GMG Questions and Answers- Dawn Gadow

Dawn is the Director at Art Haven among many other things and is now part of the Block Party Committee!

How long have you lived in Gloucester?  Well, I’ve lived here for about a year. But I also lived here for the summer of 2008 and I think that’s when I knew I belonged. And I’ve worked here for almost two years.

What is your favorite season In Gloucester?
You can’t beat the summers downtown – the long days, people outside enjoying the beautiful landscapes and company.

Do you have any secret outdoor spots in Gloucester where you go to “get away”?
I spend a lot of time on the rocks in Magnolia since they’re a couple blocks from my house. There are so many days when there isn’t anything I would rather do than sit on the rocks by the ocean and relax.

What is your favorite pizza joint in Gloucester?

I LOVE calzones from Mike’s Place. Although I probably go to Supreme’s and grab a slice most often – it’s so affordable and right down the street from Art Haven.

What is your favorite sub shop in Gloucester?

Virgilio’s, without a doubt. Foot long tuna sub with lettuce, tomatoes, onions and pickles could never fail to make my day better.

What place would you go for a romantic dinner in Gloucester?
I haven’t done the romantic dinner thing in Gloucester too much, but I would say Latitude 43 or Alchemy. I love the atmosphere in both places and the food is always different and delicious.

What is your favorite bar in Gloucester?

I’m a quiet bar kind of person, so I actually really enjoy JD & Myers in Magnolia. I also went to Stone’s Pub for the first time the other night though and I’m a huge fan.

What is your favorite breakfast joint in Gloucester?
Sugar Mags! When I was going to Gordon College we would make regular trips and being close to it was one of the things I was most excited about when I first knew I’d be working on Main Street.

What is your favorite local event in Gloucester?  Well, gotta be buoy painting day at Art Haven! Oh wait, I guess I’m a little biased on that one. In all seriousness, I think block parties are one of the coolest things ever. Such a great idea and awesome community event. I’ve even invited my family from a couple hours away to come up for block party weekends to be a part of it.
In the summer do you prefer the beach or to be on a boat?  I prefer the beach for the most part. I love being on the sand.

Who is your favorite local artist? I would pick one of our students, but I can’t play favorites there and I guess some could argue that as a biased choice…haha. I think I’d have to go with Tom Torrey – If you haven’t seen his stuff, he’s a part of The Hive (thehivecapeann.com) and he makes the coolest creations out of recycled materials.

Which is your favorite local beach?  I can’t resist a trip to Good Harbor! I had some friends that lived in a house of Good Harbor my senior year at college, so it was the first beach in Gloucester I spent a lot of time at and I have some great memories there. I also still think its one of the greatest things that you can walk to the island from the beach!

Who has the best chowder in town? I don’t think I can answer this one – I’ve never been a huge chowder fan (sorry!!) so I haven’t tried very many…

Excluding GMG what is your second favorite local blog? Love The Hive Cape Ann’s blog – gets some different and fun information and local art out there.

Do you prefer haddock chowder or clam chowder?  I would have to pick clam chowder, but see two questions above…

What is your favorite Gloucester neighborhood? I love living in Magnolia, but I really love downtown. I love the energy and community of downtown Gloucester.

What is your favorite local band? Haven’t gotten into the local music scene as much as I’ve wanted to yet, but I did hear Pete Lindbergh on the blog the other day and I really liked it!

Carla Dellaporta Talks Bangs

Hi Joey,

You saw me at Passports Saturday morning with Donna and took note of my newly cropped bangs. Yes, wearing bangs is kickin’ it retro…but one needs to be careful about how the bangs are trimmed. It can go from cute retro cut to horrible 1980’s ‘do with a wrong snip too much in the wrong direction. (There are many days I’m not sure which category I belong in!)I’m no expert but, since that’s never stopped me from voicing my opinion before, I would venture a few tips: go with thicker bangs and go with bangs that are angled around the brow. Be sure to stay away from hairsprayed bangs and stay away from curly hair with straight bangs. I’ve attached a sample of "Good" bangs vs. "Bad" bangs to shed some light and see what your other GMG readers think.

