Cambridge Seven Associates (C7A) presented an emerging design developed from the initial community workshops and their evaluation of the existing conditions along the walk.  Followup to meeting.
Got a Moment?
Along the new harborwalk, granite posts will have simple etched glass or pressed metal markers that tell a story of Gloucester.  If you know a story – a special piece of life in Gloucester – share that for the harborwalk! Contributions will be accepted until April 15th.
Cultural Art Installations

When the design is further along and possibly under construction, we will be seeking eight cultural art installations.  We will rely on the arts community to coordinate this effort.  Look for details coming soon!

Gloucester awarded $500,000 State Grant

The City received a $500,000 grant from the Massachusetts Seaport Advisory Council to fund creation of a pedestrian pathway, that will extend public access through the heart of the working harbor to the historic and cultural sites along Harbor Loop.

The HarborWalk
The HarborWalk will provide improved access to recreational and cultural opportunities such as the Fitz Henry Lane House, Maritime Heritage Center, harbor businesses and restaurants, and provide greater public access to the water’s edge. The HarborWalk will provide educational opportunities for residents and visitors to learn about the harbor’s history and Gloucester’s unique maritime heritage as well as to see and understand contemporary maritime activities. The HarborWalk will be designed to stregthen connections among the working harbor, downtown attractions and Main Street businesses. Strong design, consistent use of materials, interpretive features and public art will help create a distinctive urban landmark for the city and provide an inviting experience for visitors, residents and employees of surrounding businesses.

The Rocky Neck Gallery is accepting proposals for two-week shows to be held this summer in the Rocky Neck Gallery from June 8 to October 12, 2011. The exhibit space is a 12′ x 6′ corner section of the gallery. Any artist, group of artists, or authorized representative of a deceased artist may apply in any medium. The Rocky Neck Gallery will provide publicity, signage, gallery sitting, help with hanging and receptions, and will handle sales. In return, the gallery will charge a fee to cover costs. Gloucester Stage Company Silent Auction

The Gloucester Stage Company is looking for visual artists that might want to donate a piece of artwork for a silent auction to take place during their 2011 Spring Benefit Gala in May. The benefit is a dinner/dance event to "kick off" the GSC’s 32nd Summer Play Season and will be held at Cruiseport Gloucester on Friday, May 20. It will be marketed on their 2011 Season Brochure, which will be mailed in early March to 5000+ constituents, as well as on posters, invitations and internet event listing sites.

Those artists who participate in the auction will receive recognition on the invitation, on the GSC website, and at the event. CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS 

Painting from the Heart – Cultivating Intuitive Vision
with Color, Imagery, Print & Collage: by Sigrid Olsen

June 13-17, 2011

This workshop will incorporate a number of techniques Sigrid has developed to allow free and spontaneous use of color and print in order to express one’s personal life vision. The goal is to open up to possibility and leave each participant inspired to leave all preconceptions behind and get on with the business of highly creative living. The mood will be equally upbeat and introspective, technically instructional while reaching deeper to unleash inner imagination and self-expression. We will use a three part media: painting, print and collage. There will be a focus on color mixing, color theory and self expression through color utilizing permanent brilliant watercolor inks on paper. In combination with the watercolor under-painting, there will be a print component, employing hand-carved rubber print blocks. The workshop culminates in a collage using all the elements practiced over the past few days. The notion of inspiration will be explored through guided meditation, audio-visual presentation and open discussion.

Call for Proposals

LynnArts is now accepting proposals for group and solo shows for 2012. The Willow Community Gallery, suitable for two to four person or solo shows and installations is 12′ x 25′ with 12′ ceilings (5 openings) with a standard size door entry. Accepted artists are required to install their show, produce show cards and provide an opening reception, though no fee is charged for the space. LynnArts sends out press releases on all shows, but strongly encourages artists to send their own promotion materials as well. Artists are also strongly encouraged to offer a community component to their exhibition like a gallery talk or demonstration.

