore of Massachusetts. Open Studio Tours are self-guided of artists’ studios in Gloucester and Rockport, important Massachusetts designated Cultural Districts. Tours are 1st weekend in June and Columbus Day Weekend.
The Manchester Historical Museum opens the first major solo museum exhibit of Manchester based artist, Marion Hall, October 5th, 2018 with an artist’s reception from 6:30-8:30PM. The show features recent watercolors and will be on view through November 10. The museum is located at 10 Union Street, within the historic Trask House (1823), Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts.
