On Saturday January 15th, from 8pm to midnight, join author, radio personality, and paranormal investigator Ron Kolek and members of the New England Ghost Project for an investigation of Inn Magnolia. The elegant mansion has a history of unusual occurrences and many visitors have witnessed strange events.
Sign up for this special event and you will become part of the NEGP team as they attempt to collect evidence of paranormal activity at the inn. An initial investigation on Halloween revealed that the spirits there were more than willing to communicate but reluctant to disclose their true identities. Who haunts the inn? Is it one of the former residents, a sailor looking for a lost love, a struggling artist, an ailing child? Or is it something more sinister?
Join Ron and the rest of the NEGP crew for an unbelievable night as they and you attempt to unravel the mystery of Inn Magnolia. The price of this investigation is only $60 and space is extremely limited, so sign up today at www.neghostproject.com/magnolia.htm or for more information call 978-455-6678.
Overnight accommodations are available from the Inn for $20 off the already very low winter rates. Call 978-525-3642 or go to http://www.innmagnolia.com for room reservations.
Inn Magnolia – 18 Norman Avenue – Gloucester, MA 0193

Last month Kathy Chapman, a new RNAC member and resident of East Gloucester, introduced herself to the area by offering her photographic portrait experience to the community. Judith Monteferrante volunteered the use her new digital photo studio for the event and the rest is history. Fifteen artists were photographed by Kathy and Judith, with more expressing interest for the next session, taking place in the spring.

Kathy is currently accepting portrait, event and wedding jobs, as she works out of her studio on Gloucester Harbor. Her online portfolio has samples of 30 years of work, made while she was based in Boston’s Fort Point. Most of the portraits of artists and musicians (among others) were shot on assignment and published widely in national and international news venues. http://www.kathychapman.com.
Judith is a fine art and portrait photographer out of Gloucester as well as travel locations, including Africa. See her work at Topside Grill until January 15 and State of the Art Gallery in Gloucester. See her new website at http://www.judithmphotography.com.

Kim Smith writes-
Dear Gardening Friends,
During inclement weather, particularly when it is blizzarding, please don’t forget to knock the snow off, and clear the base around, your feeders. This afternoon while working on a drawing and looking out onto the snowy backyard scene I observed a half dozen species of our feathered friends searching for food at the bird feeders and in the fruit-bearing shrubs. The fearless Black-capped Chicadees, with cheery birdsong chic-a-dee-dee-dee, have their amusing habit of darting in for a seed and skedaddling away as quick as can be to crack it open against a firm surface. Particularly sweet was a cardinal pair. They took turns at the feeder; while one was eating, the other was always close by and at the ready with a warning cry.
A question from one of my dear readers:
Dear Kim, Last summer a male cardinal sang his heart out every day from the tree tops around our house. I thought he must be calling for a mate, but I never saw him with a female at all. Then the most curious thing happened: he began to perch on either my or my husband’s side mirror on our cars. He would peck away at the mirror and flap his wings. It was then that I concluded that he was desperate for a mate. This fall and winter, a male and female have appeared. There is a male (maybe the same one) that has started perching on my car mirror again. Since it is December/January, and if it is the same cardinal who now has a mate, it may have nothing to do with trying to find a mate. If you have any ideas, let me know.

If you thought I was psychotic about bringing you the best of Gloucester the guy from Hamilton Wenham Patch makes me look downright disinterested, lol.
Robert Gates should be running a newspaper for sure.
Joey,
Still more New Year’s Day highlights — this time a video of the plunge, produced by Sean Reardon of North Andover, a fan of the Blue Shutters Dips (his mom, Kim, was the Dip in the pink swimsuit). As news of this event has spread among friends (it as just highlighted in our Blue Shutters newsletter) a bunch more are promising to sign up for next year. Why wait ’til January — how about a Saint Pats plunge or an Easter Day Dunk? We may do a morning-after splash after our Chili Cookoff on February 12. It may not be a beach in the Carribean, but we think more and more folks are realizing Good Harbor in the winter definitely doesn’t suck! But those shots from the tropics sure look great.

“Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage.”
Anais Nin (1903-1977)
Born in France to artistic parents of Cuban descent, Nin spent her entire life plumbing the depths of her own psyche and recording her explorations in detailed journals. From the thirties through the fifties, with literary luminaries Henry Miller, Lawrence Durrell, Gore Vidal and others, she defined the open bohemian lifestyle. While perhaps best known for her female erotica, Delta of Venus and Little Birds, her seven volume Diary of Anais Nin contains extensive self study. "We don’t see things as they are; we see them as we are."

Coming
soon to Burnham’s Field: Fresh tomatoes and cucumbers?
Would
you like to grow your own cucumbers or tomatoes but don’t have a sunny spot to
do it? Burnham’s Field is the largest green space in central Gloucester.
A community garden at Burnham’s Field would allow Gloucester residents to
grow fresh, healthy vegetables or flowers of their choice and save money
on their shopping bills. Gardeners will be able to have their own plots and
share growing tips with other gardeners.
Plans
are now underway. The garden could open this spring if enough people are
interested. Plots will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.
If
you are interested in having a plot in the Burnham’s Field community garden,
please contact me at jmcelhenny@gmail.com

Hey Joey – While you’re down there with your family in the southern sunny warmth, my wife Martha, daughter Marie and I came upon this chilly photo opportunity at Good Harbor Beach yesterday afternoon (Sunday). The tide had just turned, there was a brisk wind keeping the walkers and dogs to a minimum, and the upper beach was covered in snow. It would be good for a GMG caption contest….
A few possibilities: "Survivor (casualty?) from New Year’s Polar Bear Dip at Good Harbor"; or "Good Harbor sunbathing – clothing optional in January"
I’m sure you and your readers could come up with some more captions.
