Ocean Alliance – Gulf of Mexico report from Iain Kerr

Hi Joey,
Its been too long since we have spoken.
We have been pretty busy at this end – moving business and home from Acton to Gloucester.  Good news to report is that we are now Gloucester residents.
I know that a lot of people follow the work we are doing at the Paint Factory but I am not sure how many people follow my real job – ocean research.
The Research vessel Odyssey is now on her 23rd day at sea for our 3rd summer expedition in the Gulf of Mexico looking at the effects of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster on wildlife.
Every day the crew post logs on our website about the days happenings, these are more personal logs as against scientific but I think that they are good windows into life aboard a research vessel, the html is:   http://www.oceanalliance.org/category/home-page-blogs/
I have attached a photo of the Odyssey working in over 5,000 ft of water – with an oil rig right behind her.
I have also copied a bit more information about our work in the Gulf below if you think that it might be of interest to your readers.
Gulf of Mexico Odyssey Expedition Goals
·      Observe any chronic effects of the oil crisis on whales and the ecosystem
·      Collect biological samples from whales to determine a baseline of exposure to petroleum products, chemical dispersants and metals
·      Develop cell lines to determine impact of oil, chemical dispersants, mixed dispersant and oil, and metals on whale DNA
·      Collect samples from food chain, air and water to determine routes of exposure
·      Put Gulf sperm whales in global toxicological context with previous Odyssey Expedition data
Year 1 & 2 Gulf of Mexico Research Expedition Highlights

·      Ocean Alliance (OA) in partnership with the Wise Laboratory conducted two summer research expeditions in the Gulf of Mexico from aboard the Odyssey, our 93-foot, steel-hull ketch, equipped with a state of the art cell-culture laboratory.
·      More than 340 educational and scientific blogs posted on line by educators, scientists and crew from the ‘High Seas’
·      Over the 2010 & 2011 expedition, 132 whale biopsies from Humpback, fin, sperm, and Bryde’s whales were collected
·      130+ DNA, skin, and blubber samples were obtained from the whales
·      55 whale cell lines, grown from 3 whale species in year 2 – taking the total # of whale cell lines developed in 2 years to 88
·      We also collected 270 fish samples, 154 invertebrate samples, 14 dolphin blows, 200+ hours of acoustic recordings, 235 liters of seawater (from 2 depths) at 35 sites and 6.3 kilograms of sediment from 10 sites (one from 3,000 ft)
·      Established the first known culture of Bryde’s whale cells

·      Success in establishing critical baseline pollutant exposure data set for whales in the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic

Outcomes
·      Scientific breakthroughs
§  First-ever mammalian cell culture laboratory on a sailboat—and possibly first at sea – 2 years in a row
§  Became first laboratory to culture whale cells at sea (88 cell lines developed from 3 species during 2010 & 2011 field season)
§  Became first laboratory to culture Bryde’s whale cells
·      Chronic toxicological exposure and impact evaluation initiated
§  Baseline exposure data samples collected
§  Baseline DNA damage assessment underway
§  Chemical dispersant, oil & metal toxicity testing begun
·      Ocean Alliance/USM marine toxicological research program established in field
§  Presence established as unique research program in Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic
§  Gulf of Mexico established as long-term ongoing toxicological research site
§  The Odyssey optimized as unique deepwater marine research platform for engaged student learning opportunities
All the best
Iain

all lama marut all the time!

woodman’s:
lama marut will be at woodman’s function hall next wednesday, june 20. his presentation is entitled, The Buddha was Not a Buddhist. very compelling topic dealing with how the message of a visionary, whether it be buddha, christ or someone else, becomes institutionalized (not in the sanitarium way) and how people hold on to it as the only truth as they start to separate themselves from those who don’t believe in the same things they do. you can see how this might lead to problems. lama marut’s talk will show how we can ditch the dogma and get down to the beautiful core of a spiritual practice. he loves this stuff and will most likely be on fire! you should try to come to this one, i think you’d like it! you might also find this interesting: lama marut’s inspiration and lineage

Mile Marker One Restaurant and Bar in Gloucester MA

Tobin Dominick writes-

He Joey,

Hope this email finds you well.

