Cape Ann Cuisine From Ann Kennedy

Ann Writes-

Hi Joey.  In case you have a slow news day–unlikely, I realize.  Here are a week’s worth of reasons to get back to Cape Ann asap.  While Kansas City is a fabulous restaurant town, there are some things that must be eaten only on Cape Ann!  I know you’ll recognize the food from your terrific local eateries.

How many of the dishes can you recognize where they were served?

FOB Frank Ciolino brought down this old Visitor’s Guide map and I’ll be posting a different neighborhood photo each day this week.  Look for clues to tell you when you think it was first published.

International Dory Racing Committee News

As I’ve said in the past, the paltry amount of money it costs to join the International Dorys is the best value to get yourself on Gloucester Harbor all year long.  There is nothing like the oneness with the harbor that you feel once you pull away from the berth and all you hear is the woosh of your oars in the water. Hope your offseason workouts are going well!

It has been a great winter for rowing enthusiasts with the weather offering little cold, snow or ice to deal with.  The dates are set and the schedule is posted for the 2012 Season with our first boat maintenance date on March 31st.  We have also planned a 60th Anniversary dory fundraiser & Season kick-off party at the Legion on Saturday, May 12th, so save the date!

Dues letters will be going out soon, but you can save us a stamp by logging on to our websitewww.internationaldories.com, printing the membership application and sending it in.  While on the website, check out our virtual store link for dory apparel and our new facebook page that is also linked.  We are trying to organize a youth/novice program for the Spring for any new rowers that you know.  And, we are always looking for volunteers to help man our events and programs, so please let us know if you would be interested in helping out!

Closets Playing At The Gorton Theater!

Hi Joey-

Be sure not to miss Closets, a brand new comedy that is playing at The Gorton Theater this week and next. It’s a perfect commentary in our times, about selfish people, grabby, greedy types who finally get what they deserve. In fact the stage managers are complaining that the show is so funny they can’t help laughing, and it makes their job harder. And at every rehearsal, they keep finding new places to laugh!

This is the type of show that ought to end up on Broadway, and maybe will. So save a bundle, and see it here first. Also, the author will be in town this week, so you can get his perspective on the script and the CAST production of Closets when you come to see it..

Better leave the kids at home. This is truly an adult comedy. Closets plays from Thursday, March 8 through Sunday, March 18. Check the CAST blog for details.

Thanks for spreading the word.

Pet Peeve # 21

Right around number 21 of my biggest pet peeves is when you order a bagel to go and order it with butter or cream cheese and the jointg doeswnt spread it on for you.

Is it really that hard to have the tub of butter or cream cheese and smear it on for me in two swoops rather than make me open an individual package in the car and fumble around with a flimsy knife and get the crumbs all over the car.

You take a process that should take the server all of 3 seconds and turn it into a minute long awkward process.

Perhaps it doesn’t annoy others but it’s one of mine.

What are some little things that bug the hell out of you.
(and I’ll preemptively write out Paulie Walnuts pet peeve-
I hate it when Joey whines about little annoyances)

Memories Of The Oceanside Hotel, Magnolia MA In 1931 From George Krewson III

My Dad purchased the Oceanside Hotel at Magnolia in 1931. I was 6 at the time. He kept it until 1946. Dad had no idea how to operate a hotel, having most previous experience in the building business. When the 1929 depression hit he was out of building and just happened to acquire the Oceanside by what he called “trading cats for dogs.” He and Mom learned quickly, and within a few years a guest suggested that they journey down to Thomasville, GA and have a look a winter resort inn there. They liked what they saw and purchased the inn. Each year for the next 11 years they thrived on the resort hotel business–the Oceanside at Magnolia in the summer, and the Three Toms Inn at Thomasville in the winter, Needless to say I cam to really love growing up in the business. Then came WW II and changes in all family’s lives.

Magnolia and the Oceanside, in particular, will always remain as a fond memory.

At Transform Fitness Studio in Essex Ma, 30 of us rode a three hour marathon spin along with many other clubs in New England. We raised $4000 and all together $265,000 was raised to find a cure and create more birthdays.
