2011 Greasy Pole Updates

This year’s Greasy Pole Shrine at Felicia Oil down in the Fort is going to be better than ever (and it was already pretty huge to begin with).  Eric Spear asked for us to put a call out for help finding old photos to add to the Greasy Pole Shrine and connecting the dots is generally something we can do pretty good around here at GMG.

I put him in touch with Fred Buck at The Cape Ann Museum and they have been collaborating to bring a whole slew of new photos that haven’t been seen in a great number of years to the Shrine.  there is also another huge addition which I’ll announce once I get clearance.

Also this just in from Frankie Interrante-

Not sure if it newsworthy to your readers bout Bobby Scola and I will be walking the pole for the first time in over 20 years. Neither one of us has ever won but got a bunch of Saturday walks under our belts. I am walking Sunday in honor of my cousin Benny Interrante who took the flag in 1976, a few years before he went down to sea on the Captain Cosmo.  Bobby I think is walking for Sammo.

Be nice if you let the readers know about our traditions regarding this tradition.

Thanks Frankie Interrante.

Pete Chamberlain Paints What I Shoot

At the Khan Studio/GMG Gallery guest artist Pete Chamberlain hung this, one of his paintings which is eerily similar to a photo I took shown below September 30, 2010

Interesting how Pete interpreted the scene without ever having seen my photo.

Katherine McMillan Asks What Is The Story With The Pirate Looking Ships at Cruiseport?

Anyone have any info they want to share?

Don answers-

These ships are the NINA & PINTA, reproductions of the 15th century Caravelles that Columbus sailed across the Atlantic. They were built in Brazil using native tropical hardwoods and traditional tools of the period. They are owned by Morgan Sanger of the COLUMBUS FOUNDATION and are used for educational platforms. Tours begin today on Niña and Pinta replicas-

By Deborah Mcdermott

June 14, 2011 2:00 AM

KITTERY, Maine — It must have felt like stepping back in time Monday afternoon for anyone standing on the banks of the Piscataqua River, as two replicas of 15th-century ships came into view.

The Niña and Pinta, modeled after ships of the same name sailed by Christopher Columbus when he came to the New World in 1492, sailed into Badger’s Island Marina East on Monday for a weeklong stay.

Tour the Niña and Pinta replicas

When: 9 a.m.-6 p.m., Tuesday, June 14 to Monday, June 20

Where: Badger’s Island Marina East.

From Interstate 95, take the Kittery traffic circle exit, and take State Road or Route 1 south toward Memorial Bridge and Portsmouth. No parking is available at the marina site.

Admission: $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, $6 for children ages 5-16; free for children age 4 and under.

Parking:

Weekdays and Sunday, June 19:

First lot: Badger’s Island Marina West: With Memorial Bridge straight ahead, take a right next to Hebert Brothers; the ships will be on the left). Head to the parking lot at the end of the street where there is limited parking.

Second lot: If the first lot is filled, retrace your steps back down Route 1 north to the intersection of Route 1 and Walker Street, where there is an empty lot. Flaggers will direct you. Walk to the marina.

On Saturday June 18: First lot remains the same, although there is very limited parking there.

Second lot: The lot at the corner of Route 1 and Walker is being used that day for the Kittery Block Party and you will not be able to park there. Motorists are asked to please use the Island Marine Service lot on Route 236 heading toward South Berwick, just past the I-95 interchange on the right. A shuttle bus will bring visitors to the ships.

Capt. Kyle Friaut said the trip up from Connecticut, where they were last docked, was uneventful, with the crew stopping over in Gloucester, Mass., for a few days over the weekend.

Introducing: The Burnham’s Field Gardener Series From John McElhenny

Burnham’s Field is the largest green space in central Gloucester. A century ago, it was used as a dumping ground. Today it’s an area of green grass, play areas and ball fields where kids play and families socialize. Recently there’s been a resurgence of pride in Burnham’s Field, including a new 20-plot garden. The gardeners have gotten to know each other and built a small community in addition to a place to grow vegetables and flowers. In some ways, the Burnham’s Field Community Garden represents what’s best about Gloucester: a close-knit, hard-working community that cares for its neighbors.

Starting today, GoodMorningGloucester introduces a series of profiles of the Burnham’s Field Community Gardeners. Here are their stories.

Paula Shevenell describes her secret bug defense technique and how gardening revives fond memories of her dad and mom and the family gardens of her youth. “It really feels good to get my hands in the dirt,” she says.