We accept proposals for all mediums and installations, though film/video artists must supply their own equipment. The deadline for proposals is May 1. Chantey Night Has Been Moved To Tuesdays At Cape Ann Brewing

An update for your readers:  Chantey Night, an open Tuesday night sing featuring members of Three Sheets to the Wind, Knockabout, and other music groups from the North Shore and the Boston area, has moved from the now-closed Cameron’s to the Cape Ann Brewing Company.   The singing begins at 8:30 every Tuesday night.

For all the schooner heads this is quite a thing to see.  If you have someone coming into town and want to hear and see something very different it can be pretty cool. 

Be warned though- don’t go planning a meeting or meet-up where you think you’re going to be able to carry on a conversation while they are singing.  Best to plan it for a different night at Cape Ann Brewing.

Fontana Family St Joseph Novena 2011- Must Watch Videos

I think you will really enjoy watching the videos that I’ll be putting out each day this week from the first five houses along the route of the Novena Crawl.  From the walking up the staircase and listening to the warm greetings in the Fontana house all the way through the fifth house at the Orlandos you hear of special traditions spoken from the mouths of the women who have been celebrating for generations.  Again I wish I could have made it to all 11 houses but my little ones were up way past their bed time.  I’m sure Manny will be releasing some fantastic footage from the remaining houses as well.

We start off at the first house on Sefatia’s Novena Crawl through the City at The Fontana House.  Tomorrow look for The Scola Novena, followed by the Russo, Ferrrante and Orlando Houses. One a day til we are out of footage.  Thank you to all the families for welcoming us into your homes and sharing this wonderful tradition.

Often cited as the one of the most brilliant men of his time, Goethe excelled in literature, philosophy and science. Although best know for his seminal poem “Faust,” which tells the story of a man who sells his soul to the devil, Goethe made significant contributions to the theories of both evolution and the perception of color. Politically conservative in an age of revolution, he was a principal advisor to the Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar. Goethe’s affect on early Romanticism and Humanism is hard to overstate.

Docksiders Spaghetti Dinner and Concert

The Docksiders will hold a spaghetti dinner, concert, and silent auction on Friday, April 8 at 6:00 pm at the DES Club 133 Prospect Street in Gloucester. Dinner includes, rolls, salad, spaghetti with marinara or meat sauce, dessert and assorted beverages. Silent auction will be on going throughout dinner.

Tickets at the door. Adults $7.00, children 12 and under $5.00. Families with more than 2 children $25.00. All proceeds will go towards the Docksiders trip to Disneyland Paris in 2012. For more information, call 978-281-2140

Celebrating St Joseph 2011 Slide Show

Click on the picture for Joey’s slide show which brings us through the first 5 houses on  Sefatia’s list of 11 Gloucester St Joseph Novenas.  I wish I could have gone to all 11 houses but I wanted the girls to have a good memory of it and as the night wore on I didn’t want to push them too far past their normal 6:30PM bedtime.  Look for Manny’s slide show which will have many more of the houses and a ton of pictures of the people who attended the novenas. 

I’d like to extend a special thanks to the Fontana, Scola, Russo,Ferrante and Orlando families for opening their houses and continuing this beautiful tradition.  I’d also like to thank Sefatia for being a fantastic guide and teacher along the route.  She reminded me of many things I’d long forgotten about the traditions and  taught me a whole lot more.

Making Empenadas At Gloria’s Video

One of the things I love most about eating at Gloria’s is Gloria herself and the pride she takes in her cooking.

Whenever I ask her what tomorrow’s “Spanish Special” is going to be she gets this incredible smile and enthusiasm on her face when she describes what she will be making the next day.  I don’t even bother looking at the regular menu because the daily “Spanish specials” are always ridiculously good.

Much more to come.  Pictures and videos.  I only stayed through 5 houses as I needed to get the girls home but our boy Manny is with Sista felicia and hopefully all the houses will get captured.

All I can say is that it was beautiful and emotional with waves of old school tradition washing over the rooms as the women sang and embraced each other.

The videos should be spectacular and photos will be plenty.