Peace out! (retro)

Backyard Growers Now Accepting Applications

Cape Ann Farmers’
Market Launches New Backyard Growers Program
Applications now being
accepted to help residents grow their own vegetable gardens

Feb. 11, 2011 — The Cape Ann Farmers’
Market is now accepting applications for its 2011 Backyard Growers Program,
which helps Gloucester residents grow fresh vegetables and save money on their
grocery bills by growing gardens in their own backyards. The number of spots in
the program is limited and will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
The
BYG program provides raised beds, compost, garden installation, seedlings,
seeds, and garden training and mentoring to Gloucester residents who want to
create backyard vegetable gardens. The backyard gardens are intended to meet
some of the families’ food needs, improve environmental conditions in downtown
neighborhoods, and build neighborhood unity within diverse populations. The
program also offers growers the opportunity to sell their surplus produce at
the farmers’ market’s Backyard Growers Table.
The 2010 BYG pilot program worked with seven
families in the Beacon Street neighborhood and at the Riverdale Youth Community
Garden in Riverdale Park. All of the participants were amazed at the incredible
yields that came out of their backyard gardens, and reported that they were
saving money at the grocery store and eating more fresh vegetables as a result
of the program. The Riverdale youth learned how to manage their community farm,
sold their produce at the Backyard Growers Table, and provided produce for The Open Door Mobile Market at Riverdale
Park.
The
BYG program partners with The Food Project, Inc. (www.thefoodproject.org) to
access resources and expertise and to fulfill mutual goals. In 2010 the Cape
Ann Farmers’ Market received funding from the Bruce J. Anderson Foundation and
the Sparkplug Foundation to support the BYG program, and received product
donations from Goose Cove Gardens and Brick Ends Farm.
This year the program will spread out from the
Beacon Street neighborhood into a wider geographic area to work with 25 new
families. The BYG program will also partner with The Open
Door Garden Project (www.foodpantry.org)
to create gardens and work with families at their Emerson
Avenue facility.
The program will continue to work with the 2010 participants and will deepen
its relationship with the Riverdale Park Youth Garden by increasing the
frequency and duration of the hands-on farm training. In addition, the BYG
program will pilot a new mentoring program, building a volunteer force of
gardening mentors who will meet regularly with backyard growers to provide
consistent follow-up garden support. If you are interested in becoming a garden
mentor please contact the Backyard Growers Coordinator for details.
To Participate
· If you live within the
following areas you are eligible to apply for the 2011 program: south of the
train tracks, west of Washington St., north of Granite St./Blynman Ave., and
east of the high school/food pantry area. One of the goals of this program is
to create a neighborhood of growers who can support one another throughout the
growing season. Each year the program will expand to serve more Gloucester
neighborhoods.
· Preference is given to
low- to moderate-income residents, but anyone in the neighborhood is welcome to
apply.
· Applications are
accepted from people with all levels of garden experience – from beginners to
green thumbs.
· Applications are
accepted from people with no existing gardens and people who already have
garden beds, but who want to access the trainings, resources, and community
that are offered through the program.
· The application deadline
is Friday, March 11 for a limited number of spots.
To
learn more about the BYG program and to download a 2011 program application,
please go to www.capeannfarmersmarket.org/backyard-growers, or contact Lara
Lepionka, Backyard Growers Coordinator, at 978-283-1308 or
lara. The Cape Ann Farmers’ Market’s mission is to be a regular, healthy source of fresh
food for the people of Cape Ann at prices they can afford. The market also
supports a network of local food growers and producers and the local economy
that is fueled by their success. Check the website soon for upcoming details on
the 2011 farmers’ market or contact Nicole Bogin, Market Manager, at
978-290-2717 or capeannfarmersmarket.

Harold Burnham bears a family name that is virtually synonymous with Essex, the birthplace of approximately 4,000 schooners. Like his ancestors before him, Harold has a holistic approach to vessel design, construction and operation which makes him uniquely efficient.
