Bound For Gloucester. Can You Name The Location?

WHERE?

Joey  …. Schooners will be arriving for the Festival in less than two weeks.  For some it will be a trek, but getting here can be half the fun.  Sometimes.  Depending on the breeze.

GREEN DRAGON is a ‘local’ boat but we are not always local.   Here we were bound for the Festival.  WHERE is this?

For those who don’t know, the 24 sayings that were carved into boulders in Dogtown during the Great Depression were Babson’s philosophy of what needed to be done to get out of the depression. With sayings such as Get a Job, Use Your Head, Never Try, Never Win, the sayings are both inspirational and sarcastic. The "Highlander Sea" an historic Essex built schooner now at the Gloucester Marine Railways from Len Burgess

Get ye over to the Gloucester Railways and see this Starling Burgess beautifully designed gaff-rigged topsail schooner that was built in 1924 in Essex, Massachusetts by J.F. James and Sons. She was designed in the typical Grand Banks tradition with a spoon bow, round bilge and full keel. Originally christened PILOT, she served 47 years as a Boston pilot ship. For a period of that time she served along side the pilot ship ROSEWAY.

In the 1970’s she was purchased to circumnavigate the globe. She got as far as Fiji and in 1976 was sold. Her next owner renamed her STAR PILOT and obtained a US Coast Guard certification to serve as a school ship. She passed ownership again in 1998. Then soon after sailed from San Diego, California, to Nova Scotia. In Nova Scotia she had a major refit and was used as a training ship for young seafarers. At that time her name was changed to HIGHLANDER SEA. In 2002 the vessel was purchased by her current owners. In 2004 she had a major refit. The HIGHLANDER SEA now serves as the community tall ship for Port Huron, Michigan.

Length 121’9"; Beam 25′;  Draft 13’10";  Rig height: 131 feet; Sparred length: 154 feet; Sail area: 9,728 sq feet; Power: Twin Detroit diesel 8V-92, 350 HP each; Built in Essex, MA in 1924; Major refit in 2004; Builder J.F. James & Son; Now for sale at $2,000,000.

28th Annual Gloucester Schooner Festival ready to set sail

image

The Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce and the Schooner Festival Committee are proud to announce that the 28th Annual Gloucester Schooner Festival will take place Labor Day Weekend in Gloucester Harbor from August 31 to September 2.

Among the highlights for the weekend is the Parade of Lights and fireworks on Saturday, September 1, followed by the Parade of Sail and Mayor’s Race for the Esperanto Cup on Sunday, September 2.

Participating schooners include The Adventure, Adventurer, American Eagle, Ardelle, Bald Eagle, Brilliant, Estrela, Fame, Green Dragon, Irena, Lewis H. Story, Liberty Clipper, Roseway, Spirit of Massachusetts, Sugar Babe, Summer Wind, Thomas E. Lannon, Tyrone and more to come! Select schooners will be open for tours throughout the weekend.

In addition to the many beautiful medium and large schooners that will grace the waters of Cape Ann, will be a visit from the HMS Bounty from East Setauket, New York. The 180-foot long replica vessel was a floating movie set for the 1962 film Mutiny on the Bounty and also appeared in the Johnny Depp film, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.

Throughout the weekend, raffle tickets will be on sale to benefit the 2012 Gloucester Schooner Festival and the 2012 Summer Sailing Scholarships that fund the Gloucester High School Sailing Team and Gloucester’s Project Adventure.

For more information on the entire weekend go to www.capeannvacations.com/schooner or contact Tim Burton at tim@capeannchamber.com or call 978-283-1601.

The HMS Bounty will be visiting Gloucester, Massachusetts as part of our East Coast Tour and the Gloucester Schooner Festival. The ship will be open for dockside tours.

The HMS Bounty is one of the most famous ships in the world.  Known for the storied mutiny that took place in Tahiti in 1789 on board the British transport vessel, the current Bounty, a replica, has survived to tell the tale.  Built for the 1962 movie “Mutiny on the Bounty” with Marlon Brando, HMS Bounty sails the country offering dockside tours in which one can learn about the history and details of such sailing vessels from a lost and romanticized time in maritime history.  Since her debut in “Mutiny on the Bounty”, HMS Bounty has appeared in many feature films and documentaries such as the Edinburgh Trader in Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Mans Chest with Johnny Depp.