Super exciting Mile Marker One is going to be opening for lunch and dinner next week, and then about a week later we will be open for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner!!!!

We have our tented deck like we had last year, but we have a few more additions as well. A brand new inside, directly on the water’s edge, year round dining room. Also we have more deck waterside seating off of the indoor pool on the Pool Deck with fantastic front row seats to Annisquam River and Boat ramp activities.

Our menus are in action, fresh seafood, burgers, salads, sandwiches, entrees and appetizers in case you want to “EAT, DRINK, and CHILL”.  We can’t wait to get the word out.

Two of my biggest questions so far are – is Mile Marker One where the Gull use to be? NO if you enter into the Hotel Lobby area a hostess will greet you and show you the dining areas. Second question – Can we come to Mile Marker One by boat – YES! We are encourage you to come by boat, and if you do it is free dockage with a Mile Marker One receipt. Boats need to contact us on Channel VHF 10 and the dock staff can assist in a location for tie up.

2012 Run Gloucester! Cancelled

DMSE Sports Press release-

Cancellation Notice

We regret to announce that due to a number of reasons, primarily lack of major sponsorship for the second year in a row and overall limited interest, DMSE Sports and the Gloucester Fishermen Athletic Association have collectively decided it is not wise to continue with the Run Gloucester! race for 2012.
We are very disappointed to have to announce this, but it simply isn’t prudent to continue with the event this year if we can’t guarantee a successful race. For those few who have already registered for the race, we will be refunding 100% of your entry fee along with the processing fee within the next few days. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience.

In 30 years of producing races, this is the first time DMSE has had to cancel a race in this manner. We tried our best to make it work again this year but now feel it is in everyone’s best interest to cancel at this time and re-think the entire concept. We hope to see you at many of the other DMSE Sports races this year.

Oceanside Sea Dog From George Krewson III

Hi Joey,

The attached pictures show the boat called the Sea Dog which my Dad, George Krewson Jr., purchased from a lady up in Canada who had won it by buying a charitable lottery ticket in Gloucester, back in the 1930’s.  He offered her $700 and she accepted.  Herman Melanson, maintenance man at the Oceanside, took one winter to remodel it, after getting it up behind the Oceanside.  The bottom picture shows the great job he did on the forty footer.  Dad was the captain and got great enjoyment from taking out Oceanside guests from Magnolia Harbor to the surrounding ocean views.  He retained it for a few years after selling the Oceanside.

Only $12,000,000 To Go

DSC06796

www.oceanalliance.org

Ocean Alliance, based on figures provided by the lead architect, has a goal of raising approximately $12 million to restore the ~ 20,000 Sq.ft buildings in a way that mediates existing contamination, maintains their historic exterior appearance while modeling the interior as a practical, accessible research, education and historic center.

Only $12,000,000?  Hopefully the architect throws in a blowjob to sweeten the deal.

2012 Invention Awards: A Better Lobster Trap The Bait Savour

Do I know if it works?  Hell no, but I thought our readers would be entertained-

Forwarded by Eian Woodman-

2012 Invention Awards: A Better Lobster Trap

Invention Awards 2012

The Bait Savour adds the critical time dimension to crustacean catching

Bait Savour Riley Smith

During a regular fishing season, most lobstermen can afford to check and rebait their traps only every three or four days. Each run to the traps can cost as much as $600 for fuel and take 18 hours of work. But three or four days can be more than enough time for lobsters to eat the chunks of herring or mackerel that serve as bait. With no bait left, lobsters don’t enter the trap and fishermen are left with a smaller catch. Thus, the millions of traps that dot the Atlantic from Newfoundland to North Carolina remain empty about half the time.

Vince Stuart, the owner of a Nova Scotia company that makes winches, gantries and other fishing-boat rigging, first heard about the lobstermen’s problem from his clients on the docks in 2003. He soon began building the Bait Savour, a device that would release an extra supply of lobster bait a few days after a trap was laid. It allows the lobstermen to check their traps less frequently (about once every five days instead of every three or four), saving time, labor and fuel.
