When did fishermen switch from baited lines to trawling nets?

Good reminder today about what a great source of information we have in the Sawyer Free Library. The History Channel had a question for a fishing-related TV show they’re working on so they contacted Gloucester. They wanted to know, When did fishermen switch from baited lines to trawling nets?
So we turned to the Sawyer Free Library and their excellent staff came through as usual. Reference Librarian Judith Oski put on her detective hat and here’s what she found:
According to the "Fishermen’s Own Book" by the Procter Brothers (1882), "The first trawl [in Gloucester] was made and set across Brace’s Cove in 1820, by Mr. John Rowe, still living at East Gloucester at the age of 75 years."
According to "The Fisheries and Fishery Industries of the United States," by G. Brown Goode (1884-87), "About 1851 or 1852 an old Irishman down at Swampscott bought an old dory and went to work rigging a trawl as he had been accustomed to do in the old country."
According to "The Port of Gloucester" by James B. Connolly (1940), "For more than two centuries Gloucestermen did all their fishing from the deck of the vessel and by means of single lines. It wasn’t until the third quarter of the last century [i.e. between 1875 and 1899] that Gloucestermen began to take notice of the trawling methods of the Frenchmen on the Grand Banks."

The vigil will be an evening of healing and to remember those lost to overdose and to help shed light on this on-

Maritime Saturday 9am to 2pm with the Phyllis A Marine Association at Gloucester Marine Railways, Rocky Neck
I know there are a ton of great things going on this weekend and wanted to add one more. The Phyllis A Marine Association will be having a Maritime Saturday over at the Gloucester Marine Railways, Rocky Neck from 9am to 2pm. Would be a great chance for people to learn more about this historic boat and the effort that is being made to get her back out on the waves. You also can get a chance to hear about her from the last Captain, Richard Arnold, who has some great stories about her and who’s father commissioned the boat to be built back in 1925 . Throw in a great view from the docks of the harbor with all of the Schooners around and Gloria’s awesome seafood chowder and it would make for a great visit! All this and I haven’t even gotten to the fact the Schooner Adventure will be docked out with us as well!

Born into the Cherokee Nation in what was then called Indian Territory, now Oklahoma, Rogers was a cowboy with a penchant for travel, working in Argentina, Australia and South Africa before turning to a career in vaudeville as a trick roper. It was his social commentary while roping that made him the best known star of his time. He appeared in scores of movies, wrote thousands of newspaper columns, and became a friend of the famous of the day. Although a patriot and supporter of the democratic process, it was that process and the foibles of politicians that gave him his best material: “A fool and his money are soon elected.” An early proponent of air travel, Rogers and aviator Wiley Post were killed in a plane crash in Alaska.
With this post the Quote of the Week celebrates two years with Good Morning Gloucester, one hundred entries. Just so you know, I write the bios based on my research to give the quote context, and one can click on the name or the picture that Joey adds to be connected to a Wikipedia entry for that particular author. Sometimes the adages are only attributed when I can’t find evidence of the direct quote; famous quipsters like Abraham Lincoln and Yogi Berra are often credited with things others actually said first.
I am always encouraged by your comments, and your suggestions are welcome too.
Many thanks to Joey and the GMG team for creating a forum where these lines can be shared. I find it astonishing how much wisdom there is in the world, and how the thoughts of famous men and women can apply to my own life. I hope you do too.
Saturday August 25th 2012 at 10 AM, teams representing the US lined up against competition from Nova Scotia , Canada to determine the finest dory rowers in the world. The weather was perfect with bright sunshine and a light breeze. The docks of Lunenburg were filled with dory enthusiasts from around the Maritimes and a contingent from the US . Picturesque Lunenburg Harbor was the perfect backdrop to set the scene for some athletic competition on the water.
Although there was no US team for the Junior Division, Senator Bruce Tarr teamed up with Canadian Dory Association President Kelly George to row an exhibition race against Canadian Juniors Nathanial Beck & Jorgan Martin. The Canadian juniors won, but Bruce held his own handling the oars like a veteran with the help of a little coaching from Kelly. The next race on the half mile course was the Mixed Doubles Division, where the flamboyant pair of Elin di Angelo & Mike “Gappa” Frontiera lined up against veteran rowers Tim Mair & Dorothy MacDonald. Elin & Mike displayed a perfect combination of raw power and technique quickly pulling ahead of the Canadians. The lead steadily increased with the help of perfect course navigation by Mike, ending with a decisive win for the US ! The Women’s Division presented a rematch from June with Denise Desautels & Edie Wald-Smith from the US taking on Gail Atkinson & Pattianne Verburgh of Canada . Gail & Pattianne won the race, but Denise & Edie significantly improved their technique and course navigation while swapping bow and stern seats a few weeks before the race. The Over 40 Division offered another rematch, but from last August where Mike Harmon & John Scola took on legendary Walter Nickerson & his long-time partner Danny Moody. Mike & John rowed them line-to-line loosing only a couple of strokes at the turn, but unfortunately that made the difference in the race. Walter & Danny enjoyed another victory in their storied career. The last race of the day was on the mile course, where Joe Sanfilippo & Erik Dombrowski took on June Over 40 Canadian Representatives Joel George & David Croft Jr. Joe & Erik overpowered and outlasted their hard-trying opponents and cruised to a sizeable victory. A special thanks goes to our American Rowers who traveled the grueling 13 hour drive to compete, as well as our Committee Race Officials who helped out at the races: Rick Medico (chase boat), Ron Woodard (timer), and Hilary Dombrowski (start boat).
The hospitality shown to the IDRC members by the Canadian Dory Association was extraordinary once again this year. The festivities started off at the Fire House with a Welcoming Reception where David Croft Jr.’s band was the entertainment. The CDA hosted a sailing cruise on Friday exploring the sights around Lunenburg Harbor . And, of course we were welcomed to an Awards Banquet at the Oven’s park after the races where scallops, chowder and celebratory drinks were abundant. There was a lot of talk about enduring friendships and camaraderie built on dory rowing competition, and it was personified in this 60th year.

Here’s the thing about the guys that did this video. They obviously had an agenda that they wanted to associate anything they could with Global warming.
Maybe Geno really felt this way but I’m not sure how you can extrapolate one year where we have an abnormally mild winter and spring with a trend. Because how would you explain winter before last when there was so much cold and snow we were running out of places to put it. We don’t talk about the extreme colds I guess because that wouldn’t fit in with their piece.

Hi Joey,
We were catching jelly fish Sunday and found this little creature swimming near the surface of the water. It’s some sort of crab larvae, and the strangest thing about it was the way it swam. It used its tail like a lobster does, but it swam pretty quickly in a forward direction – lobster use their tail to swim backward. Another behavior we noted was that it would roll itself into a ball and sink when it perceived a threat – it looked and felt just like a little pebble.
B studied this creature for most of the day, and encouraged me to share it. The finger in the photo is B’s and it’s only about 3/8” wide.