The ship will arrive on the Friday August 31st and stay through Monday evening September 3rd 2012.  During her stay she will be open for tours on Saturday, Sunday and Monday September 1st, 2nd and 3rd from 10am – 5pm.  Tour prices will be $10 per adult, and $5 per child with children under 5 free.    All tour proceeds go to the continued support of the ship.

For more information on the HMS Bounty visiting Gloucester,

please call (631) 584-7900.

Gloucester Harbor Schooner Race From Len Burgess

Last Monday evening was the first race between two schooners built by Master Shipwright, Harold Burnham, the Thomas E. Lannon Captained by Tom Ellis and the schooner Ardelle captained by Harold Burnham.

It proved to be great fun for all. Besides the schooner race itself, there was a lively contest between the ships guest crews for the best chanty song, knot tying, photography and a lifesaving test.

Here’s a few shots… and there is a slide show at…

Schooner Brilliant ~ Decks Awash From Fred Bodin

image

The Brilliant was built in 1932, and is 61.5 feet long. She was designed for speed, and set the record for a Trans-Atlantic crossing for a vessel of her size at the time. This is an ocean-going, sail powered speedboat if ever there was one. As you can see, there was good wind during this Gloucester Schooner Race, where one competing schooner blew out her topsail, and there were a few green-looking photographers on the Committee/Press boat. Schooner Brilliant will compete in the Gloucester Schooner Races this year.

As with all historic schooners, paying passengers are essential to support the cost of Schooner Brilliant, sailing from her home port of Mystic (CT) to Gloucester, during the race itself, and the trip back to Mystic. Any leg of this voyage would certainly be an experience of a lifetime! I urge you to support Brilliant the other schooners during our annual Gloucester Schooner Races: Mystic Seaport: The Museum of America and the Sea™ : Sail Overnight on Schooner Brilliant For more information and to book passage call: 860-572-5331

Striped bass tournament to benefit Open Door Pantry

Tourney in memory of Danvers official has raised over $44,000 in the last nine years; marks its tenth anniversary Labor Day weekend

Tickets are now on sale at Winchester Fishing in Gloucester and Fin and Feather in Essex for a striped bass fishing tournament to benefit the Open Door Pantry in Gloucester.

The Leo Almeida Memorial North Shore Striped Bass Tournament is celebrating its tenth year this Labor Day weekend. It is the only tournament that combines the North Shore’s fishing heritage with the fight against hunger on Cape Ann and in other local communities.

The tournament will be held Labor Day weekend, Sept. 1-3. Prizes up to $500 will be awarded in various categories, including boat, shore/surf and for youth 15 and under.  A raffle of dozens of prizes will also be held. Those who wish to donate to the pantries can enter and will also be eligible to win raffle prizes.

Entry fee is $15. Tickets are available at Winchester Fishing in Gloucester and at Fin and Feather in Essex. Ticket sales end Friday, Aug. 31.

The Open Door Pantry on Emerson Avenue has been feeding local residents for over 25 years. The tournament will also benefit the People to People Food Pantry in Danvers, Our Neighbor’s Table in Amesbury and Essex County Hunger Relief.

Leo Almeida was a lifelong North Shore resident whose commitment to public service was matched by his love of fishing. He died in 2003 shortly before the first North Shore Striped Bass Tournament that he organized. Now family and friends carry on the tournament in his name each year.  In the past nine years, the tournament has raised over $44,000 for anti-hunger organizations in Essex County. Over 900 people have participated since the tournament began.

To enter or for more information, see http://www.northshorestriper.com or call Tournament Chairwoman Amy Almeida at (617) 501-1659

Carol St.John, artist, author and workshop leader, formerly of Gloucester, will be delivering a talk at the Unitarian-Universalist Society in Rockport next Sunday, August 19th at 10:30AM. She will describe events that demanded her involvement and turned her into an activist for human rights. St.John offers an insider’s view to a situation that is being filmed, exposed and critiqued around the world.

The public is encouraged to participate in the procession and ceremony. Please bring loose flowers to be scattered into the harbor. Wreaths will be placed at the Fishermen’s Monument. Splash into Cape Ann Museum’s CAMafterhours

Enjoy a Night of Art, Dancing, Music, Fun, Food, Spirits & More

The Cape Ann Museum is pleased to announce this summer’s CAMafterhours, inspired by water, water, the multimedia installation by Gloucester artists Sarah Hollis Perry and Rachel Perry Welty. Come join us for a night of art, dance, music, fun, food & spirits on August 16, 2012 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Museum. Free for Museum members; $10 for non-members. Cash bar. RSVP to Courtney Richardson at courtneyrichardson@capeannmuseum.org or 978-283-0455 x12.

Playing off the themes of water, water, dancer Sarah Slifer and musicians Brian King (of What Time is it, Mr. Fox?) and Kristen Miller go Victorian in a performance piece which explores social taboos, inspired by works in the Museum’s collection. Selected songs use water as a metaphor for the unknown. In between these short pieces, DJ mixes provided by Mystery Train Records will fill the Museum galleries. These culled water-themed tunes come directly from the racks of this popular downtown Gloucester vintage record store.

After enjoying the great performances and music, dive beyond the water, water installation and follow the CAM scavenger hunt into the other galleries. Prizes will be awarded! Stirring things up, Alchemy Bistro’s general manager, Matt Rose, and Clayton Belanger, principle bartender, will give mixology demonstrations featuring Ryan & Wood Distilleries’ Beauport Vodka.  A cash bar will also be available and hors d’oeuvres will be generously provided by Alchemy Bistro and Latitude 43.

Always popular, CAMafterhours is an event you don’t want to miss, so reserve your spot early.

The Cape Ann Museum is located at 27 Pleasant Street in Gloucester. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Museum is closed during the month of February, on Mondays, and on major holidays. Admission is $8.00 adults, $6.00 Cape Ann residents, students, and seniors. Children under 12 and Museum members are free. The Museum is wheelchair accessible. For more information please call: (978) 283-0455. Additional information can be found online at www.capeannmuseum.org.

Bolognese Sauce

By Times StaffGloucester Daily Times

There are many variations for what is known as Bolognese sauce, and every Italian American home usually has its own.

Felicia Ciaramitaro Mohan’s version is typical. In her home, as in most other Italian American homes that take their Italian food seriously, it is a staple sauce, especially for the traditional Sunday dinners.

Felicia says that the best way to think of this sauce is as “a meat sauce, it is thick and not juicy.” There are two types of meat — ground hamburger and ground veal — but relatively little tomato sauce.

“I use it as the stuffing along with some peas for my arancini,” she says. “It is almost always served on pasta for Sunday dinner as well.”

HMS Bounty To Offer Dockside Tours During Schooner Festival

Tracie Simonin writes-

While in Gloucester we will be opening to the public for dockside tours of
the ship during the Gloucester Schooner Festival.  The cost will be $10
per adult, $5 per child and seniors and children under 5 are free.  We
pride ourselves on bringing the ship to new places and sharing the story
of the Mutiny on the Bounty and what it is like to sail a traditional
square rigged vessel from the 1780’s.  Although we are not a schooner, we
were anxious to be a part of the schooner festival that weekend and share
the Bounty with the town of Gloucester!

We would love it if you could share this info on your blog site.  In the
meantime, feel free to link to our website where we too have a wonderful
blog that could get people excited about reading first hand from a crew
member her experiences with sailing with the ship this summer.  Our link

Good morning, Joey:

As a longtime reader and friend of the blog, I know you are heavily into community service.

Each year, the members of Sandy Bay Engine Company 1 of the Rockport Fire Department raise money for a scholarship to honor the memory of one of our former officers, the late Fire Lieutenant Sheldon Knowles.  Sheldon passed on many years ago, way too young, from the ravages of cancer but is still remembered by our department as a firefighter/EMT who served the town with a pride and a commitment to which we all aspire.

This year, the Engine Company is once again sponsoring a harbor cruise fundraiser on Cape Ann Whale Watch’s Hurricane II.  I was hoping you could post the attached flyer on the blog to assist us with this.

Thanks very much for your help and for doing such a great job in promoting what’s truly the experience of living on Cape Ann .
